E-Business: Section 2 Analysed Data

Technical approach
Hello Miss/Mister. I am a student studying at G.M.I.T, and I'm currently investigating the impacts of
e-business on human relations and I hope to know more about your purchasing habits or to gain an
insight into press medias purchasing habits. I would also like to gain knowledge on your feelings of
advancements in technology and its effects on human relations in this modern society.
Can you help me by answering a few questions, it only takes a few minutes.

Sector of press media:

Behaviour consumer: about you
1. Do you buy books, newspapers or/and magazines online?

2. If yes, give three reasons:

P1: fast - delivery at home - same price than in store
P2: fast convenient - cheaper
P3: Easier - Bookstores wont often have what I need - Cheaper

3. If no, give three reasons:

P4: Time - Cheap -Straightaway
P5: Feeling of the book - Smell of the book - I like to get stuff by myself
P6: I dont read newspapers - I prefer buy magazines when I want, according my needs - For the
books, I like touching them
2
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P7: I dont read so much - The books I read are recommended by friends so borrowed - I cannot
purchase online because I dont have VISA card
P8: Love bookstores, the atmosphere - Talk to the staff to get help/advice - Nice to go to a bookstore
P9: I am too old - I am not enough skilful with manipulating the internet - I like touching paper
P10: Free - Dont like paying on the net - Like touching books

directly/in store for because:
P5: I like the feeling and the smell of the book. I also like getting stuff by myself.
P6: I like seeing and manipulate before purchasing. I dont think to be in the generation who buys
online, it is not spontaneous for me.
P1: I can touch the book and read the summary and just walk around the store and discover books.
P7: Because I like leafing through and see if it is the product I really need.
P8: I love go to bookstores because of the atmosphere and I like to get information about books from
members of staff. Besides, I find it nice to go to a bookstore. But sometimes I buy books online
because I have a E-book.
P2: You can feel it, look, read a little bit.
P9: Because I cannot manipulate the Internet enough.
P10: Because I like watching and touching the books.

By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

If online why,
P5: It is cheaper buying online I think.
P6: instantaneous, cheaper and faster
P1: it is a planned purchase
P7: you dont have to go outside
P8: Its nearly always available, you get every book in the online shop but when it is in a bookstore
they probably have to order it.
P2: fast, convenient and cheaper
P9: I think it is cheaper but in store I can leaf through and speak with the bookseller before
purchasing.
P10: It is fast; you can connect you on the internet even if it is late.

Your feelings about the trend of E-business

10. In your opinion, is it necessary to use E-business for an
author/publisher/newspaper company to survive on the current market?

If yes why,
P5: Every all the competitors are online so you have to use E-Business.
P6: It is an evidence that we have to move with our time and for the international aspect it is a plus
point to touch a big population in a few time is important!
P1: It makes the purchase easier for people and the author/publisher/newspaper company can become
known thanks to the ads.
P7: To launch everybody goes on the internet, if you post an ad on Facebook, everybody can see it.
P8: You cant avoid the internet time, you have to be up-to-dated nowadays and I think a lot of people
just check online if there is a bookshop nearby and so they cant avoid that and just have to be present
on the internet.
P2: So much is moving online so you have to. People are quite changing and buy more and more
online.
P9: Because most of people go into the internet for financial and time reasons.
P10: Because I think that there is a lot of people who go on the internet and who make only that.
P4: So many people have devices and books online are free.
7
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P3: Without an online store, most of customers would not take it seriously. You have to be on the
internet now and have a bookstore. Both are required!

