S3.A.2.1.1: Generate questions about objects,
organisms, or events that can be answered through
scientific investigations.

Formal Evaluation
Through the inquiry-based lesson, students will be
observed during the experiment and completion of the
assigned worksheet that demonstrates their knowledge
of the scientific method.
Informal Evaluation
Students will be given a short quiz at the end of the
week that reviews the steps of the scientific method, in
the correct order.
Objective:
During independent work and discussion (C), all third
grade students (A) will identify (B) the stages of the
scientific method during the experiment assigned (D).
Blooms Taxonomy:
Level 3 Application: Solving problems by using
acquired knowledge, facts, techniques and rules in a
different way.
Level 4 Analysis: Examining and breaking information
into parts by identifying motives or causes; making
inferences and finding evident to support
generalizations.
Webbs Depth of Knowledge:
Level 2 Working with skills and concepts

Big Idea Statement

Understand the process of the scientific method by
completing an in-class experiment.
Essential Questions
Why do we make a prediction?
What do you see when you are observing?
Was your prediction correct?
What did you learn from the experiment?
Key Vocabulary
Scientific method
Observation
Hypothesis
Experiment
Density
Prediction
Pre-Assessment of Students
Engage the students by presenting a YouTube video that
explains the steps of the scientific method
I will have posters with the words and title of each step
of the process and they will be placed on the board after
reviewing from the video shown.
After the steps have been placed on the board, I will
then place an explanation of each step.
[This will stay on the board for students to reference
throughout the class]
Transition
Supplies and materials will be passed out to each
student as well as the appropriate worksheet that is to
be completed.
Please clear everything off your desk before we start
the experiment.
Instructions will be given to the students before starting
the experiment
- Vegetable oil will be premeasured for each student
- A line will be marked on each bottle for the amount of
water that is to be poured.
- Since we will be working with Alka-Seltzer (fizzy
tablets), I will drop the appropriate amount needed
when the student has completed the necessary steps
- Food coloring will be provided
Providing the Independent Practice
Go over the steps and instructions with the class, which

will be present on the worksheet that will be provided.

Have the students do the experiment step-by-step as
instructed on the worksheet
Once the students have reached a certain point after
adding food coloring to their bottles, I will drop AlkaSeltzer (fizzy tablets) in their bottles for the final
reaction.
The students must record their observations,
predictions, hypothesis, and conclusion on the
worksheet that is given to them
Once all students have completed their experiments, we
will review our final conclusions as a class.
I will talk about the density of water and oil briefly after
the experiment.
Adaptations/Accommodations for Students with Special Needs
Exceptionality: Aspergers Syndrome
Accommodations:
Use visual organizers for daily routine
Prepare student for change in routine and transition
When presenting multi-step directions, pause between
instructions to check for comprehension
Adaptations:
Close to front of class
Help pass out materials to help with transitions
Provided help from myself and peer buddy
Pre-measured materials that is adapted to the whole
class
More visual worksheet rather than all words
