Explain what a firewall is and why it is necessary.

A firewall is a software program or hardware device that intercepts
communications between your computer and the outside network and does
some processing on them to help block malicious connections.
Firewalls aren't absolutely necessary, but quite recommended. There are
thousands of sources on the internet for malicious activity, they'll scan the
network you're connected to and try to take your PC over for a variety of
reasons
