1 Executive Summary
At the beginning of the project, D5.1 [1] and D5.2 [2] were produced in order to introduce
the full set of four WP5 working fields (exploitation, standardization, external liaisons, and
dissemination). Deliverable D5.4 reports the SmartenIT project's achievements during its
3-year lifetime done within the scope of external liaisons, standardization and dissemination. This deliverable, considered jointly with D5.3 [3], reporting both industrial and
academic partners exploitation measures, they give final and concise vision of different
kinds of already published and exploited results.
This document thoroughly overviews:
All considered dissemination categories with detailed information about achievements, The project has used different types of dissemination channels: starting from
typical papers submitted to conferences (with presentations) and journals, with book
chapter and books, to online reporting done by dedicated SmartenIT web page. The
project compiled also white papers in order to share general visions of assumptions
and solutions for chosen, specified and implemented TM solutions.
Reported achievements of different kinds allow to draw the conclusions that SmartenIT
project was very successful in disseminating results via different channels and also in
setting up strong and long lasting external liaisons allowing mutual exchange of
knowledge, software and many other assets with external consortia.

The document that is now developed within ITU-Ts Q16/13 addresses Environmental and
socio-economic sustainability in future networks and early realization of FN.
The version of Y.FNsocioeconomic that was contributed by UZH to the meeting, saw
increased comprehensibility achieved by condensing of text. The proposed changes,
which also included definitions and references, were well received by the meeting
participants. In the course of the meeting, key parts of the document, such as title and
scope, were improved. Due to these valuable changes, which were applied before and
during the meeting, the document is expected to reach consensus mid of next year.
The next editorial iteration for Y.FNsocioecomic will happen during the SG13 Rapporteur
meeting in February 2013. The UZH delegation will provide contributions to this iteration
that are to be developed in the framework of SmartenITs socio-economic research facet
and evaluate potential to channel technical SmartenIT research to ITU-T
recommendations as well.
MAR: ITU-T Rapporteur Meeting, February 2014
The ITU-T SG13 rapporteur meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, was attended by two
SmartenIT members to contribute to the development of ITU recommendation
Y.FNsocioeconomic, which is aimed at Socio-economic Assessment of Future Networks
by Tussle Analysis and developed within ITU-Ts Q16/13. The documents development
was initiated within ITU-Ts Q21/13 in 2011 by the SESERV project to raise the awareness
for socio-economic factors in the Future Internet landscape and to standardize tussle
analysis as a tool to deal with these factors.
SmartenITs contribution to the meeting finalized document changes that were requested
in the Study Group 13 meeting held in November 2013 in Kampala, Uganda, and enriched
the document by text from SmartenITs contribution to ITU-Ts RevCom meeting held in
January, 2014. Since the document is already very mature the changes were mostly of
editorial nature. During the meeting, terminology was again improved just as text further
condensed. Due to the overall agreement of meeting participants the document will be
announced for consensus in June 2014. UZH will therefore participate in this meeting to
support the last steps of the documents development and agreement.
The outlined activities happen in the framework of SmartenITs socio-economic research
facet where it is also evaluated whether technical SmartenIT research can be channeled to
ITU-T recommendations. The development of the document is highly relevant for
SmartenIT, as the project puts emphasis on socio-economic aspects of network
technology in order to enable the development of traffic management mechanisms that are
not only of high technical quality but also withstand inevitable socio-economic interactions
of stakeholders. Since Y.FNsocioeconomic is the first document within ITU-T that
addresses socio-economic aspects of network technology, SmartenITs activity in the
development of this document establishes contact with other experts in this area and
allows for the exchange of ideas on this topic. This allows for highly elaborated
discussions of socio-economic aspects of traffic management within the project.
Furthermore, the document itself, although not released yet, does already serve as a
valuable guideline for SmartenITs socio-economic discussions. Vice-versa, also ITU-T
profits from this document as the need for consideration of socio-economic aspects is
recognized within the organization but a suitable tool to address these in the
standardization process is missing. This gap became visible in the discussions on
SmartenITs contribution to ITU-Ts RevCom meeting, where SmartenIT proposed to
integrate tussle analysis into ITU-Ts standardization process; a proposal that was well
received but postponed due to organizational considerations.

purposes. The contribution was received with great interest as also ITU-T recognizes the
need to account for socio-economic considerations in technology development beyond the
traditionally/technical engineering goals (effectiveness, efficiency, modularity, and
security). Since the meeting revealed great interest in tussle analysis within ITU-T and
brought it to the attention to members of all Study Groups, the contribution to this RevCom
meeting not only identified an application area for tussle analysis, which will allow to
further refine it, but it will also greatly aid the development of Y.FNsocioeconomic in
reaching consensus.
The next editorial iteration for Y.FNsocioecomic will happen during the SG13 Rapporteur
meeting in February 2013. The UZH delegation will provide contributions to this iteration
that are to be developed in the framework of SmartenITs socio-economic research facet
and evaluate potential to channel technical SmartenIT research to ITU-T recommendations as well.
MAR: ASUT CS4 Meeting, September 2014
The Swiss Telecommunication Association (ASUT) invited UZH to their CS4-Meeting to
present the UZH activity within ITU-T, especially to present the approved recommendation
Y.3013 - Socio-economic Assessment of Future Networks by Tussle Analysis. The
meeting took place in Bern, Switzerland and representatives of Swisscom, ASUT, ETSI,
ITU-T, and BAKOM were present.
The invitation of UZH to this meeting was indicated by Leo Lehmann (Vice-Chair Working
Group 3, ITU-T, and representative of BAKOM). He was invited to present his involvement
in the standardization body ITU-T. Due to the fact that Leo Lehmann supported UZH in
recommendation activity throughout the last four years resulting in the first Swiss
academic recommendation Y.3013 he asked UZH to present the recommendation at the
CS4-Meeting. The presentation included ITU-T activity by UZH itself from starting point in
2011 until today with special focus on recommendation Y.3013 development and details
about the content Tussle Analysis.
The meeting participants were very interesting in Tussle Analysis itself and forced to
integrate it into ASUT activities and upcoming standardization processes. As a result of the
CS4 Meeting UZH was invited in the Multi-Stakeholder-Platform (MSP) meeting
afterwards. The MSP group focuses at the moment on the use-case eHealth and tries to
gain an overview of standardization activities around this topic. They recognized that this
use-case could gain advantages by applying Tussle Analysis in order to identify Tussles
and possible spillovers. Thus, UZH was asked to participate actively in the MSP group
based on the involvement and experience in ITU-T and IETF.
3.2.1.2 Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is a large open international community of
network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution of
the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the Internet. It is open to any
interested individual. The IETF Mission Statement is documented in RFC 3935.
The actual technical work of the IETF is done in its Working Groups (WG), which are
organized by topic into several areas (e.g., routing, transport, security). Much of the work
is handled via mailing lists. The IETF holds meetings three times per year. During the IETF
meetings, researchers from industry and academics meet in order to present new
standardization approaches, discuss and process them to turn them into a RFC. Due to
the development in the Internet and the technical standards, more and more topics come
into focus and become an aim for standardization. Thus, different Birds of a Feather

