1. Update on meeting with the Provost and various deans of the
different colleges
Lead by: Dr. Turner
o (Dr. Hulsey met with provost, actually)
Dr. Hulsey and Dr. Turner met with deans at the beginning of semester.
Dr. Hulsey and Dr. Turner were surprised how much lack of
information/misinformation is out there about HSP.
o In particular deans were surprised at research stipend
o Dr. Parang (with engineering) offered to help engineering
students prepare their proposal
1. Very helpful when you can get as many eyes on a
proposal
Will continue to meet with deans each semester
2. Details on the internship requirements
Lead by: Louis Varriano
o Does it have to be service internship or professional? Paid or
unpaid?
Dr. Turner:
o Title: Service Learning Project and Internship
o Dont have a preference on route you take
o The program does ask that it is the kind of internship that will
benefit you (not just making copies).
o Whether or not it can be paid have not come down on one
side or the other
At some point we may decide its not appropriate to get
paid, so dont be surprised if that changes
3. Plans for next years retreat
Lead by: Louis Varriano
November 4-6: weekend of Tennessee Tech game
o Louis: suggests not having leadership training that we had this
year
o Alex is looking into things from UT Extension

o Dr. Turner urges all to keep an open mind and think about what
pieces of it you can pull out and find useful
o Looking for ways to engage senior class in upcoming retreats
4. Information session for Scotland
Lead by: Cody Sain
o Sophomores are confused at the process finding an advisor
for Scotland
o Do they need to contact someone or give Dr. Turner a list of
names?
Dr. Turner: Scotland is an ongoing process
o Initially wanted to pair with the University of Edinburgh
o Every year HSP contacts them to get assistance to lead the
course
o Getting headway HSP has asked them to work with pairing
students with tutors in Edinburgh
o Proposal on the table for them to provide faculty, lecturers, as
well as tutors
o Still in wait and see stage
o Typically students can make suggestions for specific faculty by
going on website for University of Edinburgh dont always get
who we would like due to availability
5. Thesis process advice and instruction
Lead by: Cody Sain
o Confusion about what scholars need to be doing now in order to
prepare
o Timeline: Is there a certain point sophomores should be at by
the end of this year?
Dr. Turner:
o There is a timeline in a handbook.
o Suggests meeting with cohort to answer questions as they come
up
Craig:
o Once a proposal is submitted, what is timeline for a response for
research funding?
Dr. Turner:
o Once a proposal is submitted Dr. Turner reads it passes it
off to Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships
o Get proposals in immediately to give yourself as much time as
possible
o It is okay for students to email and ask where they are in the
process Reach out!
6. The new HSP curriculum
Lead by: Mike Lidwin
o First year cohort is interested in meeting with Dr. Turner to
discuss what we like about curriculum and what we wish we
could improve on for future classes
Dr. Turner:
o first place to start is with Dr. Cantin about expectations in course
to help her for next year

Process for new curriculum

o When old director was here, there were plans to look at HSP
1. Provide infrastructure
2. Dr. Hulsey came and was charged with submitting
strategic plan for HSP and CHP. This is when the idea of
pulling the two programs apart came about.
3. Originally Dr. T. proposed 44 credit hour program
narrowed it and business school in particular expressed
how when we pushed our curriculum back, their students
cant be Global Leadership Scholars (need second
semester sophomore year)
a. Now business majors can be apart of GLS
Craig sometimes some come in and have questions on redundancy
of what courses cover
o Dr. Turner: still meets the same Gen Ed requirements as before
7. Transparency with scholarship coverage
Lead by: Mike Lidwin
Can Dr. Tim Woods come speak to cohort about what our base amount
is?
o Dr. Turner: Isnt really a base amount for each scholar (amount
varies based on given scholarship) not necessarily a full-ride
Craig: some seniors may be losing Hope scholarship
Dr. Turner: Hope Scholarship policy change
o May be more worthwhile for Woods to describe Hope
Scholarship
o Will plan to have him speak to HSP about Hope Scholarship and
clear up policy confusions
Offer tuition and fees for four years (average cost of housing Brown
is above average)
o Books have never been covered two things happened
1. If you get a refund check: you can use it to pay for books
2. When we were given technology stipend if you have
money from the $1500 stipend, you can use the
difference to buy books
a. 1500 for computer and support (printer, cartridges,
etc.)
b. Programmatically we do not cover books
Part of discussion is to increase funding to cover housing
Next year we have pulled away from Honors LLC and will have a
separate Haslam LLC
Michael anyway to look into an upper classmen LLC and reserve
spots in Volunteer?
o Should talk to housing because current policy with dorms being
torn down each year is a huge disadvantage to anyone with
supposed priority housing because they become second in line
Dr. Turner: speak to Housing in terms for priority housing. Field for
those interested in upper year housing LLC and we can definitely look
into it

o Colleen mentioned existing precedent for athletes/honors in Vol

Hall although housing made it clear that following year would
not be the case
8. Feedback from handbook
Lead By: Dr. Turner
Gotten positive feedback
Questions:
o About FERPA when sharing info with students about not
meeting community standards
o Note that representative will be kept informed about otherswe
can change it to have list just say if students have less than a
certain number of hours
1. This way representatives wont be privileged to if
someone is necessarily on probation or in jeopardy of
leaving program
o About Review Board:
1. Make sure you are sending out emails and keeping cohort
members informed
2. Are our meetings open to everyone?
a. Initial response no, it shouldnt need to be
b. If they have issues beyond that they can come talk
to Dr. T
c. Last years seniors had two representatives
because two seniors had worked on the structure of
the review board and both wanted to contribute
d. Upper years concerned that people who were most
vocal were elected and not necessarily best
representative
Libby maybe she should coordinate the google poll for each cohort.
o Should we hold elections each semester?
Craig if meetings arent open should have a set procedure for
elections
Louis cohorts should be able to elect on their own
Cody each cohort knows their own cohort the best and set
procedures may not be applicable to all years
9. Consequences for not meeting requirements
Lead By: Dr. Turner
Follow-Up Questions:
o Dr. Turner is wondering if the community standards section is
capturing everybody.
o What if you have a first year who uses all of their funding? What
becomes the consequence if they decide to stop attending
lectures/service?
o Scholarships there is talk about if you are no longer in
program, you may not receive other financial things (like Peyton
Manning Scholarship which is only given to HSP, but isnt
necessarily tied with HSP)
Lectures:

o Seem to be the same time for a lot of lectures if they conflict

with a time, they conflict with everything
o Global Awareness lectures offer a different time that varies
o Can we get schedule of lectures prior to week of?
