HOMEWORK X
(Due May 3, 2013)

Question 1. Dry air is inhaled at a rate of 10 liter/min through a trachea with a

diameter of 20 mm and a length of 125 mm. The inner surface of the trachea is at
normal body temperature of 37C and may be assumed to be saturated with water.
a) Assuming steady, fully developed flow in the trachea, estimate the mass
transfer coefficient.
b) Estimate the daily liquid water loss (liter/day) associated with the evaporation
in the trachea.
Question 2. Consider a rain drop falling at its terminal velocity (can be considered as
a solid particle). Starting at an altitude of 1000 m and 1 mm diameter calculate the
diameter of the droplet as it reaches the earth, assume that average air temperature
is 10 C and percent relative humidity is 50%.
Question 3. A countercurrent double pipe heat exchanger is used to cool an organic
liquid from 80oC to 65oC . The flow rate of the organic liquid is 3500 kg/hr. Water at
15oC and 3000 kg/hr is available for the cooling. The heat exchanger is constructed
by placing a 5.0 cm tube around a copper tube with 2.54 cm outside diameter and
2.22 cm inside diameter. Water flows through the copper tube. There is also
appreciable thermal resistance due to scale formation on the outside surface of the
copper tube (Rfo = 2x10-3 m2 K/W). Assume the following physical properties are valid
for the organic liquid at its average temperature:
= 860 kg/m3; = 1.7 x 10 3 kg.m/s; k = 0.14 W/m K; cp = 1600 J/kg K.
a) Calculate the length of the heat exchanger assuming viscosity correction
factor is 1.
b) Estimate the pressure drop for the tube side using the inside heat transfer
coefficient calculated in part (a).
Question 4. A shell-and-tube heat exchanger with 1-shell pass and 20-tube passes
is used to heat glycerin (Cp = 2480 J/kg.C) in the shell, with hot water in the tubes.
The tubes are thin-walled and have a diameter of 1.5 cm and length of 2 m per pass.
The water enters the tubes at 100C at a rate of 5 kg/s and leaves at 55C. The
glycerin enters the shell at 15C and leaves at 55C. Determine the mass flow rate of
the glycerin and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger.

One: by imitation, which is the easiest
Two: by experience; which is the bitterest
Three: by meditation, which is the noblest
