Yes, a lot of notes go up on Moodle so they are handy to take down if you are
struggling in the class. As well as that, the members in the class have Facebook
groups and if you are part of that, you can ask them for help in an area you might be
struggling in.
P2:
Its easier to stay in touch with friends, using technology. Its easier type up notes and
store them.
P3:
Students use smartphones for checking Facebook, college emails and stuff like that.
P4:
Modern technologies destroyed any social skills young people have these days
because youre interacting with a screen and not a human life.
P5:
For example, now everybody is on Facebook so for work you can get in touch with
people that you see just one time.
P6:
I suppose, modern technology today gives you wider access for studying, more stuff
online.
P7:
Everything is typed online, essays are submitted online. You know, a lot of research is
online.
P8:
I believe students use technology a lot for communication and to access information.
P9:
Modern technology is needed for up-to-date information and for communicating with
others.
P10:
Well students are very dependent on Facebook for keeping in touch and doing
assignments.
P11:
Yeah its really easy to keep in contact with friends for meeting up
and going out and stuff and with study the likes of Moodle makes it a lot easier.
P12:
P13:
One example for college would be to use site such as Moodle to help with study and
upload exam.
P14:
it makes the world a smaller place makes everyone aware of whats going on around
them; you can use the internet to help learn so much. There are great advantages in
technologies.
P15:
P16:
P17:
Well we use it to do a lot of assignments and to get in contact with lecturers and
students.
P18:
P19:
Am Students need it because ah just like sites like Moodle to help them study and ah
to keep in contact with lecturers as well when they cant see them face to face and
with other students on social media sites as well.
P20:
Yeah you can get in contact with somebody very quickly and easy access for study.
P21:
Am because they need them to communicate and take notes off Moodle.
P22:
P23:
P24:
Because they need them to communicate with friends and get notes online.
P25:
Am because they need them to talk to their friends and look up notes for college.
P26:
P27:
Because most lecturers put notes and exam information online these days.
P28:
Well. Without technology now, you can't submit essays or assignments, you can't do
your college work. Nobody handwrites any more.
P29:
I feel like loads of people, everyone basically is on Facebook and Twitter and the
likes, and would stay social through that by chatting to people who they wouldn't be
close to or living close to when you're away from college and stuff, also everything
is available via tutorials and stuff like that online for students, and I feel they find help
through links like that.
P30:
Well, students have everything, you can get every bit of information you can think
of on your phone, and it does help you to kind of stay connected like, in a group chat
with your class it's really good.
P31:
For students it's easier to access notes within group chats, it's easier messaging
people. Lecturers usually throw up notes on Moodle for students to access and
faster to look up answers online than going through notes.
it's
P32:
In GMIT, Moodle notes, students use them to take notes, research answers, storage
and usb sticks, Cloud computing, and so on.
P33:
They use the social to get in contact with anyone and they use it for study to get notes
off the internet and stuff
P34:
They use it to stay social as they get in contact with people through Facebook if they
don't have their numbers or don't have phones with them, they can use their
laptop/computer and for study wise they can access a wider range of information
through the internet.
P35:
Say for things like finding information online and things like that, it is a lot more
useful nowadays because everything you want for exams and things can be found
online instead of having to go searching through a book.
P36:
Well they depend on moodle and the internet for notes and exam papers and stuff.