11. What are your opinions towards the advancing of technologies in

general?
P1: It is good. We are more and more progressing and it is more and easier to obtain things like books.
P2: The influence of social media is huge, mobile technologies too. IPads, tablets, everybody wants
the last trend.
P3: It is exceeding and scary because we dont understand where it is going to go.
P4: Very good, everyone use it important +++
P5: I dont like it. Everything is impersonal.
P6: There are both positive and negative sides. Many surprises and questioning how it will be in 10
or 20 years if it goes as fast that it is now example: suicide because of information on Facebook.
Positive because advantages for informatics and work I can find articles easily
P7: It is our future; it has to advance like it does. But books disappear because of the internet and
more and more people wont purchase in store because all will be on the computers.
P8: Im a huge fan of being connected and when you travel around, its so easy to get in touch with
your family and friends. But sometimes I hate being connected all the time. There is a lot of benefits
but some disadvantages as well. And if you dont have all that technologies its difficult to get in touch
with you, you cant avoid that.
P9: It goes really fast but, unfortunately, technologies cancel the human contact all is virtual and not
enough real.
P10: It is good because I dont know sorry.

12. Do you think that shopping can be considered as an experience?

If yes why,
P5: You interact with people when you go shopping so thats a really good experience.
P6: We experiment, discover, manipulate, see people or even travel in a city very rich experience!
P1: We usually inquiry before doing it, it is something that we like and that we decide to concretise. It
is a considered act.
P7: It depends on whom youre doing your shopping. For example, if it is with a millionaire it could
be considered like an experience.
P8: It depends on what shopping but for example when you buy books and that you read it, it is a good
experience because you learn something. But if you shop because you are frustrated, thats a bad
experience.
P2: It appeals your sense. You look, you feel and then you make your choice.
P9: It makes human contacts easier.
P4: You go out, find something nice so you feel better and thats a good experience.
P3: People watch, you see a lot of people, different things that make you inspirited. I found my
favourite books in a shop so thats a good experience.

13. (If you shop online question only) When you shop online what device
would you normally use?

10
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

14. With the available devices do you think it has a positive or a negative
impact on your personal human relationships?

If positive why,
P6: Positive impact because it is an enriching evolution.
P4: Positive because that keeps people in contact.
P3: It has a positive impact because you can keep in touch with people. Its also very positive for
people who travel around.

Legend Q14 (Positive)

Enriching evolution
Keep people in contact/Travel

If negative why,
P5: It has a negative impact because there is no more communication, no more talk because of social
media especially.
P6: Negative impact if it is too much and that the virtual contact gets the upper hand on real relations.
Also regarding the professional aspect, some people lose their job because of selling online.
P1: No more contact/interaction with the sellers
P8: People dont focus on each other for example when I see people sit in a restaurant, every one of
them has their mobile phone in hands and dont focus on each other. I dont like that and thats why I
avoid that. I try to concentrate on people around me. You have to be very careful about that.
P2: I try to manage not being online too long because if you are online too long it is a danger.
P9: Because exactly people content themselves with virtual, dont speak anymore with the seller and
stay at home so with the available devices, people are cut off of the world.
P10: If people always go on the internet and dont go anymore outside, it has a negative impact.

11
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

Legend Q14 (Negative)

No more interaction/Communication/Virtual world/Contact
Danger for personal and professional aspects

If none of both why,

P7: It wont touch me. Actually Ive never thought about that before but in my life, it cannot have a
positive or negative impact.

Legend Q14 (none of both)

Not touched by available devices

15. Do you think the advance of E-business/online shopping impacts on the

human relationship?

If yes why,
P5: People dont go outside so negative impact on the human relationships.
P6: No more direct communication, verbal and nonverbal. All is done through a screen, keyboard, and
pictures. No more contact with the real life artificial.
P1: People send more time on their computer and go less to the shops so there are less and less
relations/interactions. People stay at home to order.
P8: You dont share anymore a good time with your partner or other people.
P2: People are not communicating, no discussion, and no feedback. For example, during a dinner,
everybodys connected and arent talking to each other.
P9: Because people will have less and less real relations.
P4: Less interaction
P3: People dont go outside and stay at home.

you dont do it, youll get crazy.

Dont buy food online

This shows the amount of active users who buy food online. As you can see 90% of the people dont
shop for food online. The one person who does shop online gives multiple reasons for doing so, like
lack of transport, cheaper than getting the bus and back, more convenient and easier.

