N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Felicia Coiner

Date of Activity:

Faculty name: Mary OConnell

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):
1. I participated in an interprofessional code blue activity with a group of residents and an RN
activity leader at the VA. My role was to act as the RN during a simulated code to demonstrate to
first year residents how they should interact with RNs in a real code.
2. I worked with the nurse manager at the step-down unit to interview a potential hire to the unit.
My role was to represent the step-down unit as the second interviewer.
3. I performed community service at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where I served dinner to
the homeless/hungry population. I then participated in a Faith and Community Health Network
meeting to plan future collaboration between faith organizations and BUMC.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
1. The code blue experience was held in the simulation room on the 1st floor of the SAVAHC.
The activity runs for one hour every Tuesday afternoon.
2. The nurse manager holds interviews in his office whenever positions are available. Interviews
typically last for one hour, which was how long this interview experience took.
3. The dinner is held in the churchs extension, which has a kitchen and dining facility. The
meeting was in the same room following the departure of the dinner guests. Both events happen
every Wednesday. The dinner lasts for two hours and the meeting lasted for one hour.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
1. I enjoyed this experience because I had the opportunity to learn the standardized organization
of the code cart. I reviewed the codes process so that I now feel prepared to participate in a
code. During the interprofessional experience I also interacted with the residents, which gave me
the chance to practice my role.

2. I appreciated the opportunity to interview the new hire with the nurse manager. Not only did I
get to learn what is expected of both a new and experienced nurse, I also saw the perspective of
the interviewer. I now feel prepared to participate in any interview.
3. Working with the homeless/hungry at Mount Calvary was humbling. I was able to practice my
service leadership while performing community service. I served the dinner attendants their
meals while also offering words of inspiration. The congregation was appreciative of my service.
I also enjoyed participating in the Network meeting because I was able to observe the planning
stages for the program that would connect faith communities and healthcare communities. I saw
as the two organizations coordinated a program that would provide non-medical support to
patients to prevent re-hospitalization after discharge. I feel programs like this could significantly
improve patient outcomes. I plan on taking the information I learned to my first hospital to help
decrease the rate of re-admission after discharge for my patients.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why
or why not? (Describe)
1. I would recommend this experience to my classmates. Collaborating with the residents helps
develop our interprofessional relationships. I also think that learning the organization structure of
the medications and supplies in a code cart is vital to the effective execution of a code.
2. I would highly recommend participating in an interview for all recent and soon-to-be nursing
school graduates. I now understand what employers are looking for in a new nurse. This
knowledge could be the difference between my classmates getting a job or not.
3. I believe my fellow classmates could benefit from attending a Faith and Community Health
Network meeting because preventing re-admission is just as important as the care received
during hospitalization.
