Lesson Plan Format

Grade: 8th

Content and Standards: Persuasive Speeches


4B. Students who meet the standard can speak effectively using language appropriate to the
situation and audience.
5B. Students who meet the standard can analyze and evaluate information acquired from various
sources.
5C. Students who meet the standard can apply acquired information, concepts and ideas to
communicate in a variety of formats.
Prerequisites: Students must have background knowledge of what makes an effective speech.
Students must have knowledge of how to persuade someone. Students must be able to locate and
organize important information. Students must have some background knowledge of Propaganda
and past US Presidents.
Essential Questions: What makes a good persuasive speech? What components need to be
included in order to be effective? How can the use of propaganda help with the persuasion?
Whats the difference between truth and propaganda?
Instructional Objective: Students will understand what a good persuasive speech looks like.
Students will understand how a persuasive speech is different from an informative speech.
Students will create their own persuasive speech. Students will be able to use an outline to help
with the organization of their persuasive speech. Students will understand the term propaganda
and be able to use propaganda techniques in their speech.
Instructional Procedures:
1. 10 Minute Grammar: Capitalization
2. Begin to Look at Propaganda Techniques Worksheet in Persuasive Speech Packet
3. Go over Propaganda Techniques Worksheet with the Class
4. Show real life examples of each Propaganda Technique (Visual Aids)
5. Delivering A Speech Notes
6. Smartboard to complete Notes/Students Fill out Notes in Packet
7. Computer Lab for Research/Class Work
8. Students Begin to Fill out Putting it all Together Page

9. Students Begin to Write Speech


Materials/Equipment: Persuasive Speech Packet, SmartBoard, Computer Lab, Propaganda
Techniques and Delivering a Speech Worksheets. Propaganda Visual Aids
Assessment/Evaluation: Class Discussion and Feedback will determine student understanding
of Different Propaganda Techniques. Student application of Propaganda Techniques in their
speech will assess knowledge and proper use.
Differentiation: Students will choose which propaganda technique they want to use in their
paper/speech.
Individualized Activities: Delivering a Speech Notes must be completed in class. Students
will begin filling out Putting it all Together worksheet
Technology: SmartBoard for Notes, Visual Aids, Computer Lab/Device for Research
Self-Assessment: Students will be introduced to a new term today in class, propaganda. In
order to ensure that students understand this new term, each student will need to choose a
propaganda technique to use in their paper. If students use propaganda techniques correctly in
their speech then this initial lesson will be viewed as successful.
