What Plants

Need To Grow
First Grade
Science

Objective
The students will be able to
demonstrate their
understanding of what plants
need to survive after listening
to the lecture while viewing
the powerpoint, and then
completing a worksheet by
circling what plants need to
survive with 100% accuracy.

Standard Indicator
Standard 1.L.5: The student
will demonstrate an
understanding of how the
structures of plants help them
survive and grow in their
environment.
Indicator 1.L.5B1: Conduct
structured investigations to
answer questions about what
plants need to live and grow
(including air, water, sunlight,
minerals, and space).

WHAT DO PLANTS NEED TO

SURVIVE?
1) Sunlight
2) Air
3) Water
4) Nutrients
(Food)
5) Soil (Space)

NUTRIENTS
(FOOD/MINERALS)
Nutrients are the
things that help us
grow big and strong.
We get them from the
food we eat.
Like humans, plants
also need nutrients to
grow big and strong.
They get their
nutrients from the
soil

WATER
Plants need water
just like humans
The water helps
carry Nutrients
(food) through
the plant

AIR
Plants take in the carbon dioxide in the
air to help them with Photosynthesis
They also give off oxygen which is
what we use to breathe

SOIL (SPACE)
The roots of the plant
are in the soil so when
the plant grows bigger,
the roots can spread out
and have something to
hold on to.

You need lots of

space for the
roots to spread
out so the plant
can grow big.

SUNLIGHT
The sun helps the
plant stay warm and
gives the plant
energy!
Plants then use that
energy to make their
food through a
process call

SO WHAT DO PLANTS NEED TO

GROW?

1)Sunshine for energy

2)Nutrients for food
3)Soil for space to grow
4)Air to help make food
5)Water to carry the
food