Peoples main issue is that the food wont be as fresh and that its not convenient compared to
shopping in store themselves. Experience was also a key factor, as people liked going to the shop and
bumping into people. We had other reasons like the delivery charge, lack of trust in the employee not
picking the right food e.g. fruit and veg to their liking.
Me: Give three why you dont buy food online:
P1: Because the shop is right beside me. I dont think the food would be as fresh if I bought it online
and theres no point in paying for delivery
P2: Not convenient, I like to see what Im buying and read the sell-by-dates.
P3: I prefer going to the shop. I can look for offers better. And I dont like having to wait in for
shopping to be delivered.
P4: Easier to go to the local shop, you can see the product with it is and if its gone out of date, and
you go to the shop you can meet people and talk to them in store.
P5: The shop is close, ahm the delivery charge and freshness.
P6: N/A
P7: Ive never shopped online, its fresh in the store and I get to touch the product e.g. bread.
P8: I feel that its much handier to go into the shop, you can see physically what you want and I feel I
wouldnt trust buying food online like freshness and all that youd wana get it quick from the shop.
P9: Ah I enjoy walking to the shop, Im old fashioned and I like to smell the food before I buy it.
17
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P10: Personally I prefer to going for a stroll into the supermarket and have a browse around like and I
kinda find think buying food online I wouldnt get what I want.

Me: Give three reasons why you buy online?

P6: More convenient, just as cheap as I dont have a car and I can get it to work around my time
rather than go to the shop and come back which can take up like half itself.

Me: I see so how often a week would you shop online for food?

P2: You just asked that.
P3: I can see what Im buying. I can compare products and prices. And I enjoy walking around the

21
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

9. Why? (In your opinion is it necessary to use e-business, which is online shopping, for a
supermarket to survive in the current market?)

Reasons for supermarkets being active online and not active online

Competition
New Market Segment
Adapting To
Customers Needs
Preference
Location

This shows us two pie charts, one being all the reasons why a supermarket should be active and not
active online (left pie chart) and then the pie chart on the right (yellow and blue) is giving more
specific details as to why they dont need to be active online. Preference may be due to picking their
own food or just prefer going to the shop themselves for the experience.
Me: Why?
P1: Because people 2are going to go into the shop anyway, more people will be in the shop than
online. Maybe for old people but old people have young people to do the shopping for them so.
P2: People like to see and select their own food, they dont want a supermarket employee selecting
the food and sending it out to them.
P3: Because some people dont have time to go shopping, some people prefer to get it delivered
when then get home from work, some people might not be able to get out to the shop.
P4: Supermarket stores are very common and in all areas rural and urban.
P5: Because people like going shopping and they might not trust the buying online.
P6: Yes you got to stay ahead of your competition, and the likes of dunnes, aldi and lidi dont do
online shopping compared to super vaule and tesco. So super value and tesco are getting way more
customers than the likes of dunnes, aldi and lidi who arent online.
P7: To attractive different customers.
P8: I think it would be yeah... for most businesses because if youre not online I think that youre
failing because your competitors will be.
P9: Ehh because the larger supermarkets have done it and its in order to stay competitive you need to
do it in this day and age.
22
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P10: Well yeah Id say so, because now seems everyone is doing it like Tesco is always advertising
their online shopping and its quick to their door and stuff like this I think the likes of alid and lidi
need to up their game and kind of get with the program otherwise their going to fall behind.

P10: Yes.