Do you think students nowadays use these technologies more, in comparison to students
over the last 10 years? Could you please expand?
P1:
Yes. The advancements in technology have made it more accessible for students
nowadays to get at these resources compared to 10 years ago.
P2:
Certainly. Technology has improved drastically over the last few years and its easier
and more accessible to find information on the internet.
P3:
P4:
Id agree they use it way more because everything is now online, all your homework
database answers and any revision you want to do is all online.
P5:
P6:
Definitely because, I suppose, 10 years ago. Theres a lot more online now and
technology is expanding every day. Theres more websites, faster internet. Since 10
years ago, theres a wider and bigger market as well.
P7:
Yeah, they definitely do. Everything is done online, you know, a lot of our library, all
the books are online, everything can be accessed through that. Typing is much faster
than writing an essay.
P8:
Yes I definitely think so, it has become a lot more popular for students.
P9:
Yes. Twitter and Facebook have become more popular in the last number of years.
P10:
Aw definitely, technology has advanced a lot from then and there is always something
new on the market.
P11:
Why? Ah yeah yeah, sure theres more technology now like every year theres
something new coming out.
P12:
P13:
Yes I would say advances in technology as well as more information online as well as
mobile phones being a lot cheaper to buy.
P14:
Yeah they definitely do as you see yourself in the last 10 year there has been a
massive increase, 10 years ago I never used it now I dont go a day without it, the first
thing I do every morning I look at my phone to see whats happening in the world.
P15:
P16:
P17:
Yes definitely it has now expanded and become more developed and easier access and
everything you do is online and contacting lecturers and you enrol online.
P18:
P19:
I think they do ah just because technology has evolved a lot more and its easier to
get your hands on these technologies such as laptop prices have gone down as well so.
P20:
Yes they do because theres lots more advances in technology it makes it easier.
P21:
P22:
Ah yeah of course, theres a more broader range of information online now of days
than there was ten years ago and theres a lot more easy access.
P23:
Am yeah I think they do because theres, am, more of a reliance on technology these
days.
P24:
P25:
P26:
Yes because technology has modernised and developed over the years and apps, and
better sources of technology.
P27:
Yes because its becoming easier and easier to use, with the likes of free apps.
P28:
More, because technology has become more and more part of our life.
P29:
Yeah, definitely. In the last 10 years students and lecturers have been more active on
the internet using technology as the basic grounds for things like first days and
weeks of college you're taught about such websites like Blackboard and Moodle and
things like that, and it's the basics to how students get most information and lecturers
post most information.
P30:
Yeah they do because it has got more advanced. It's easier to use and it has got
more popular as well.
P31:
Yeah they do. Students these days are always on social media sites group messages
sending notes and comparing answers through social media and accessing notes
through sites like Moodle or looking up tutorials on YouTube.
P32:
Oh way more, yes. Because it's so much more helpful and it makes things more
convenient.
P33:
Yeah, because they grew up with it and it's what they're used to. They don't know
how to talk without technology.
P34:
P35:
Yeah, I do. Definitely with using things like google or other search engines to find
out information on things for their projects.
P36:
Yeah I do, because say like 10 years ago probably would've used just books and
stuff, rather than online

You can use Google or Google Scholar to research about your project.
You can communicate with other students.
And there is file sharing online to help your assignments.
Like I was saying, there is a wider market for getting information, its not just
books.
You can go online, you can go on youTube and watch videos.
Theres a rake of different websites online.

Arranging events.
There is a lot of information available online and its efficient and is easy access kind
of everywhere.
P11:
Its easier for the teachers to get it out to students, its a lot better than giving loads of
paper out, its more compacts, and for students its a lot easier to submit stuff.
P12:
P13:
P14:
it makes the world a smaller place makes everyone aware of whats going on around
them; you can use the internet to help learn so much. There are great advantages in

P15:
P16:
P17:
3 advantages would be you can always stay in contact if you are not in college, if you
went away for the weekend you can submit assignments without having to be there
and you can email your lecturers.
P18:
P19:
3 advantages, am, its easier to study, am, subjects online because ah you dont have a
time limit over it, am, two, to keep in contact with other students in the class to see
whats going on and three, to ah keep in contact with lecturers over changes or if
youre having problems with something.
P20:
P21:
P22:
P23:
Am I think technology is used for study, am social networking and getting college
work done.
P24:
P25:
P26:
Yeah they can use it as research for projects, as referencing and for studying online.
P27:
P28:
To communicate would be one, to work, most work is done online now, and social
life.
P29:
Moodle would be one of them as they get most of their work and knowledge and
points from that for examinations and assignments. They could also use it for looking
up the tutorials on different websites like YouTube post How To videos and things
like that. And also talking with one another on Facebook group chats for assignments
and group projects are also very key as other people would have different classes and
wouldn't be able to meet face to face a lot of the time.
P30:
It's keeps everyone connected. You can ask people in your class questions easier, and
you have a lot of information in your phone and the internet.
P31:
Moodle is a big advantage for students because they can access all their notes
online, everything is online these days. They can look up tutorials on YouTube on
how to do certain things or how to answer certain questions, and social sites like
Facebook or Twitter have group messages where students can send notes to each
other.
P32:
It's quicker and easier to use, cheaper as well, the likes of Google Drive and all that
is free so you don't have to buy a usb which would cost about 15 in Curry's or any
shop like that. And I can't think of a third one off the top of my head.
P33:
They have a wider variety of notes online, and they can access tutorials through
YouTube. They can email their lecturers and get a response quicker than if they were
to wait and meet them in class.
P34:
A: They have a wider access of information, they can also get in contact with their
lecturers if they need to email them for anything and they can also get in contact with
other students if they are in a group assignment together.
P35:
3 advantages, it's always kind of available in the library and things like that.
Anything you want can be found in a matter of seconds on any type of subject. And
what else would there be, I suppose you can always chat to somebody online to find
out other information or you can email somebody to find out information.
P36:
It's handy for Moodle and notes and exam papers. It's handy for group work, as in
they can talk to their class mates and stuff, and it's handy to contact lecturers.

