Thematic Area(s): Creativity

GUIDELINES
1. Proposal submission timeline: Proposals should be submitted at least one month prior to the expected
start date of the experience. International experiences require at least two months notice. Contact your
honors advisor immediately for any exceptions.
2. Proposal length: While the quality of the proposal is most important, strong proposals are typically 3-4
pages single-spaced.
3. Proposal format: Please maintain the proposal format (e.g. headers, layout)
4. Time commitment: Experiences should consist of at least 75-90 hours of preparation, execution, and
reflection. This is approximately equivalent to the commitment of honors seminars and pre-approved
experiences.
1. Abstract
Briefly describe the experience. What makes this experience personally meaningful? What goals do you have for this
experience? What is your timeline for this experience?
*If you are proposing an international experience, provide an itinerary.
**If you are developing this experience from an existing opportunity (class with a study tour, campus organization, co-op,
etc.) that is not already an honors seminar or pre-approved experience, how will you differentiate your experience from
what is already required of other students?
For this honors experience, I would like to choreograph a swing dance. Swing dancing is a hobby I have recently picked
up. I have learned a lot from weekly lessons over the last semester, styles such as East Coast, Lindy Hop, Blues,
Charleston, and the Shim Sham. However, for all Ive learned, I am still a beginner. I would like to choreograph a swing
dance because it would be a good opportunity to learn the different skill sets of dance. Fitting the move to the mood of the
music is one of those skills. Another would be learning how to pace moves based on stamina, to keep the dancers from
becoming too tired to dance. I plan on incorporating as much as I have learned while still having the dance make sense.
This experience would be personally meaningful to me because it would give me a way to enhance music. I love music
and the emotion it brings with it and any opportunity to enhance it I take, be it by harmonizing along with the radio or
dancing. Choreographing a swing dance would be the perfect way to enhance a piece of music in a lasting and replicable
manner. My goal for this is to choreograph a routine that fits well with the music. I will write out the steps so that
someone would be able to replicate it, as well as film myself and a partner dancing it for reference.
My timeline for this project is below:
Week 1: Pick out a song and determine what style(s) of swing dance would fit it (and which parts they would fit if
multiple styles). Run this by advisor and see what advice they have for different sections of the song.
Week 2: Choreograph first section of song (introduction/first verse/wherever the music changes notably) and learn it by
practicing. Run this by advisor so they can check technique and if the choreography runs smoothly.
Week 3: Choreograph second section of song (first verse/second verse/wherever the music changes notably) and learn it
by practicing. Run this by advisor so they can check technique and if the choreography runs smoothly.
Week 4: Choreograph third section section of song (second verse/third verse/wherever the music changes notably to the
end) and learn it by practicing. Run this by advisor so they can check technique and if the choreography runs smoothly.
Week 5: Finish/finalize choreography and make sure it is all learned and can be performed well. Run this by advisor so
they can check technique and if the choreography runs smoothly.
Week 6: Film finished product. Run the video by advisor to see if they would change anything about how it was shot.

Identify an experience advisor and provide their contact information. Explain why you chose this person and how you
plan to utilize your advisor for this experience.
Note: Advisor(s) should have knowledge or expertise in an area related to the experience. Honors advisors, undergraduate
students, and family members cannot be experience advisors.

I chose this advisor because, out of our group of dancers in the UC Hepcats (swing dance club), Bryan is the most
experienced. He is also a graduate student, so he is eligible to be an advisor. I believe Bryan could offer the most advice
when it comes to the experience as he has helped me with multiple techniques before. He is truly the best choice for
advisor.

5. On-going Reflection
The on-going reflection should help you process the experience and progress toward your chosen learning outcomes.
Describe your method for reflecting throughout the experience. Indicate specific reflection questions/topics you plan to
use to guide your reflective process.
Note: A variety of methods can be used for on-going reflection. Some examples are videos, drawings, blogs, songs, and
journals. Reflection topics to consider include your ideas/insights about the experience, connection to other areas of
involvement, and your progress towards the learning outcomes.
Once a week, I plan on filming myself explaining what I did that week on the project. I will reflect on things like how I
have been challenged that week and what surprised me while putting the choreography. If things have gone badly, I will
reflect on those and if things have gone well then I will reflect on those.

Describe how you plan to actively share what youve taken away from this experience with a targeted audience. Explain
why you chose this specific audience.
Note: While social media can be an effective platform for sharing, only posting on your personal learning portfolio or
social media account(s) does not reach a targeted audience.
I will share what I learned by performing the routine live with a partner for the Hepcats (UC swing dancing club). I will
then talk about my process for choreography and accept any questions they have. This audience would be the best suited
for sharing my learning as they are all swing dancers and would thus be interested in my project. I also plan on filming
myself and my partner putting on the routine to have a hard copy for myself and to maybe post on youtube to share it with
any people potentially interested in swing.