13. Why? (Do you think shopping can be considered as an experience?)

Reasons as to why shopping is an experience

40%
60%

Social Experience

Outdoor Experience

Outdoor meaning leaving the house, whether its for a walk or drive, just getting out of the house for a
little while.
Me: Why?
P1: Depends what youre going shopping for, if its food shopping then its not really an experience
because you kind of have to [go shopping for food to survive], but if its clothes shopping then its an
experience.
P2: Well everything is an experience.
25
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P3: Because sometimes at least you get to meet people, it means you go out somewhere it might not
just be for the shop it might be for something social to meet a friend after. Sometimes it might take
you to different places you wouldnt normally go like different towns that might have a particular shop
that you might want to go to.
P4: Its very common, like, to go shopping every week and wouldnt see it as an experience.
P5: Because youre going out and you might meet people you havent met before.
P6: I do, when you go shopping you might bump into someone and chat away who you havent seen
for a month or two.
P7: Because I can leave the house.
P8: I think so yeah because lets say if its your local shop your interacting and seeing like ah seeing
people from around your area and like chatting to the people that work in the shop. It would be an
experience.
P9: Because if, like its a local shop and you walk in there you know the staff and itd be a good
experience for you.
P10: Oh definitely yeah, when I go shopping now theres always like meet someone you know or
something and you can have a quick chat with them and whatever you mightlike there the other
week I met up with my mate bumped into him in the supermarket havent seen him in years so if I did
my shopping online I wouldnt have met him so.

14. And when you shop online what device would you normally use?
Me: I see. And when you shop online what device would you normally use?

The green represents the positive aspects of technology, the red represents the negative aspects and the
blue can be both positive and negative.

Me: Why?
P1: Because you have Facebook, twitter and all them. Social media.
P2: I dont think neither, but I think if its used in moderation its positive. If its used none stop its
negative.
P3: I think it has, it can have both really because I think devices are anit-social but at the same time if
you use them to save time it will give you the opportunity to do things then that could be a benefit.
P4: On the negative side people are communicating less as theyre not going out to the local shop,
where they can meet up and talk to people. Its positive as its quick and easy to order stuff and get it
out to your house.
P5: Because its easier to contact people abroad and cheaper.
P6: I think it has positive, because some of my family and friends are abroad so you can just use

P7: Because I get to talk to people all over the world.

seeing people you could become slightly recluse. When it comes to that.

but it is online, but its not face-to-face so youre missing that personal touch.

The red represents why it doesnt impact on human relationship, and they said that we still get the
same level of interaction outside the shopping environment. 90% believe it impacts human
relationship as when buying online youre not physically present, and dont deal with anyone.

Me: And, why?

P1: Maybe in a good way you get to spend more time together with people with shopping online with
your friends instead of going into town on your own when your friends cant go, or at night. You can
shop online at night.
P2: Less face-to-face contact, less face-to-face interaction.
P3: Because people dont talk to each other as much anymore, you dont get the personal approach,
and personal contact with anyone sometimes an opinion is good in some shops like clothing or shoe
shops.
P4: Because people are staying inside and ordering online, instead of going out and communicating
with people.
P5: Because theres less human contact between customers.
P6: Yeah I do, because youre not really interacting with people or youre not walking around with
people your just sitting looking at a computer do youre online shopping and youre not getting any
personal touch and youre not getting any human contact or anything like that.
P7: Because shopping online doesnt include any human contact.
30
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P8: As I said their yeah, I think so because em if youre constantly doing all your shopping online as
youre doing with food I think your missing out on talking to the like cashiers in the shop and like
people you might know in the shop.
P9: Ahhm no because ah people still interact outside the shopping environment.
P10: Oh definitely I dont therell be a need for an actual shop in maybe ten years time, so everyone
will just go online and jump on their laptop and buy their food and then theres no human relationships
except their one with the computer.

Yes

No

Is it necessary to use e-business for a company to survive in the current market?

If yes, why
P1: Because more and more people don't have the time to move in shop, so companies have to
develop the E-business to don't lose money.
P2: In order to companies be famous or increase them popularities.
P3: Because everybody is more and more on internet which develop quickly. If competitors
companies develop their online shopping, it could have a negative impact on the sales of another
company which didn't do it. Beside, e-business is a way to increase sales without costs (e.g.
premises).
P4: Because it's something important, today people go online often in order to see the product
before, therefore companies will have more customers if they develop their E-business.
P5: Because the company will have more success if it use E-business in the world.
P6: Because you can see the product before
P7: We not say to survive but you can be more competitive.
P8: Now, Internet is really common for everybody, if the world change, business have to follow
this trend to survive.
P9: Because you need to think about your strategy and if you don't have E-business whereas others
competitors have it, you can have some problems in your business.
P10: Because new technologies become are bigger and bigger and a lot of people buy on internet,
so it would be a good idea to invest in E-business for a company.

