Course Description:

This course is designed to deliver further instruction and knowledge of common musical
theories and practices at an advanced level in order to prepare the student for more difficult
concepts in the future.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

By the end of the semester, the student should be able to:

Be able to analyze with Roman Numerals basic chorales and literature.

Identify the different types of inversions.
Be able to listen and notate melodies and harmonies played during aural training
sessions.
Become introduced to secondary dominant chords.
Be able to notate and analyze the circle of fifths progressions.
Identify different types of seventh chords and their inversions.

Assignments:

You will be required to complete 6 separate assignments during the duration of this
course. All work is expected to be completed on time and in an orderly fashion. Cheating on
these assignments will result in an immediate failure of this course.

All late work will be docked 20% of the final score for each consecutive day that it is not
turned in. After three days past the due date, late work will no longer be accepted.

Assignment 1: 7th Chord Worksheet

Assignment 2: Aural Quiz
Assignment 3: Secondary Dominant Seventh Chords Worksheet
Assignment 4: Midterm Exam
Assignment 5: Circle of Fifths progression Sheet
Assignment 6: Final Exam and Aural Final

Attendance:

Attendance for this course is mandatory unless you have a viable excuse for being
absent. Acceptable excuses are: Doctors Appointment, Funeral, Sickness, Etc. Each student will
be allowed a total of 3 unexcused absences until it starts to affect their grade. After the third
absence, each absence will dock 10 points from your final grade. If a student is absent for 8
classes, then that student automatically fails the course.

It is better to show up late than not at all. Tardiness doesnt affect your grade and does
not count as an absent.

Academic Dishonesty:

Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated in this course. Any student who is caught
cheating will fail automatically with no exceptions. I expect each student to do his/her own
work for the duration of this class and each assignment is to be completed by you and you
alone.

Grading Structure:

The final course grade will be out of 500 points, divided as follows:

Assignment 1 50 pts
Assignment 2 100 pts
Assignment 3 50 pts
Assignment 4 100 pts
Assignment 5 50 pts
Assignment 6 150 pts

Grading Scale:

430 500 = A
360 430 = B

290 360 = C
200 290 = D
0-200 = E