P1:
Students can become lazy and might not come into lectures if all the notes go up on
Moodle.
Taking away the fact that they actually have to go and do can do work and find
information.
A lot of the information wont be their own.
It can be distracting.
Sometimes theres not always internet available.
Being too dependent on it.
Dependence.
If youre not on social media its more difficult to study with others.
Time because we spend a lot of time on it.
P2:
P3:
P4:
P5:
P6:
P7:
P8:
Students become very dependable on technology when they probably shouldnt be.
The cost of technology like 3G and WiFi is very high.
The use of technology can also lead to things like cyber bullying.
Lots of cyberbullying.
WiFi isnt always available.
We become too reliable on it.
P9:
P10:
Its really distracting and time consuming and can be really unreliable at times.
P11:
It can be unreliable like computers shutting down and that; it affects your normal
writing people are starting to write in, yeah know, text language instead of normal
English.
P12:
Ah people get dependant on ah technology, its unhealthy because of less exercise and
its unhealthy.
P13:
People become distracted easier and its time consuming and unreliable sources online
for study. Well you can see it distracts a lot of
P14:
students you can see like at home study people go on YouTube start listening to music
or watching TV shows or even in class people pulling out there phones just going on
Facebook or different things its a distraction more than anything.
P15:
P16:
P17:
You maybe dont get the full affect and people get dependant on it, not everyone has
access, and its expensive.
P18:
Its expensive in a way, people become hooked and dont use books anymore and can
be slow sometimes.
P19:
P20:
Ah its a big distraction for a lot of people, it can be very time consuming and it can
be seen as anti-social.
P21:
P22:
P23:
Am procrastinating, it can be used for not getting your work done and bullying.
P24:
P25:
Am, its time consuming, its distracting and I cant think of anything else.
P26:
P27:
P28:
It's very expensive to start off, Some people get cut off, they don't participate any
more. And it can be very unreliable.
P29:
I think students can get very distracted as is a lot of temptation using technology as
it is so easy to go from one tab to the other on the internet and also if notifications
come up, you can lose track of where you are straight away.
P30:
It can be really distracting when you're studying. Sometimes it can get in the way of
your social life, sometimes you'll just go on your phone and not tall to other
people, and in class as well it can distract you, you can just go on your phone for the
whole class, and I think that's really distracting.
P31:
P32:
The security reasons would probably be the main one if you're using the likes of
Cloud Computing and hacking and using passwords as so on. Then you have the
likes of it breaking or crashing, and so forth, losing files and all that. And a third one
then would be distracting. I know a lot of students who use it for listening to
music while studying and it would be distracting.
P33:
It's not very reliable, it's very distracting and time consuming when they should be
studying and they're on Facebook
P34:
It can lead to cyber-bullying, students get very distracted from their school work, and
it can take up a lot of time.
P35:
P36:
Well, students have become very dependent on them, if the internet like in their
houses break down, they can't go online and get their notes and their exam papers and
can be distracting because you are online you might go browse other things such as
Facebook and shopping online and stuff.