11. What are your opinions on the advancement of technologies in general?
P1: Positive because it permits us to find any information thanks to internet.
P2: She is good because it permit us to facilitate our lives, everything is faster.
P3: I think that is practical because we have access to the information quickly and we can also find
all information that we want. Nevertheless, it could be negative for the human because we are
alone behind a screen.
P4: I'm in favour of the advancement of technologies because I like it and that facilitate the life.
P5: It's good, sometimes there are advantages and disadvantages.
P6: It's very good.
P7: The advancement of technologies is good, but we have to be attention by the way that we use
it.
P8: It's good because it can solve a lot of issues that we have now a days, but we have to know
how to use it and not spend a lot of time in the front of a computer and forget the people.
P9: I like to think that the new technologies are here to facilitate our life but you have to be careful
if you use too much it.
P10: It's good.

12. Do you think that shopping can be considered as an experience?

If yes why,
P1: Because we realize our idea when we are in the shop: purchase.
39
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P2: Because it's something that everybody would like to do in general.

P3: Because today, the shops make more and more efforts in order to a person want to buy
(merchandising).
P5: When you buy something many times, you would be professional with this.
P6: Because you meet a lot of people and sometimes the staff in the shop where you go, reflect
your experience and you can come back or not a next time because of this good or bad experience.
P10: Because you can see new things, like a new experience when you try clothes on...

If no why,
P4: Because it's common and regular.
P7: Because it's reality.

2.5

7.5

Positive

Negative

If positive why,
P1: Because it permit us to keep contact with my friends and my family, nevertheless the
excessive utilisation could have a negative impact on our personal human relationships.
P2: Because computer hasn't negative impact on my personal relations.
P4: That hasn't negative impact on my relationships because that don't avoid me to be outgoing.
P5: I can communicate easier with my family and my friend.
P8: For me it's positive but in general it depends. When you know how to use computer and you
don't spend too many time, it's good. But if it's too much, it could become bad for human
relationships.
P9: Because technologies help to be connected with my friends and my family who are are far of
me, it's easy to communicate with them. It could be negative, if I use this device too much.
P10: Because I have a social life.

much time (negative)
If negative why,
P3: To a certain extent, that avoid me to do something with my friends and my family but I don't
do it often so that isn't a big impact on myself.
P6: Probably negative because you are not talking with anybody and you can't ask some questions.
If both why,
P7: It's really positive thing in general but we need to be more educated that the way when have to
use it. I think it's a good stuff but we don't know how to use it.

Do you think the advance of E-business/online shopping impacts on the human relationship

Yes

No

If yes why,

43
By: David, Laura, Lise and Tom.

P1: Because of this, people don't speak to each other anymore and isolate yourself behind an
computer.
P2: I think that could have an impact on some persons if they would spend too much time to
search "good deal" on the web and therefore would isolate themselves.
P3: Because without moving exclude ourself of the society. For the companies, the advance of Ebusiness can cut jobs. If everything would become E-business, the shopping will not an
experience.
P6: For the same reasons at the top.
P7: That's good because you can shop with your friend behind your computer but you should go
shopping in real life with your friends, it's more social than computer.
P8: Because people go less in real life shopping, to buy things by themselves, maybe.
P9: Because shopping online avoid people to communicate with others outside whereas when you
go shopping in the real life you can do it.
P10: Because more people will be use internet and laptop more often.

Legend Q15
Anti-social behaviour

If no why,
P4: Apart from we aren't in relation with someone when we buy, I don't think that will be bad.

between online shopping and real life.