("BoF") meetings take place in conjunction with each IETF. The next paragraphs focus on
particular WG meetings with MAR digests.
Within IETF SmartenIT members are active in the WGs CORE, ACE and ALTO. They
regularly participate in IETF and interim meetings as reported in the following.
MAR: Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) 87, July/August 2013
The 87th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) event was held in Berlin, Germany, on
28th, 29th, 30th, 31st July and 1st, 2nd August with 1500 pre-registered participants from
industry and academics. All presentations and meeting minutes are available under the
link: https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/87/materials.html
Summarizing the relevant impact of IETF 87 for the project SmartenIT it will be important
for external liaisons in WP5 between UZH and FLAMINGO. One part of the external
liaisons looks on standardization process for securing data exchange between
communication partners and the involved access control mechanisms. Therefore, UZH
submitted a draft to the BOF of DTLS In Constrained Environments (DICE) dealing with
questions on authentication and authorization. Based on the submission good discussions
took place showing the importance of this topic, which might be interesting for further
cooperation to industry (e.g., Sensinode, Ericsson) and academic (e.g., University of
Bremen TZI, University of Oulu - Finland).
MAR: Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) 88, November 2013
The 88th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) event was held in Vancouver, BC,
Canada, on Nov 3-8, 2013 with a pre-meeting for Authorization & Authentication (AA)
group within WG CoRE on Nov 2, 2013. IETF 88 had 1500 pre-registered participants from
industry and academia. All presentations and meeting minutes are available under the link:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/88/materials.html
Summarizing the relevant impact of IETF 88 for the project SmartenIT it will be important
for external liaisons in WP5 between UZH and FLAMINGO. One part of the external
liaisons looks on standardization process for securing data exchange between
communication partners and the involved access control mechanisms. Therefore, UZH
submitted an updated version of the draft draft-schmitt-two-way-authentication-for-iot-01
dealing with questions on authentication and authorization. The updated version includes
use-case description, hardware requirements, as well as modification within the solution
section. Corinna Schmitt presented the current status within the pre-meeting of AA-group
and receiving very positive feedback and support for ongoing improvements. Discussions
took place with industry (e.g., Huawei, Ericsson) and academic (e.g., University of Bremen
- TZI, University of Oulu - Finland) in order to integrate the draft in right position within the
upcoming work in the AA group. UZH will be involved in work dealing with use-cases and
requirement specification, as well as in transport issues.
MAR: Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) 89, March 2014
The 89th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) event was held in London, England,
United Kingdom, on March 2-7, 2014 with pre-workshops on the first day. 1300 preregistered participants from industry and academics were counted for IETF 89 in London.
All presentations and meeting minutes are online available under the following link:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/89/materials.html
Summarizing the relevant impact of IETF 89 for the project SmartenIT it will be important
for external liaisons in WP5 between UZH and FLAMINGO. One part of the external
liaisons looks on standardization process for securing data exchange between
communication partners and the involved access control mechanisms. Therefore, UZH
submitted an updated version of the draft draft-schmitt-two-way-authentication-for-iot-02

dealing with questions on authentication and authorization. The updated version includes
handshake description and certificate creation details, as well as modification within the
architecture description section. Corinna Schmitt joined the BOF of the new working group
Authentication and Authorization for Constrained Environments (ACE) where the current
draft is associated. The BOF itself was very successful and waits now for approval as a
working group under IETF after charter update. Parallel to discussions during the BOF,
different individual meetings took place with industry (e.g., Huawei, Ericsson) and
academic (e.g., University of Bremen - TZI, University of Oulu Finland) in order to
integrate the draft in right position within the upcoming work in the ACE group. Next to the
aforementioned draft UZH is involved in a second draft within ACE named draftporambage-core-ace-x509-00 dealing with the usage of X.509 certificate in networks with
constraint devices.
The main outcome of IETF 89 is that different groups are interesting in the ongoing twoway authentication and certification creation process in constraint environments. All
solutions are standard based and, therefore, can be applied to different network setups as
assumed in SmartenIT.
MAR: Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) 90, July 2014
The 90th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) event was held in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada, on July 20-25, 2014 with pre-workshops and interim meetings by different
working groups on the first day. Around 1300 pre-registered participants from industry and
academics were counted for IETF 90 in Toronto. All presentations and meeting minutes
are online available under the link: https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/90/materials.html
Summarizing the relevant impact of IETF 90 for the project SmartenIT it will be important
for external liaisons in WP5 between UZH and FLAMINGO.
Due to the approval of the
working group Authentication and Authorization for Constrained Environments (ACE) a
draft renaming was essential to draft-schmitt-ace-twowayauth-for-iot-00 [11], resulting in
the replacement of the old version and receiving an I-D by IETF. The updated version
includes a generalization of requirements to class devices and preparation for upcoming
input for class 1 devices using Elliptic Curve Crypto (ECC) for two-way authentication.
Corinna Schmitt joined ACE working group meeting where the current draft is associated.
The meeting had its first formal meeting at IETF 90 and, therefore, focused on presenting
basic problem statements, use-cases, and design considerations to the community.
Corinna Schmitt including also aspects from the current draft did the latter presentation
and let the discussion. Discussion resulted in hinting where to look on, what to put out of
scope at the moment, and finding supporters for draft improvements. Parallel to
discussions during the WG meeting different individual meetings took place with industry
(e.g., Microsoft, Cisco) and academic (e.g., University of Oslo) in order to integrate the
draft in right position within the upcoming work in the ACE group and possibilities for new
views. Next to the aforementioned draft UZH was asked to update an expired draft,
entitled Compressed IPFIX for Smart Meters in Constrained Networks, dealing with
efficient data format based on the IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) Protocol and a
mediator. After discussions with Nevil Brownlee, the Independent Submissions Editor
(ISE), a submission for the ISE publication way is intended.

The main outcome of IETF 90 is that UZH is linked with its current draft about two-way
authentication to the WG ACE. All solutions are standard based and, therefore, can be
applied to different network setups as assumed in SmartenIT.
IETF ALTO WG updates
The IETF WG ALTO (for Application Layer Traffic Optimization) is standardizing a protocol
that specifies transport means providing applications with abstracted information on the
underlying network topology. ALTO provides guidance to applications w.r.t. network
topology so that they choose their endpoints with an awareness of the underlying ISP
topology and related transport costs. This awareness is materialized by information
reflecting the ISP-centric view of the Internet expressed by an abstract human-readable
description of the network topology partitioned in ISP defined network regions (PIDs), e2e
costs among PIDs and possibly amongst Endpoints.
The IETF ALTO protocol is a candidate to fulfill the SmartenIT goal to produce incentive
compatible network management mechanisms for users, overlay service providers and
network providers. In particular, it is integrated in the SmartenIT architecture and in one of
the SmartenIT Traffic Management mechanisms that optimizes application path selection
jointly w.r.t ISP and application user preferences. Sabine Randriamasy, the leader of task
T5.2 Standardization in SmartenIT has attended the ALTO WG session at the 89th IETF in
London, as a contributor the ALTO WG and its re-chartering inputs. She was also a minute
taker of this session for the ALTO WG.
MAR digest: ALTO WG re-charter preparation meeting at IETF89 London
The ALTO WG meeting at IETF89 was held on Tuesday March 6th. This meeting was of
utmost importance to the ALTO WG as it prepared the re-chartering of the WG and
discussed the pre-defined future agenda items with the WG and chairs of other WGs, in
particular CDNi and I2RS. In the agenda, 10 minutes were devoted to WG item progress
and 60 minutes for re-charter items discussion. The chairs would like to hear whether the
room thinks that the proposed milestones are achievable in reasonable time. A detailed
MAR, is available on the SmartenIT project BSCW.
The adoption of the ALTO Protocol draft as a proposed standard by the IESG had been
confirmed this same morning. The main objective of this ALTO WG meeting was to
discuss the proposed re-charter items. Four re-charter topics were identified and can be
summarized as: (i) Protocol optimization extensions (ii) Server discovery extensions (iii)
Endpoint property and e2e cost extensions: for the Data Center and CDN use cases, to
determine not only where to connect but also when (iv) Graph representation
extensions allowing deeper representation of e2e paths by adding nodes between PIDs.
The current charter items are now to be seen on http://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/alto/charter/.
The 4 re-chartering items were discussed. The WG chairs noted the requests for reformulation expressed by the attendance, in particular the Area Director and chairs of the
CDNi and I2RS WG. They concluded that will gather discussion outcomes and get back to
the list and AD for the next steps.
ALBLF contributes since 2010 with protocol extension proposals presented and discussed
at most of the ALTO WG meetings. One extension called Multi-Cost ALTO optimizes the
ALTO transactions by conveying jointly multiple costs and supporting constraints combining AND and OR operators and besides proposes new ALTO costs abstracting QoE
impacting metrics. Multi-Cost ALTO has been integrated in the design of a solution called
MUCAPS and proposed as a TM solution to the WP2 of SmartenIT. Another extension
called ALTO Cost Schedule provides time-based cost values helping to decide both