How beneficial are social media sites, Facebook/Twitter, to students in terms of keeping
them all connected with their class mates with the likes of class pages and group chats?
P1:
Oh its very useful. Its hard not to know what some of them are up to.
P2:
I think they are very beneficial to a point, they can get distracting but its good to find
out notes that you may have missed from classes.
P3:
I think they are very beneficial. It is an easy way to communicate with each other.
P4:
There good because you can all agree to go into the library at one time to do a project
together and its an easy way to communicate with each other.
P5:
They help students because they are right now. It is easier to communicate and you
can see if someone is online so you can talk to the person and its faster.
P6:
I suppose that is definitely an advantage in a sort of a way because like I said, you can
keep in contact. Like if you miss a class or something, you can catch up. You can just
pop into the group chat to see what you missed, throw up the notes. So yeah, its
definitely a good option.
P7:
Yeah, they are really handy to stay in touch with your class, organise events. Get
advice on essays.
P8:
I think group chats and class pages are very useful for students as they can easily
communicate with each other and share information and get feedback.
P9:
P10:
Aw its great for keeping in contact with your class mates and planning events and
parties like.
P11:
Ah yeah, its very helpful like if you miss a lesson or any of that theres always lads
on Facebook in a group to help you out.-
P12:
Ah yes it is a great help as most people are on these sites or *emm* its easier to stay
in contact.
P13:
Aw they are very helpful for finding out change of lecture halls or looking for group
partners or really just finding out general information about the course.
P14:
Yeah there important but you can get away without them there handy for a lecture
wanted to let someone class was cancelled or something put it up on Facebook
because everyone be looking at their Facebook page.
P15:
P16:
P17:
P18:
Its excellent.
P19:
P20:
They can be very beneficial because you can get quick answers to problems from your
class mates.
P21:
Theyre handy because you can look at group handouts and project help.
P22:
Ah yeah it can be very helpful as most people are on them these days and if you miss
a lecture people can post on the page and tell you what youve missed.
P23:
I think there beneficial because it gives a network where people can get onto each
other very easy.
P24:
Really beneficial.
P25:
Very beneficial.
P26:
It can keep students up to date with their time table and if theres room changes and
things like that.
P27:
P28:
P29:
I think it's a massive advantage for students as they can easily transfer information
between each other in group chats and messages. Loads of people these days just
straight away make a group chat for projects and things like that, and it's so easy to
just send links and emails either, and on Twitter I suppose you can interact
immediately and get loads of opinions on information if you need to do
questionnaires.
P30:
We have a class page and it's really good, we can ask questions and people will
help you in any way they can so I think it's really beneficial.
P31:
It's very important because when you set up a group chat or group page, you know
who is in your class and you're getting to know them through social media, and again
you can send notes so you're always keeping up with messaging your friends and
classmates.
P32:
It is yeah, it's good on a social basis, getting to know students in your new class and it
good for keeping up to date on work, with what's the homework..? and so on. So it's
good on both a social and work basis.
P33:
It's handy so everyone gets to know what's happening. But also has a bad affect.
P34:
It's very beneficial because if you don't know about certain information for labs or
assignment, the majority of students will post it on the internet so on Facebook or
Twitter so you have a medium to go to and find out when your assignments are due or
if you an assignment.
P35:
Yeah, I think that's very important or very good because say for my class we have a
group page on Facebook, and any time a lecturer cancels a class or something
happens or somebody needs help for studying, they can put up a notification or
something on the page and everybody in the class can see it and they can comment
on it and get in contact with that person.
P36:
Their good for projects and group work, and coming up to exams and stuff they use
their Facebook pages for stuff like what might be coming up and tips and things.

