Goal-Setting and Decision Making

Unit Title: Goal-Setting and Decision Making


Synopsis (Focus, grade/subject, timeline, rationale)

Culminating Activity/Products.

CALM students will use the unit to look into how to set effective, S.M.A.R.T.
goals for their lives, as well as how to make informed, well-balanced
decisions in many different aspects of their lives. The unit will take 2.5
weeks (approx. 12 lessons). The ability to effective plan goals and make
decisions to reach those goals, while simultaneously overcoming obstacles,
is a necessary life skill, and applies to every other aspect of the CALM
course.

Students will create a vision board reflecting one of their long-term goals in
their life. This will require them to research decisions that will need to be made,
and plan S.M.A.R.T. goals which will help them achieve what they seek. The
vision boards will be created physically on poster board: using computer printouts, magazine cut-outs, written words, drawings, etc. It will be used as
inspiration to achieve their goal.

Students will be presented with new ideas and scenarios which will require
discussion, both with the class and in small groups. Participation in these
discussions (and presence in the class) is used to foster necessary life skills and
professionalism that will then extend into their future careers.

October Sky

Students will fill out a formative pre-movie questionnaire about their current
views decision making and goal setting. They will then view the movie, and
respond to several reflection questions afterward. This will include a reassessment of their pre-movie thoughts and ideas.