Public
where and when to connect and this concept has been integrated in re-charter item (iii).
ALBLF also co-authors an extension proposing ALTO costs based on TE metrics collected
via routing protocols. These three extension proposals relate to and motivated the recharter item (iii).
Latest ALTO updates
Since the IETF89 meeting reported in the former paragraph, the base ALTO protocol now
RFC 7285. Its publication was announced on September 5th 2014 and is available on
link: https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc7285.txt. In this RFC, the Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs
(BL) have been acknowledged for their contribution to the RFC edition (BL Murray Hill US), WG lead (NP), and the protocol design (ALBLF Villarceaux and BL Stuttgart). BL
(Naperville US) is also co-chairing the ALTO WG.
Two IETF ALTO WG meetings were held respectively at IETF90 and IETF 91 to discuss
and refine candidate protocol extension proposals relating to the new charter.
The next steps for the ALTO WG are mainly:
Execute new charter milestones published on Aug 19th 2014: 8 submissions are due
between November 2014 and July 2015
Prepare an Interoperation event with RFC7285 compliant ALTO Clients and Servers,
likely to happen at IETF92@dallas March 2015.

This discussion and first thoughts on Cloud-ISP Interface (CLISP-IF) are the initial steps to
a more thorough study together with the identification and promotion of contributions to
standardization bodies needed to support CLISP-IF and that will be further described in
the SmartenIT T5.2 Y3 reporting on this topic, defined in Section 3.3.1.
3.2.3 Main SmartenIT partner contributions to standardization bodies
The SmartenIT T5.2 achievements in terms of contributions to standardization bodies
involved in the Y3 reporting can be outlined as follows.
ITU-T SG13: UZH has proposed a development of Recommendation Y.3013: Socioeconomic Assessment of Future Networks by Tussle Analysis (approved Aug. 29, 2014).
This proposal was consented during July meeting by Working Party 3. It is aimed at the
Socio-economic Assessment of Future Networks by Tussle Analysis and was initiated
within ITU-Ts Q21/13 in 2011 by the SESERV project in order to raise the awareness for
socio-economic factors in the Future Internet landscape and standardize tussle analysis as
a tool to deal with these factors.
ITU-T RevCom: UZH also contributed to RevCom. The core objective of the Review
Committee (RevCom) is to review the structure and working methods of ITUs
Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) to ensure that ITU-T continues
meeting the standardization needs of an evolving business environment. Here UZH plans
to continue its work on including the tussle analysis (recommended in ITU-T Y.3013 [4]) to
upcoming standards. This means that each upcoming recommendation has to apply
Tussle Analysis before going for approval.
IETF ALTO WG: ALBLF contributed to the base protocol final design. The protocol
extension proposals Multi-Cost ALTO and ALTO Cost Calendar (new name for ALTO
Cost Schedule) were presented by ALBLF at IETF90 in Vancouver, and a revision ALTO
Cost Calendar was presented at IETF91 in Honolulu. Multi-Cost ALTO is integrated in
design of the MUCAPS solution, proposed to WP2 as a TM mechanism.
IETF CORE WG - now shifted to IETF ACE WG: UZH contributed on two-way
authentication for IoT and about usage of X.509 certificates. The proposed solution is
candidate for use-case in Inter-cloud scenario in WP2.
3.2.3.1 Standardization documents submitted
During Year 2, SmartenIT T5.2 contributors have submitted the following documents to
various bodies:
IETF CORE WG
C. Schmitt, B. Stiller, DTLS-based Security with two-way Authentication for IoT, draftschmitt-two-way-authentication-for-iot-02, IETF Internet Draft, Feb. 2014
Definition and relation to SmartenIT: UZH contributed several draft visions for two-way
authentication possibilities for constraint devices (e.g., sensor nodes). The first version
focused on a DTLS-based solution including X.509 certificates. The usage of X.509
certificates and the included information was specified in the second mentioned draft. Both
drafts were presented at IETF meetings during project time and on intermediate meetings.

Fremont, California, U.S.A., June 25, 2014, URL: http://tools.ietf.org/pdf/draft-schmittace-twowayauth-for-iot-00.pdf, replaces earlier IETF contributions
Definition and relation to SmartenIT: ACE is the follow up working group of CORE as
indicated before in the MARs with focus on authorization and authentication. Thus, the
draft by UZH was shifted to this group and had to be renamed. The content stayed the
same as before. The proposed solution is standard-based and can be applied to every
kind of network independent of the inclusion of sensor networks. Thus, it is interesting for
SmartenIT WP2 use-cases.

Definition: this draft extension proposal provides time-based cost values helping to
decide both where and when to connect and this concept has been integrated new
ALTO charter as item (iii).
Relation to SmartenIT: The IETF ALTO protocol is a candidate to fill the SmartenIT goal
to produce incentive compatible network management mechanisms for users, overlay
service providers and network providers. ALTO is used, together with its Multi-Cost in the
definition of a Traffic Management mechanism called MUCAPS, proposed in WP2 to
optimize cloud traffic with transport network topology awareness and that could be
advantageously combined with other WP2 TM solutions providing social and energy
awareness. The ALTO Calendar extensions providing time-based network information and
the ALTO TE-based metrics highly useful for bulk data transfers, are natural candidates for
future extensions of MUCAPS.