Social:
How much do you feel modern technologies affect your social life?
P1:
Greatly.
P2:
Quiet significantly, Ive met a lot of friends over the internet. I have also stayed in
touch with friends over the summer.
P3:
A lot.
P4:
It has affected them in a negative way because people arent as good at talking now.
So when you want to go out socialising, people dont have the communication skills.
P5:
P6:
Definitely, every day. You know, like smart-phones and the way everything has gone
nowadays. You can do most things on your phone nowadays. So yeah, it definitely
affects your life.
P7:
A lot, I mean you can plan ahead, know when events are coming up and that sort of
thing.
P8:
I feel it affects my social life greatly as I can communicate with people easier.
P9:
Yes it would have an impact, your aware of events and parties and other social outings
that you may miss out on.
P10:
It affects it a lot.
P11:
It does a lot yeah its easier to meet people but at the same time it can be bad.
P12:
P13:
It affects it a lot.
P14:
Yeah I find a lot of people do instead of going to the pub and talk, people stay at home
and have a conversation online and its not the same.
P15:
A lot.
P16:
Not a lot.
P17:
I think it affects it quite a big deal because you dont actually have to communicate
with people you can just send a message.
P18:
A lot, I suppose.
P19:
Ah yeah they help my social life because you can go onto social media pages and see
how many people are going to an event lets say in a night club.
P20:
P21:
P22:
Ah a fair bit.
P23:
P24:
P25:
P26:
They would have a huge impact because they can determine how you organise what
youre doing socially for a night out or something.
P27:
It affects it a lot.
P28:
P29:
I think it has a good way and bad ways that it can affect your social life. I suppose
people can get too comfortable behind a screen and then when it comes to face to face
interactions they might find it more difficult and you might be more shy, whereas
actually in a good way you can stay connected with people that wouldn't be
home a lot and also stay connected when people do placements outside of college,
keeping at an advantage for yourself.
P30:
I think it has affected it in good ways because you can talk to anyone really just on
Facebook or Snapchat or whatever so I think it kind of connects all the students
whoever it is in your class, in your course or whatever.
P31:
It does affect my social life. It's very time consuming for me, I'm generally always on
it messaging or trying access notes or seeing what's happening.
P32:
It has a big control over my social life, I use social networks everyday in order to
contact my friends through Facebook, WhatsApp, all that etc.
P33:
It has affected it as in you wouldn't see anyone without a phone and they can't go out
and talk to people without having their phone on them.
P34:
It affects it greatly.

Would you rather meet up with a friend or just have a conversation online? Please
expand your answer.
P1:
Face to face, Id rather meet a friend. Its easier to have a conversation in person then
it would be online.
P2:
Face to face, Id rather meet a friend. Its easier to have a conversation in person then
it would be online.
P3:
P4:
Me personally, Id rather meet up with a friend because you can let the conversation
flow and ask more questions. Whereas online is very just one question and get an
answer, then second question get an answer.
P5:
P6:
It depends like, if I havent seen my friend in a long time, youd rather meet up in
person but if you meeting someone daily, its handier to text over the phone or you
know Whtsapp or Facebook.
P7:
Id rather meet up with a friend, its easier to talk about things and you know, yeah.
P8:
Id probably rather have conversations online as you can do it from the comfort of
your own home and its much quicker.
P9:
Id prefer to meet up with a friend because its more personal and you get to know the
person better.
P10:
P11:
P12:
Ah it depends how far away the friend was if he is a long distance away it would be
much easier to have a conversation on a device.
P13:
P14:
Yeah definitely rather meet up with a friend I find if you go to the likes of a pub and
have a pint with someone theyll loosen up and be more open with you whereas if you
written they will be more private with you.
P15:
P16:
P17:
P18:
I suppose Id rather meet up with a friend and have a face to face convo its more
effective.
P19:
P20:
Ah Id meet up with someone; its more social and more personal to me.
P21:
P22:
Id rather meet up with a friend; its a lot easier and more enjoyable.
P23:
P24:
P25:
P26:
P27:
P28:
I'd meet up with a friend, nearly all the time I meet up with a friend it's done by social
media.
P29:
I suppose it depends, because if you're in college then it's handy enough to just meet
face to face but if you're both at home and not living in the same place, online is
easier and you can talk more then
P30:
Definitely meet up with a friend, because it's better than just typing stuff out on
your phone, you're actually.. human to human conversation.
P31:
I would rather meet up with a friend. I prefer talking to someone in person, I just
prefer it.
P32:
Meet up with a friend. I like the human interaction out of it, face-to-face
conversation.
P33:
P34:
Meet up with a friend. Because it's easier to talk to someone when you're face-toface and you can actually do things with the other person.
P35:
I'd rather meet up with them. I feel it's more face-to-face, I find it kind of boring at
times talking through the internet, you can't really have that much craic with them.
P36:
I'd prefer to meet up with my friend, just because it's more appropriate than having a
conversation on the internet or something because you can't really talk properly as
opposed to meet them face-to-face.

