6th Grade Unit 2: Fractions, Decimals & Percents

Prerequisite Skills:
Place value
Addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals
Multiplication and division of whole numbers
Identifying factors of whole numbers
Identifying multiples of whole numbers
Identifying important information in a word problem
UNIT OVERVIEW: In this unit students will work with fractions, decimals and percentages. Students
will be asked to compare and order numbers from smallest to biggest, or biggest to smallest when in
fraction or decimal form. Students will be asked to use their knowledge of multiplication and division
to convert numbers from fraction form to decimal form or percent form. Students will learn how to
determine an amount from a given percentage, and then find a missing percentage from a given set
of whole numbers. Students will also be asked to determine a unit rate. Students will have to apply
this to real world situations including, but not limited to, determining the best deal, finding a quicker
pace, determine sale prices from a percent discount and determine a total whole number amount
from a percentage.

Learning Target 1: I can compare and order integers.

6.NS.5,
6.NS.6a, 6.NS.7,
6.NS.7a, 6.NS.7b, 6.NS.7c,
6.NS.7d
Example
| 7 | = 7 because 7 is 7 spots away from 0 on a
number line
| -7 | = 7 because -7 is 7 spots away from 0 on a
number line
Order -9, 5, 6, -8, -6, 3 from least to greatest
-9, -8, -6, 3, 5, 6
The greater the absolute value of a positive
integer, the larger the integer
The greater the absolute value of a negative
integer, the smaller the integer

A) Identify the absolute value of an integer

as the integers distance from 0

B) Order a set of integers from largest to

smallest or smallest to largest and apply
this information to real world situations

Learning Target 2: I can compare and order decimals.

6.NS.7b

6.NS.5, 6.NS.6a,
Example

5.01 < 5.1

0.75 > 0.7
Chris earned the following amounts babysitting:
$9.05, $10.00, $10.70, $10.07, $9.50
Order them from least to greatest
9.05, 9.50, 10.00, 10.07, 10.70

A) Determine which of two given decimals

is greater or smaller using < or >
B) Order a set of decimals from largest to
smallest or smallest to largest and apply
this information to real world situations

Learning Target 3: I can compare and order fractions.

6.NS.7b

6.NS.5, 6.NS.6a,
Example

A) Determine which of two given fractions

is greater or smaller by finding a common
denominator and then using < or >

/2 > /3 because the common denominator would be

6, so you change each fraction and 3/6 > 2/6

6th Grade Unit 2: Fractions, Decimals & Percents

B) Order a set of fractions from largest to
smallest or smallest to largest and apply
this information to real world situations

Four bags of candy weigh the following:

/5 oz., 1/2 oz., 5/8 oz., 3/4 oz. Order them from
greatest to least.

/5 = 16/40, 1/2 = 20/40, 5/8 = 25/40, 3/4 = 30/40

3
/4, 5/8, 1/2, 2/5

Learning Target 4: I can convert between fractions and decimals.

6.NS.7b
Example
A) Utilize division to convert a fraction to a
decimal
B) Understand place value to correctly
create a fraction from a decimal and then
simplify the fraction if necessary

/2 = 0.5 because 1 2 = 0.5

0.5 = 1/2 because the 5 is in the tenths place so 0.5

because 5/10 and 5 and 10 can both be divided by 2
to equal 1/2

Learning Target 5: I can find and use a unit rate.

6.RP.2a

6.RP.1a,
Example

A) Determine a unit rate using division or a

proportion

B) Answer real world application problems

involving unit rate.

10 ounces cost $2.50, what is the cost per ounce?

0.25
10 2.50
$0.25/ounce

Examples:

10 = 1
2.5 x
10x = 2.5
10 10
x = $0.25/ounce
Price per item
Miles per hour
Miles per gallon
Minutes per mile

Learning Target 6: I can find the percent of a whole number.

6.RP.3a
Example
A) Determine the percent of a given
number through multiplication or decimals
or using a proportion

B) Answer real world percent word

problems

20% of 50
20% = 0.2
50 x 0.2 = 10

Examples:

6.RP.3,

20 = x
100 = 50
20 x 50 = 1000
1000 100 = 10
x = 10

Percent discount, sale price

Adding tax
Adding a tip

Learning Target 7: I can find the percent given the part and a whole.
6.RP.3,
6.RP.3a

6th Grade Unit 2: Fractions, Decimals & Percents

Example
A) Determine a missing percent from a
given a fraction using division and
multiplication or a proportion
B) Answer real world percent word
problems

/5 is equal to what

2 = x
5 100
2 x 100 = 200
200 5 = 40 = 40%

percent?
2 5 = 0.4
.4 x 100 = 40%
Examples:
Using a given discount to find the % discount
Determining a percentage completed

6th Grade Unit 2: Fractions, Decimals & Percents

Learning Target 8: I can find the whole amount given the percent and the
part. 6.RP.3
6.RP.3a
Example
2 = 40
x 100
2 x 100 = 200
200 40 = 5

A) Determine a missing total amount from

a given piece of the whole and the
respective percent that it represents using
division and multiplication or a proportion
Example:

B) Answer real world percent word

problems

Determining an original price

Learning Target 9: I can convert between fractions, decimals, and percents.

6.NS.7b
Example
A) Use multiplication and division to
convert a given number in any form into
any of the other forms

B) Understand that fractions, decimals

and percents all represent part of a whole
C) Apply this knowledge to real world word
problems

/2 = 0.5

because 1 2 =
0.5

0.5 = 1/2
because the 5
is in the tenths
place, 5/10
then, you can
divide
numerator and
denominator by
5 and 5/10 = 1/2

/2 = 50%

because 1 2 =
0.5, and then
0.5 x 100 =
50%

Examples:
Comparing amounts presented in different
forms
Ordering given amounts presented in
different forms