federation task force led by W. Burakowski of the Warsaw University. TDG provided white
paper sections on architectures, service scenarios, modeling of resource sharing, task
scheduling, Virtual Network Infrastructure. This paper was presented at an ACROSS
workshop in Sept. on the ITC 2015, see [23].
AUEB worked on use-cases and discussed possible ALTO protocol extensions with
ALBLF. They came to the following proposal:
The taskforce has produced an internal document on use cases and requirements to
highlight the importance of the Cloud-ISP interface and its impact on the market. The
Cloud-ISP interface can result in tangible benefits for both the ISP (new market of
services) and Digital Service Providers (monetization of their services, infrastructure
gains), including Content Providers, Application Providers of streaming, telepresence,
augmented reality services, CDNs, Cloud Service Providers and datacenters.
We propose to create a menu/catalogue of cost metrics for (future) time intervals. In
particular, also in accordance with the ALTO approach, these cost metrics will be abstract
weights/costs of the expected network load for specific paths and time intervals, defined by
the ISP. This information would be of high value also for the emerging federations of
clouds and datacenters that need advanced (flexible, scalable, elastic, possibly assuredquality) inter-domain network services suitable for various demands (various applications).
Use of those services should be dynamic which means federation may replace network
services from time to time. For a wide variety of use cases interconnection assisted by the
Cloud-ISP interface can bring the required results, while respecting the administrative
boundaries of the individual cloud providers. An indicative list follows:
Independent clouds/datacenters transfers: Inter-cloud communication performed to
acquire data or services (VM migration) over specific time intervals is needed to support
applications such as weather forecasts, scientific compute, stock market forecast, etc. All
those applications must be run at a specific instance in time (e.g. for stock market
prediction after the close of the stock markets) and must be completed up to a specific
time, while acquiring data from multiple sources results in significant transfers.
Cloud Federation operations: Federations of clouds/datacenters allow the on-demand
elastic scaling of resources over multiple geographical regions (e.g. cities) so as to acquire
resources as close to the end users consuming the respective services as possible. This
requires periodic transfer of data over specific future time intervals to support e.g. cloud
federation data replication bulk data transfers, security back ups.
Web back-office traffic (including CDNs): The so-called back-office Web traffic is a
large portion of the Internet inter-domain traffic, being up to 30% and occasionally 40-50%
of the total traffic of popular Internet links. The main sources contributing to this traffic are
Web proxies/intermediaries, CDN servers, ad exchanges and Web crawlers. The majority
of the data transfers (e.g. CDN cache synchronization) involved are scheduled data
transfers (e.g. pushing news, video and content in general at the end of each day from US
to Europe caches back and forth to make it globally available), hence having some
knowledge of the underlying network cost over the respective network paths and time
intervals would be highly beneficial.
Tele-presence and video-conferencing: A service that by definition is planned ahead
and will be instantiated in a future time interval.
Virtual office environments - Multi-party collaboration: Multiple potential locations for
collaboration over the Internet to take place over specific time intervals.

Live streaming: Streaming of major live events also occur in well-known fixed time
intervals in the future. Thus, having some knowledge of the underlying network cost over
the respective network paths and time intervals would be highly beneficial in order to
properly plan how content should be delivered efficiently to the service subscribers taking
into account the underlying network constraints. Gaming: including multi-party on-line
game tournaments, E-health, E-learning comprise additional similar use cases with high
latency and QoS constraints over specific network paths and time frames.
Note that this Cloud-ISP interface futures costs menu proposition is technology-agnostic
and applicable to both Best Effort and QoS-enabled paths, both intra- and inter-domain.
Regarding implementation, we envision an approach similar to that used in energy
markets, in the sense that a standardized menu a la future markets (information per next
month, week, day, hour) would be published over the interface so as to optimize REST
req-response. The granularity and time scales could be defined by ISP according to his
and his business customers needs (and what info can be disseminated) but standard time
scales would greatly contribute to market liquidity and applications monetization potential.
ALBLF proposed to leverage their protocol extension proposal ALTO Cost Calendar. Its
design facilitates the introduction of attributes such as timeFrom and timeTo proposed by
AUEB and that would delimit the time scope of the requested calendars cost information.
Besides, a possible exploitation of these attributes could be done via papers on use cases
using these features once the Calendar draft is adopted.
The input parameters to anticipated ALTO Calendar requests could include the fields
marked in bold:

How do the outcome of the standardization bodies, to which the T5.2 partners
contribute, help to improve the SmartenIT mechanisms?
How can the SmartenIT research on novel applications and network behavior provide
new use cases for standards or for proposed standard extensions?
Use cases are highly important, because they generally motivate the proposed extensions.
A reliable assessment of the T5.2 outcomes needs to consider the following aspects:
Multi-Cost ALTO: first presented in Nov. 2010, became an IETF draft in May 2015

3.3.3.1 Contributions on social-economic awareness at ITU-T
Due to the success of UZH within ITU-T and the positive feedback from industry, research
community and academia UZH continued its work within ITU-T. Based on the first Swiss
academic Recommendation Y.3013 [9] UZH pushed the integration of the Tussle Analysis
as a standard method for upcoming recommendations. Therefore, UZH became active
within the ITU-T RevCom and will participate in upcoming meetings at ITU-T. The UZH
activity is distributed as follows:

definition is in place. Furthermore, the question on how to perform the key management
and its standardization was asked.
The meeting was successful in order to continue standardization efforts under ITU in the
SG 17 addressing security issues, especially Questions 5 and 11. This activity is part of
the external liaison with EU project FLAMINGO as described in detail in Section 4.2.2.
3.3.3.3 Contribution to ITU Workshop on "Future Trust and Knowledge
Infrastructure"
UZH held a presentation on "Tussles for Edge Network caching" at the ITU Workshop on
"Future Trust and Knowledge Infrastructure", which took place on April 24, 2015 in
Geneva, Switzerland. The workshops goal was to stimulate discussion on future
converged ICT services and information infrastructure.
In this talk the Tussle Analysis was applied to a major SmartenIT scenario, to analyze and
predict socio-economic consequences, when content from social networks is cached in
nano Data Centers. Since there were several security and trust experts in the audience,
valuable feedback on the proposed solution and evaluation was received. Therefore,
UZHs presentation not only ensured SmartenITs visibility in a world-wide established and
influential standardization organization, it also provided the basis for the establishment of a
valuable feedback for the project to further improve the developed uNaDa caching
strategies. Most importantly, the talk brought attention to the newly standardized Tussle
Analysis, which supports its deployment by ITU member in the future development of ITU
recommendations.
3.3.3.4 Contributions on authentication for IoT at IETF ACE
UZH is also active in IETF in the WG ACE looking on authentication for constraint
environments. The current active Internet draft, entitled Two-way Authentication for IoT,
see [5], was updated with new sections and feedback from the community for upcoming
IETF meetings. Furthermore, WP2 assumes to integrate the proposed authentication
mechanisms, as a use-case scenario in the future of SmartenIT as the proposed solution
is a potential use-case in the Inter-cloud scenario in WP. In parallel UZH investigated how
the IETF work can be transferred to the ITU activity in the area of IoT.
Based on the positive feedback in the years before, UZH continued the work on the twoway authentication in year 3 of SmartenIT. This includes an update of the draft entitled
Two-way Authentication for IoT. The first update published in December 2014 included
an update of the assumed architecture and use-cases description in general [16]. In June
2015 UZH updated the draft again including now handshake description and hardware
requirements for more constraint device class1 devices [15].
Due to the publications of IETF drafts and the participation in IETF meetings UZH was
invited to present the security solution in the industry (e.g., Siemens Technology, Surfsara)
as well as in the ITU-T in Study Group 17.
Beyond development of security solution as published within IETF ACE UZH was invited to
present its efficient data format TinyIPFIX at the NMRG workshop in conjunction with IETF
93 in July 2015. This is an application that uses a template-based format for message
content based on the IPFIX standard for monitoring in IP networks. Together with the
development of a new header format UZH was able to overcome the additional 20 Byte
header for IPFIX to make the format available for constraint devices and save message.