Would you say you spend as much time actually having a conversation face to face
during your day as you would spend using modern technologies to communicate?
P1:
P2:
While in college that would be more face to face, spend less time on the internet
communicating with friends.
P3:
P4:
P5:
I think I spend as much time have a conversation face to face during the day, yeah.
P6:
Half and half Id have to say. Some people I talk more to by text rather than by person
and then vice-versa. It would be my closer friends that Id talk to in person more.
P7:
P8:
P9:
P10:
Ah face to face.
P11:
P12:
Ah it depends how far away the friend was if he is a long distance away it would be
much easier to have a conversation on a device.
P13:
Yeah.
P14:
Myself personally would be face to face as I dont use my mobile that often.
P15:
Yeah I do.
P16:
Yeah.
P17:
P18:
Sometimes yeah.
P19:
Ah Id spend more time having a conversation face to face because ah I dont know I
dont really talk to people that much online and its just easier to chat to them face to
face because they might not reply in time online where as if your face to face its boom
done.
P20:
P21:
Yeah.
P22:
P23:
P24:
No.
P25:
No.
P26:
Yeah.
P27:
Yes.
P28:
P29:
I'd say modern technologies because you're able to do stuff while you talk to the
person instead of just dedicating your time fully to them.
P30:
A lot more.
P31:
I would say I use modern technology more to communicate rather than face-to-face.
P32:
Conversation face-to-face, I'm in college most the day, and if I'm not in college, I'm
at work so there's a lot of interaction between friends and colleges, so it's face-to-face
conversation.
P33:
Definitely.
P34:
I would spend more time using technology to communicate because it's easier, more
efficient, it's easier. You have the comfort of talking to your friend without leaving
your house or leaving your room.
P35:
I'd say depending on the day but normally spend more time talking face-to-face.

Would you feel your social life would improve with or without the use of modern
technology? Please give a few lines to expand on this question
P1:
Definitely with, you get to know more of what is going on and that, but there are a
few arguments against it. Your social skills will decline, like having conversations
and structures of it.
P2:
Id say it would improve it. You might lose a few friends going abroad for jobs and
its just a good way to keep in touch.
P3:
P4:
It would and it wouldnt. It would in a way that you would be well able to talk to
people for a longer period of time, you would have better social skills and more to
talk about But, it would because people around, who are gone to Australia or England
or different counties, you wouldnt be able to get in contact with them as much
without the use of social media.
P5:
P6:
I suppose, yeah, it can and it cant. Im going to go with it can improve because I
suppose it could yeah. No actually Im going to have to change that, Im going to
disagree because sometimes you dont have technology and it can be beneficial
because you are meeting up in person rather than relying on the internet for contacting
people. Id rather meet them in person, to be honest.
P7:
It would improve with it because it is easier to stay in contact with people and plan
ahead.
P8:
I feel modern technology would help a lot with my social life because communication
is a lot easier.
P9:
No, I dont think my social life would improve. Modern technologies help us
communicate with each other and keep in touch with each other. If we dont talk, we
mightnt hear of events coming up and parties.
P10:
Probably with the use, it is very easy to keep in contact with my friends.
P11:
Eh there are advantages and disadvantages like you said it takes up a lot of time you
can get stuck in it. You might be having conversations online while you could be
having them face to face.
P12:
Ah it would definitely improve with my social life as I could arrange to meet up with
friends or etc...
P13:
My social life is improved with technology as I can keep in touch with friends.
P14:
Give and take like by using mobile devices you can talk to people in different areas
but as in saying that a lot of people use it as the opposite and stay at home.
P15:
P16:
P17:
With because I feel like a lot of my friends wouldnt be in the county so I can keep up
to date.
P18:
P19:
P20:
It would probably help with my social life its very easy to keep in contact with
people.
P21:
P22:
Well you can use it to arrange meet ups with friends and everything so Id say it
would, it would improve it because you can meet up, you can arrange to meet up.
P23:
P24:
P25:
P26:
Am my social life has improved because Im able to keep in contact by sending a free
message through Facebook instead of having to top up and get credit to contact them.
P27:
It has improved with it because I can keep in contact with my friends easier.
P28:
It would improve with it because I get to meet more people. If I met somebody at a
glance, I could text them or on Facebook.
P29:
With the use of technology. Say you made friends with someone on a night out and
didn't have technology with you, you'd find it hard to keep in touch. Whereas if you
did have modern technology, you'd be able to add them as a friend on Facebook and
then keep in touch and meet up more.
P30:
I don't think it would improve or dis-improve because you have social media to keep
connected and to keep talking to your friends wherever they are. Say they could be in
Dublin, it's really easy to talk to people everywhere and if you didn't have it you have
friends in college that you would be able to talk to more so there's no disadvantage or
advantage to it.
P31:
It would improve with modern technology It's easier to message people to meet up or
to see what's going on and then going out.
P32:
It would go down. I know it sounds a bit contradicting now that I say it but I do use
Facebook a lot. Maybe not just talking but to find out and to socialise.
P33:
With Because on a night out, you wouldn't be carrying around a piece of paper and a
biro, it would just be easier to put the details into your phone and contact them
through them.
P34:
It would probably with the use because you have greater access to meeting new
people online.
P35:
It would probably more without it because you get used to actually talking to people
and going out of your way always talking online. I think that might have a negative
effect on your personality and always being on the phone, instead of talking or
having a conversation with someone.
P36:
I feel my social life would improve without the use of technology as I have friends
who are very dependent on their phones so we would meet up and we can't have
discussions because their heads are stuck in their phones.

