SA Response #6: Assessment

The formative assessment component of the Project Based Learning assignment is
the Venn diagram activity that the 12th grade students will complete during the Inquiry
Based Lesson. The Venn diagram is considered a graphic organizer, and will help
students visualize the information they are synthesizing for the lesson and meet the
standards and objectives, as they are incorporated into the lesson and project. As students
compare and contrast while drafting the Venn diagram, the teacher would have an
observable way to measure and confirm learning that has taken place throughout the
lesson.
The final draft of the project essay will serve as the students summative
assessment tool. This essay is a 5 page research-based paper that allows students to
demonstrate what they have learned through applied critical thinking. The essay requires
students to correlate a 19th century social issue from a text we have studied and compare
it to a modern day problem that we face in our culture. The students use analytical skills
to formulate both a thesis and postulate a solution that will show that the students possess
a mastery of the subject matter learned throughout the yearlong unit.
Finally, students will complete a Self Reflection journal entry to evaluate their
own understanding as it relates to them in a real world setting. The Self Reflection will be

an informal journal entry that allows students to write freely about what they have
learned, what their opinion is of the topics researched, and how they think the problem
faced in modern society can be improved or solved. This assessment will allow the
teacher to compare how the students self reflections measure against the project
assignment rubric, and the standards and objectives indicated within the unit.