All mentioned activities are part of the external liaison with EU project FLAMINGO as
described in D5.4. Due to the positive feedback UZH will continue the security activity in
IETF beyond the project end of SmartenIT.
3.3.3.5 Contributions on cross-layer cooperation at IETF ALTO WG
ALTO protocol extensions within the WG charter: The base ALTO protocol is now RFC
7285 and the ALTO WG has been re-chartered in August 2014. The new charter is
published on http://tools.ietf.org/wg/alto/charters. The ALTO Cost Calendar concept is
integrated in its extension item 3 that in particular plans Protocol extensions to convey a
richer set of attributes to allow applications to determine not only "where" to connect but
also "when" to connect.. ALTO WG contributors are requested to provide, besides WG
items textual contributions, robust and running code on protocol functions. ALBLF puts the
focus on an elaborated ALTO Client that interoperates with ALTO Servers from different
companies and institutions written in different software environments. The ALBLF
achievements are the following:

Multi-Cost ALTO optimizes the ALTO transactions by conveying jointly multiple costs
and supporting constraints combining AND and OR operators and besides proposes
new ALTO costs abstracting QoE impacting metrics.
The ALTO Cost Calendar provides time-based cost values helping to decide both
where and when to connect. ALBLF also co-authors an extension proposing ALTO
costs based on TE metrics collected via routing protocols. These three extension
proposals relate to and motivated the ALTO re-charter item number (iii).
Moving the IETF draft ALTO deployment considerations to the Working Group Last
Call step,
During this meeting, Piotr Wydrych from AGH presented the concept of inter-ALTO,
related to SmartenIT as well, to see whether the WG was interested in this work. The
audience was in favor of this work being continued and related draft being submitted.
MAR-ALBLF-2015-ALTO-IETF93
Sabine Randriamasy, the leader of task T5.2 Standardization in SmartenIT has attended
the ALTO WG session at the 93rd IETF in Prague, as a contributor the ALTO WG and its
re-chartering inputs.
This session was chaired by: Jan Seedorf from NEC and Sebastian Kiesel from the
university of Stuttgart, in the absence of Vijay Gurbani who attended from remote.
For the IETF93 meeting there were 2 ALTO WG events:
The ALTO interoperation event that took place on Monday July 20th. The purpose was
to interoperate ALTO Clients and Servers in order to detect bugs in the ALTO
protocols. Implementation bugs are out of scope and participants helped each other
when it was possible.

The ALTO WG session on July 21st with agenda preferences has been given to WG
work-items and personal drafts generating list discussion. Interop results were given by
the chairs and showed no protocol bugs.
ALBLF contributes since 2010 with protocol extension proposals under which 2 were
presented and discussed at most of the ALTO WG meetings:
Multi-Cost ALTO: this draft has been adopted as a WG document at the last IETF92. It
optimizes the ALTO transactions by conveying jointly multiple costs and supporting
constraints combining AND and OR operators and besides proposes new ALTO costs
abstracting QoE impacting metrics.
The ALTO Cost Calendar: provides time-based cost values helping to decide both where
and when to connect. ALBLF also co-authors an extension proposing ALTO costs based
on TE metrics collected via routing protocols. These three extension proposals relate to
and motivated the ALTO re-charter item number (iii).
The activity of the ALTO WG is now geared towards implementations. The audience was
very restricted but had a majority of people involved in implementations. In particular,
Benocs, a company associated to Deutsche Telekom presented their ALTO Server
implementation with no draft yet associated.
During this meeting, ALBLF presented the updates on Multi-Cost ALTO and ALTO Cost
Calendar. AGH presented a draft on the inter-ALTO problem statement, related to
SmartenIT as well.
Main Interests of SmartenIT in the IETF ALTO meetings attendance
SmartenIT, like the ALTO WG addresses cooperation between the application layer and its
underlying network topology to support incentive compatible network management mechanisms for users, overlay service providers and network providers.
Multi-Cost ALTO: is integrated in the design of the traffic management solution MUCAPS
that has been prototyped for SmartenIT and documented in deliverables D2.4, D2.5, D3.3,
D4.3 and D5.3ini.
ALTO Cost Calendar: is a placeholder to support protocol features for ISP-Cloud
Interfaces in the case of Best Effort traffic. Such features would allow applications to make
anticipated request for time-dependent network cost values.
3.3.4.4 Follow-up of IRTF ICNRG for applicability to uNaDas overlay
During Project Year 3, ICOM icontinued to monitor the IRTF ICNRG and assess whether
any SmartenIT related contributions could be made. At the same time, the progress of
ICNRGs activities may have provided input to the SmartenIT activities. Below, we provide
some preliminary ideas on where and how ICN aspects could be considered and related to
the SmartenIT activities:
The overlay between uNaDas (user- or ISP-owned ones) could rely on ICN primitives
and actually could benefit from the existence of ICN-enabled network functions such as
search, discovery and advertising of content.

structure enriched with social aspects. Moreover, certain QOS aspects considered in
the Adaptive Video Streaming over ICN draft can be investigated by SmartenIT.
The SmartenIT timeline and ICNRG progress did not allow further integration of INCRG
concepts. But it is worth keeping an eye on ICNRG for the use case of nano Data Centers.
3.3.5 Standardization documents submitted
During Year 3, SmartenIT T5.2 contributors have submitted the following documents to
various bodies:
IETF ACE WG
C.Schmitt, B.Stiller: Two-way Authentication for IoT (Version 01), IETF Internet Draft,
Standards Track, ACE, Version 01, draft-schmitt-ace-twowayauth-for-iot-01, December
2014, http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-schmitt-ace-twowayauth-for-iot-01
C.Schmitt, M. Noack, B.Stiller: Two-way Authentication for IoT (Version 02), IETF
Internet Draft, Standards Track, ACE, Version 02, draft-schmitt-ace-twowayauth-for-iot02, June 2015. http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-schmitt-ace-twowayauth-for-iot-02
Definition and relation to SmartenIT: As pointed out for Y2 of SmartenIT UZH continued
IETF activity in with focus on authorization and authentication. Thus, the drafts by UZH
were updated periodically. The proposed solution is standard-based and can be applied to
every kind of network independent of the inclusion of sensor networks. Thus, it is
interesting for SmartenIT WP2 use-cases.

