9, GRAMMAR Grammar must be part of the total language programme and having separate periods in the timetable for “grammar” is a practice which is highly deplorable. Research has shown that the old fashioned formal teaching of grammar had a negligible or even harmful effect on the language development and produced "knowledgeable non-communicators". However, for children not to be taught anything about language is seriously to their disadvantage. Pupils need to have their attention drawn to what they are doing and why they are doing it, because this is helpful in the development of their language ability. ‘As with all other language activities, there must be a firm oral foundation at first. Children love to imitate and mime. Therefore, in the early stages the teacher should make use of carefully planned activities such as ‘games, songs and-short dialogues which lend themselves to imitation and repetition, Action songs,