L1:
Students are constantly on their phones staying in contact with their friends. But also
then because of Moodle, we have all the notes online. Technology is very much part
of the classroom now today.
L2:
Well I suppose I could go into the fact that there is Moodle there students can go off
and have a look on Moodle if they miss a day and can communicate through
Facebook to ask what went on in a certain lecture if they were unsure of what was
going on at the time.
L3:
Ive noticed in the last 5/6 years that students are constantly on their phone in
lecturers which are quite annoying for lecturers.
L4:
Because they really are hugely connected to their phones, if you look around now,
nearly every second person is on the phone, and even though they're in a social
setting, in a caf, they're still connected electronically so your network is not
necessarily the person in front of you, or who you're talking to isn't the person in front
of you, it could be somebody you're emailing or you're sending a picture or you're
connected with somehow online.

Do you think students nowadays use these technologies more, in comparison to students
over the last 10 years? Why?
L1:
Yes I do think students use the technologies, I think they probably depend upon them
more and just because a lot of students now have access to this technology in their
hands with their apps and their smartphones.
L2:
I would definitely say they use it more every student has a laptop or a mobile smart
phone, the reason 10 years ago you wouldnt see that in class as the funds werent
there.
L3:
L4:
Yeah, because it didn't exist, the technology didn't exist so you had to talk to
people verbally where as now, smart phones have really changed the way we
connect.

I suppose the first one is it makes them work better together. They can use technology
if they are working in group a project, thats an advantage of technology for them.
They have access to most of their notes online. They also have access to e-journals
and e-books and libraries online.
They are also able to communicate with both their fellow teachers and students using
technology.
L2:
One advantage there would be if you missed a day you could always go and check
what went on in that certain lecture, the second advantage would be you can always
go over notes in the likes of Moodle, the third advantage there would probably be the
likes of communication again between groups and actually getting to know students in
there.
L3:
Its fast, reliable and its easy to communicate with each other with it.
L4:
It's fast, it's convenient, it's quiet colourful and interesting and stimulating, you
have videos you know, it' very interactive now.

L2:
Ok, I think students rely on technology. They go straight to google to look for
information as oppose to more traditional routes of books or journals. Thats a
disadvantage.
Another disadvantage is that they are constantly on their phones in class and feel the
fear of missing out, isnt that it. Phone-mo, so they forget that there is something
they are missing out on.
The other disadvantage is that they are very passive learners, knowing that the notes
are there for them whenever they need them, so there is no need for them to take
down the notes in class.
Three disadvantages I suppose, you would always see students with mobile phones in
the class, the second on would be students are not inclined to go to class and go over
the Moodle page instead of actually going in and know whats going on, I suppose the
third disadvantage would be students using their phones for not learning and
communicating between themselves.
L3:
L4:
Students are not communicating with person next to them. They it's hard to
know how much work a student is putting into something say from a study point of
view, and it's hard to measure their thought processes, how good are they at problem
solving, you know, how good are they at doing a sales pitch, how good are they you
know business skills that are really important, they're happening a little bit more in the
classroom. Not sure where technology stands with that as well, we kind of use some
technology but I would probably be a little bit old fashioned too and say you can't
beat the one-to-one interaction. A balance of both.