4 External Liaisons
In this Section the external liaisons within SmartenIT are addressed. First, the announced
liaisons strategy is characterized as pointed out in D5.1, followed by a short description of
each external liaisons project, its research focus in cooperation with SmartenIT, and the
main achievements during the three years project period. Finally, in Section 4.3 per
project achievements and liaisons results based on selection criteria are presented. Those
results are split into benefits for SmartenIT and benefits for the special external liaisons
project.
Phase 1 defined the external liaisons strategy (as covered in the deliverable at
hand) and the initial set of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for documenting the
execution of the strategy during the first project year. In addition, the first phase in
external liaisons dealed with the identification and selection of candidate projects
with which SmartenIT plans to engage. The above criteria determine the frame
based on which a selection of candidate projects is made.
Accordingly, phases 3 and 4 were planned to start in parallel with phase 2. Phases
3 and 4 grouped liaising activities along the key set of focal points SmartenIT will
adopt and work upon in the respective time frame. These time frames were in-line
with SmartenITs project plan, plus the envisioned focal points are aligned with the
key project assets.
The same applied to phase 5 and its liaising orientation, while phase 5 started in
project year 2 and will continue until end of the project.
Throughout the project duration external liaisons with 9 other projects were established.
The following 6 projects were selected initially in Phase 1 of the external liaisons plan:
eCousin (enhanced COntent distribUtion with Social Information, web site not yet
available): Social-aware network architecture with built-in content dissemination
functionality, interested in socially aware traffic management (2012-2015) [36].

influenced the design of the experiments for evaluation and overall assessment of
SmartenIT mechanisms.
"Security is an important topic. [...]." - While security is of high relevance, it was finally

justify collaboration.
4.2.2 FLAMINGO
The project FLAMINGO [31], which is part of the EU FP7 Program and founded under
Contract No. CNECT-ICT-318488, applies an economic and legal/regulatory analysis for a
number of technologies researched and developed in the Network of Excellence. During
SmartenIT project time UZHs main focus was on standardization within this external
liaison addressing the following two topics:
1. Tussle Analysis
2. Authentication mechanisms for constrained devices in the Internet of Things (IoT)
Within the ITU-T UZH was active in the Study Group (SG) 13, Question 16 (Environmental and socio-economic sustainability in future networks (FN) and early realization of
FNs) to define the Recommendation Y.3013 entitled Socio-economic assessment of
future networks by tussle analysis, which was published in August 2014.
Recommendation ITU-T Y.3013 introduces tussle analysis as a meta-method for a socioeconomic assessment of Future Network (FN) technology. Different methods are proposed
to implement the three steps that comprise tussle analysis. The benefits of integrating
tussle analysis into the standardization phase of FN technology are highlighted. [9].
Under IETF the focus of UZH was on authentication mechanisms for constrained devices
in the Internet of Things (IoT) within the Working Group ACE (Authentication and
Authorization for Constrained Environments). Constrained devices a used in Wireless
Sensor Networks (WSN) and are limited in memory, computational capacity, and power.
Due the fact, that every kind of measured data includes sensitive information (e.g., ID,
address, medical information) only authenticated items (e.g., persons, devices) should
have access to it. Thus, UZH developed an Internet draft entitled Two-way Authentication
for IoT providing two solutions for constrained devices supporting two-way authentication
[11]. Depending on the device resources two-way authentication can be gained by
performing a DTLS handshake with X.509 certificates for resource-full devices or with a
modified Bellare-Canetti-Krawczyk (BCK) protocol with pre-shared keys and elliptic curve
cryptography (ECC) support for devices with fewer resources. Both solutions are standard
based, support the security fundamentals authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality, and

are successful implemented and deployed. Based on the DTLS approach UZH was
involved in the Internet draft on X.509 specifying necessary and optional information for
X.509 Public Key Infrastructure Certificates for the Constrained Application Protocol
(CoAP) [12]. Throughout the project period of SmartenIT periodical updated oft he drafts
were performed and will continue beyond the end of the project.
4.2.3 Lightness
LIGHTNESS [40] (Low latency and high throughput dynamic network infrastructures for
high performance datacentre interconnects) is a 3-year FP7 STREP project started on
November 1st, 2012. Its main objective is the design, implementation and experimental
evaluation of a high-performance network infrastructure for data centres based on
innovative photonic switching and transmission solutions. In particular, the optical DCN
designed in LIGHTNESS is based on a mix of Optical Circuit Switching (OCS) and Optical
Packet Switching (OPS) and it is controlled through SDN technologies and OpenFlow
protocol with suitable extensions.
LIGHTNESS control plane is based on an extended version of OpenDaylight, Hydrogen
release, which has been enhanced to support optical technologies with a dedicated driver
that implements the OCS extensions to the OpenFlow 1.0 protocol. The controller
provides advanced functionalities for a dynamic and flexible DCN management, with
procedures for provisioning and re-configuration of DCN resources, energy-aware
resource allocation algorithms and resiliency mechanisms to protect critical application
workload flows and for network service restoration in case of data plane failures.
LIGHTNESS control plane offers a flexible Cloud-to-Network interface to allow the data
centre management request for dynamic connectivity services, according to the application
requirements.
However, it does not investigate any specific integration with cloud orchestration platforms,
limiting its focus only on the DCN segment.
An exploratory meeting has been done among Interoute and NXW to discuss possible
liaisons, but at that time, since both projects, SmartenIT and LIGHTNESS has started at
the same time and follows similar time schedule, only a very initial alignment of project
scope and deliverables for high-level architecture, use-cases and scenario description has
been possible.
At a more mature stage, when the main high-level products of both projects have been
delivered, it has been clear that LIGHTNESS is focused on intra-DC traffic management
without any interest in investigating inter-datacenter (inter-DC) and inter-domain topics.
Moreover overlay applications, end-user related topics (Quality of Experience (QoE)),
access devices and Social networks) and related traffic are totally out of scope of
LIGHTNESS project. LIGHTNESS use-cases have been analyzed and checked against to
SmartenIT and scenarios to understand their re-usability within SmartenIT framework, but
no overlap has been assessed.
As a final consideration, having the two projects orthogonal interests and strict schedule
for develop activities, it has been remarked the difficulty to diverge researchers focus from
the hardware/software development and the respective deadlines, thus making concrete
inter-project activities no possible.

4.2.4 NOVI
The EC FP7/FIRE STREP project NOVI [41] worked on solutions to compose eInfrastructures on top of virtual resources and services provided by diverse yet federated
Future Internet (FI) platforms. The project developed a pilot implementation, established
an experimental environment and conducted a series of experiments. The knowledge and
experience collected along the time of the project have been exploited by the SmartenIT
team and allowed to save the time and made better choices.
A valuable input and support from the NOVI project were important in the following free
work areas:
Definition of use-cases
Software development of the pilot implementation
Building test infrastructure and definition of experiments
In case of use-cases a template for detailed definition was thoroughly analyzed and based
on conclusions and discussion with the NOVI team the SmartenIT created the new one,
suitable for its needs. This approach simplified the process of working on use-cases by
formulating a standardized set of information required to describe each use-case. Such
descriptions were necessary for further work on experiment definitions.
The next NOVI contribution that was important for SmartenIT is software development
consultancy. NOVI implemented high-quality pilot with the use of modern software tools,
methods and procedures. The NOVI experts helped to establish the software development
support platform that allowed to smoothly implementing the SmartenIT pilot. Moreover, the
experience of NOVI was taken into account when the SmartenIT project made the decision
which software solutions (libraries, frameworks, etc.) are the most appropriate.
Also, the NOVI work results on experiments and building the test infrastructure were
analysed to avoid repetition of the same work. For example, the information about
FEDERICA testbed infrastructure provided by the NOVI team was considered when
SmartenIT was analyzing whether to use one of the existing external testbed
infrastructures as an environment for its experiments.
4.2.5 SAIL
The SAIL project [42] was an FP7 project that was concluded only few months after
SmartenIT started, thus there only was a unilateral liaison with it, mainly in the context a
methodology developed by SAIL that was adopted by SmartenIT to perform analysis of
value among stakeholders in specific scenarios of interest.
In particular, SAIL focused on improving application support via an information-centric
paradigm, replacing the old host-centric one, enabling the co-existence of legacy and new
networks via virtualisation of resources and self-management, and embracing
heterogeneous media from fibre backbones to wireless access networks, developing new
signalling and control interfaces.
SAILs objective was the research and development of novel networking technologies
using proof-of-concept prototypes to lead the way from current networks to the Network of
the Future. SAIL aimed to leverage state of the art architectures and technologies, and
reduce costs for setting up, running, and combining networks, applications and services,
increasing the efficiency of deployed resources (e.g., personnel, equipment and energy).

D5.4
As a result of the short liaison with SAIL, SmartenIT got familiar with the Value Network
Configuration (VNC) methodology employed in D1.1 [32], D2.3 [33] and D2.5 [34] to
analyze the flow of value among stakeholders in a considered setup. VNC is considered
important for the analysis compared to simple value chain, as it allows someone to
investigate more complex relationships and to assign different roles to different
stakeholder depending on the business model assumed.
4.2.6 STAR
The STAR (SwiTching And tRansmission, [35]) project has been funded within the ChistEra framework and has been running from December 2012. It is expected to end in
November 2015. When both projects were in their initial phases, direct contact with Dr.
Piotr Choda and Artur Laso (both with the AGH University) was established and potential
liaisons areas were recognized.
In both SmartenIT and STAR, inter-layer mechanisms were considered. However, there
were significant differences in projects points-of-view. In particular, STARs focus was on
optical networks and their interest ranged from the physical up to transport layer, while
SmartenIT interest was mainly in the application layer. Moreover, the objective of STAR
was not to work on influencing the traffic to fit networks needs, but on changing the
network settings to fit traffics needs (e.g., by path establishment if needed).
The STAR project did not perform such a detailed stakeholders analysis as has been
done in SmartenIT. Instead, they considered only two main stakeholders: (1) ISP (main
focus: reliability and risk management), and (2) energy market regulator (influencing
significantly energy efficiency aspects and fostering development of green networking
concept).
Given the fact that the works of the projects were not coherent, representatives of
SmartenIT and STAR projects decided to suspend content-wise liaisons after few
meetings. Representatives of SmartenIT monitored STARs works looking for potential
new content-wise liaison areas, but they have not been identified until the end of the
SmartenIT project and the liaisons have not been resumed.
4.2.7 SIGMONA
The SIGMONA1 project, SDN Concept in Generalized Mobile Network Architectures,
investigates network architectures and functions for evolution of the LTE/EPC (3GPP)
mobile networks. The main focus of SIGMONA is on the network, including the LTE radio
system, and is taken. The project aims at evaluation, specification and validation of a
Software Defined Mobile Network concept designed onto the SDN, network virtualization
and cloud computing principles, while it aims to provide an insight into the feasibility and
opportunities of such network concepts, as well as evaluate the limits of performance and
scalability of the new technologies applied on mobile broadband networks.
New opportunities for traffic, resource and mobility management, and use cases, such as
content delivery in mobile networks are studied, whereas network virtualization solutions in
the mobile transport networks, as well as effects on the network monitoring and network
management solutions are relevant, too. As it is also foreseen that the investments on the
network and operational costs would change, hence SIGMONA also outlines the impact

onto cost of network, value chain and business models, describing also the model of open
interfaces, the role of standards and related bodies.
In this context, some issues of common interest between the two projects, SIGMONA and
SmartenIT, have been identified, such as the content delivery over mobile networks use
case and the inter-DC communication scenario, associated business models and market
analysis. Indeed, an interaction among the two project started on this basis which included
often email exchanges with newly produced material by each project, e.g., deliverables on
state of the art, and few phone conferences, during which various issues of common
interest were discussed, i.e., initial scenario description, stakeholder analysis and
characterization, tussle analysis, value network configurations and business modeling.
As a result, a joint article and poster were published in the SETM 2013 workshop, coorganized by SmartenIT and e-COUSIN EU projects. The title of the article and poster is
Video Delivery over Next Generation Cellular Networks, and the contributing authors
were Manos Dramitinos (AUEB), Miroslaw Kantor (AGH), and Ioanna Papafili (AUEB) from
SmartenIT, and Nan Zhang (Aalto University) and Jose Costa Requena (Aalto University)
from SIGMONA.
The article focused on the rapidly increasing use of mobile devices, such as smart phones
and tablets, as well as the high popularity of mobile applications and especially video
streaming that incur an increasing traffic demand on mobile cellular systems. The cloud
computing and the SDN paradigms have been identified as suitable tools for mobile
networks to efficiently handle the increasing video traffic. Therefore, this joint article
performs an analysis of content and, in particular, video delivery services on top of emerging and next generation cellular networks which employ SDN in their core, mainly from a
business standpoint. Indeed, we identified the stakeholders and analyzed their business
interests and relationships, also providing a value network (by means of the VNC methodology) and business model analysis for both existing and emerging use cases of interest.
Liaisons with SIGMONA are further continuing with material exchange such as new project
deliverables and publications on revenue and cost models, revenue and cost sharing, charging issues and money flows for the use cases of our common interest, e.g., network sharing, Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), or SDN-based Radio-Clouds.
4.2.8 Fed4FIRE and FELIX
Fed4FIRE [44] is an FP7 project addressing the work program topic Future Internet
Research and Experimentation. It started in October 2012 and will run for 48 months, until
the end of September 2016. Fed4FIRE aims to establish a common federation framework
by developing, adapting or adopting tools that support experiment lifecycle management,
monitoring and trustworthiness. A large number of existing experimentation facilities in
Europe are being adapted to seamlessly integrate in the federation. Such facilities typically
focus on different kinds of networking related research or on different communities
regarding services and applications. Example domains are optical networking, wireless
networking, software defined networking, cloud computing, grid computing, or smart cities.
Additionally, the primary objective of the FELIX [45] project (FEderated Test-beds for
Large-scale Infrastructure eXperiments) is to create a common framework in which users
can request, monitor and manage a slice provisioned over distributed and distant Future
Internet experimental facilities in Europe and Japan. To achieve its goals, FELIX proposes

For the two external liaisons STAR and Lightness no benefits were achieved.
In the first year of SmartenIT it was realized that the work of the two projects were not
coherent and, thus, the external liaisons was finished soon.
The liaison activity between Lightness and SmartenIT has been carefully and deeply
performed by crosschecking first the main projects scopes, and secondly the main projects
outcomes in terms of system architecture and use-cases. The outcomes of the analysis
has recognized that the two projects can be seen as complementary, but due to strict time
constraints neither of the two project have been able to broaden their own project scope in
order to overlap with the other project. Following that, no concrete/tangible outcomes have
been provided by the liaison activity between Lightness and SmartenIT for both projects.