Do you think students require modern technologies to communicate with other people?
L1:
Well certainly they have become very dependable, so often times, yes they will be
probably communicating through technology without ever engaging with the people.
So yes, I do think that.
L2:
Definitely they would use modern technologies, theyre always texting each other or
twittering or on Facebook.
L3:
L4:
Well, to communicate you open your mouth and speak so communication happens all
the time. Do they require? They're used to it so therefore it's part of their lives, so
they use it a lot. Is it absolutely essential? I don't know. I mean it depends on who you
want to communicate with, I'm a great believer with communicating with who's
around you, with your classmates, your friends, you know, but it's great to
communicate with their families and friends at a distance so maybe a balance of both.

Do you think social media sites can makes students more self-conscious about
themselves?
L1:
Im not so sure what I think about students in terms of social media sites. I suppose in
terms of Facebook, there is that idea of getting likes for certain things and how people
feel about that. So I suppose that they are more self-concise, maybe how they look in
the pictures they post about themselves in their lifestyles, so yeah.
L2:
I would agree with that definitely as everyone is putting up selfies and people are
actually more conscious of how they look and comments on these social media sites.
L3:
Yeah.
L4:
I think maybe particularly second level more so than third level. I don't see it
happening as much. My daughter is in third level, see doesn't bother with Facebook as
much, at second level it dominated. It was this kind of a constant plague of what's
happening on Facebook?

How beneficial are social media sites (Facebook/Twitter) to students in terms of keeping
them all connected with their class mates with the likes of class pages and group chats?
L1:
Well I suppose from a lecturing point of view, I do know that the Facebook group is
very useful, but the only thing is that the lecturer doesnt have access to it. But it is a
means of communication that the class reps use to a good benefit of the students. I
dont know anything about Twitter though.
L2:
I think they are beneficial all the same yeah know, the likes of group chats for first
years gets them all chatting and also group chats in regarding college work you can
always have a look and chat and if you are, you know, sure of what is going on you
can ask the group chat and find outs whats going on.
L3:
I think its very handy because it tells a lot of students if there is lecturer absent and if
different things were told in different lectures.
L4:
I don't know because I'm a lecturer. That's a hard question, you'd probably need to put
that to students themselves, I don't. I presume it's very important. I don't see Twitter as
much.

What are your thoughts about students using phones, tablets or laptops for notes in
class?
a) Good
b) Bad
c) Undecided
Can you explain your answer for question one in a few short lines?
L1:
I think its bad because they are not engaging as they should be with me, the lecturer.
They are not listening to the lecturer and their minds are distracted.
L2:
I am undecided on that matter there is advantage you can go on Moodle and have a
look and whats going on but then you could be using it to look at games and all that.
L3:
Bad. Students get distracted with tablets using social media. At least with pen and
paper all they can do is write down notes.
L4:
I'm undecided. It can be very good because I have often said to you guys that if you
don't have the notes printed off, bring them up on your phones as long as that's what
the students are doing, but it can be distracting. Also I'm not sure about the laptop, I
notice when students are, like yourself, typing you're not connecting as much.
You're not interacting as much, so laptops I'm not sure about. Phones as long as
they're the notes.

Do you think that modern technologies effects students participation in class? And if so,
does it affect their grades?
L1:
Yes it can affect their work because I think they are not exploring all the options and
also they just go to the internet and Google they are often not pre reviewed, so they
are often quoting or using information that is out dated and has no clear reference in
academic.
L2:
I suppose I would both agree and disagree, it can affect participation if they are not
coming in because they are on Moodle, and I suppose it does affect participation as
they are on their phones and if you asked them at the end of the lecture they wouldnt
know what went on.
L3:
Yeah I seen a huge, since Facebook came out, Ive seen a huge dramatic drop in
grades. Students are very unfocused and are theyre losing their ability to spell.
L4:
Yeah. Can't measure that (effect on grades) that would be, I couldn't even put an
opinion on that, I don't know being honest. I think it would be very hard to measure
that.