EU project demonstrations and posters. Prior to the event, thirteen pre-FIA workshops
took place and a 5G-Public Private Partnership event was organised on the last day.
The FIA working session on Cloud Federations and SDN/NFV: the highways towards
improved QoE, Cost and Energy Efficiency was coorganized by G.D. Stamoulis and R.
Lapacz from SmartneIT consortium. This session aimed to set the stage for cloud
federation, and for Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function
Virtualization (NFV) paradigms as its enablers. Experts from the industry, academia, and
NRENs addressed important questions, e.g.: How can cloud federations benefit from the
use of SDN/NFV? E.g. can SDN/NFV enable the provision of services seamlessly
incorporating heterogeneous services from different operators? What is the impact of
SDN/NFV-enabled cloud federations to ISPs? How will their traffic management be
affected?
Due to the very interesting presentations of the session speakers that represented various
players of the market (ISPs, NRENs, academia, IEEE, EC expert group) and the fruitful
discussion that followed, SmartenIT participants gained insight into current practices in
cloud federations (test-beds), the role that SDN/NFV can play in this context, as well as
the individual view of the respective players, their expectations and concerns.

NOMS2014 (Krakow, Poland)
The 14th IFIP/IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium (NOMS2014) was
held in Krakow, Poland on May 5-9, 2014 with A.R. Pach (AGH), D. Zuckermann
(Zuckerman Associates) as General Co-chairs, K.Wajda as OC Chair. This event was
targeted at the Management in a Software-defined World main theme and has shown a
number of related key note presentations as well as paper sessions.
During the NOMS different research questions in the fields of Network virtualization,
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), Bid Data and the role of networks, and Internet of
Things (IoT) have been outlined, presented, and solutions or proposals have been
presented. The generally discussed topics, especially Big Data, raised a question on how
to handle, store, route, analyze and characterize the traffic that is produced by (a) the
increasing number of smart phone users and (b) the sensors that constantly generate
traffic. Furthermore, with respect to Software-defined networks the key interest was on
determining the real problems in migrations and operations, ensuring that current
drawbacks (e.g., operation and communication of SDN controllers across several
domains) can be solved. Thus, since SmartenIT focuses on dynamic traffic management,
the project is aligned with the main topics that have been addressed in NOMS 2014.
Additionally, Burkhard Stiller, as the IFIP TC6.6 Vice Chair run jointly with the IEEE CNOM
Chair Lisandro Zambenedetti Granville the IFIP/CNOM meeting, which promoted the
network and service management area, outlined the conference and workshop statistics of
2013/2014 events under support from IFIP TC6.6 and CNOM, and discussed a newly

D5.4
updated structure of the research area with respect to a suitable taxonomy. The last topic
was undertaken as a liaison work between FLAMINGO and SmartenIT.
Summarizing the relevant impact of NOMS 2014 for the SmartenIT project it will be
relevant for the project, too, to consider potentially security and privacy issues within the
WSN and Internet-of-Things (IoT) area, while respecting at the same time any energyrelated constraints. Furthermore, SmartenIT acknowledges the fact that the data
generated by on-line social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter with 10 vs. 7 Tera
Byte per day each, respectively, do affect the networks in operation. As such, SmartenITs
approach to smarten the respective traffic management mechanisms is inline with up-todate demands. Additionally, the role of data centers and their traffic demands for virtual
machines placements and inter-data center migration leads to demands of effective traffic
management and of monitoring virtual machines.
The partners of the SmartenIT project were contributed to NOMS 2014 with two
demonstrators, one paper in the mini conference session, and one full paper in the
technical session:

PSNC with AGH prepared a paper entitled Implementation of new methods of data traffic
in overlay networks and cloud environments". The authors focused on DTM which is one
of the network traffic management mechanisms developed in the project. Both, the
algorithm of mechanism and the implementation have been clearly described. Moreover,
the information about the integration of DTM with another SmartenIT mechanism, ICC,
was included.
During the event KSTiT2015 PSNC and AGH teams organized a showcase presenting
how the implementation of DTM works in reality. A GUI application with remote access to a
running DTM tested was used to visualize DTM in action. The conference audience was
able to hear and see detailed information about DTM.

5.3.2 Other events
To ensure that those interactions from dedicated personnel will see a project-internal
impact, SmartenIT designed these Meeting Attendance Reports (MAR), which are
provided by the person(s) traveling after those meetings, to (a) prepare a meeting digest
for publications on the SmartenIT Web site, (b) a detailed Meeting, Conference, Event
technical details section, and (c) an impact on SmartenIT summary. All of those MARs
prepared in Year 1 (16 MARs), Year 2 (27 MARs) and Year 3 (22 MARs) of SmartenIT
are listed below in the three tables. Additionally, those MARs are available in the
Reviewers Intranet, prepared for the annual project progress review.

Periodically UZH looks on the website statistics with the help of Google Analytics. The goal
is to receive information about the visits on the homepage including information about visit
duration, new visitors, region of visitors, how visitors find the project page, and which are
the most interesting pages of SmartenIT.
The SmartenIT website went online at February 1, 2013. For the upcoming website
analysis the period goes until October 26, 2015:
Sessions: 8,665
Visitors: 4,593
Pages/Session: 2.46
Table 7 shows the page analytics split for each year in order to show the development.

Google Analytics gives the opportunity to look on the audience from different perspectives.
On the one hand it is possible to receive information to which countries the visitors belong
to and which sites they visit. When looking into Figure 5, most of the visitors come from the
partners countries. It is assumed that this is the result of individual partners dissemination
strategies (e.g., selected conferences, workshops, lecture and theses involvements). Top
3 visited sites of SmartenIT`s Website are the entrance page including publications,
partner information, and overview (cf. Figure 7).

When looking on smaller reporting parts of years (e.g., quarters) the outcome shown in
Figure 5 to Figure 8 can differ. But the overall result of the dissemination strategy
concerning the project website is good. The goal for the upcoming year should be to
reduce the bouncing rate, to attract more new visitors, and to raise the avg. duration time.
All this can be reached when the project partners support UZH in updating the SmartenIT
website, to publish and disseminate successfully, and follow the original dissemination
strategy of SmartenIT.

The work on Cloud-ISP Interface is part of a white paper of the COST ACROSS group
see [23],
The ALTO Cost Calendars proposal is waiting for a WG adoption decision while being
an enabler for features to support Cloud-ISP IF for best effort traffic.
The Multi-Cost ALTO proposal is now an IETF ALTO WG document, while being in
the design of the MUCAPS prototype, one of the SmartenIT asset documented in
deliverables D2.4, D2.5, D3.3, D4.3 and D5.3ini.
The AGH proposal in inter-ALTO was presented at the three last ALTO WG session
and is gaining traction in the WG.
The main benefit for UZH is the Recommendation Y.3013 and the activity within IETF
on two-way authentication, where IETF drafts are and will be updated periodically to
continue after SmartenIT. Both activities are strongly related to the EU Project
FLAMINGO as outlined in T5.1 of WP5. The exploitation of those standardization
activities by UZH is referred in D5.3, especially in Section 4.3.
Therefore, the achievements of task T5.2 show how the SmartenIT project assets are well
aligned with the current standardization bodies activities.
Dissemination of results was another success story for the project. SmartenIT project
established reasonable dissemination channels for specific purposes and target audience.
The non-technical audience was mainly reached by project's web-page, on-line releases,
social networking, project white papers. The research community was approached by
participation in conferences and workshops when presenting papers and giving talks, as
well as by publications in scientific journals and magazines. The statistics of dissemination
categories are given in Table 3.
The project addressed also directly the academia community by improving curricula of
training courses for students, internship projects. Master and doctoral theses in areas
related to the project were also supervised and information about finished these were
spread among partners.
