History through a Childs eyes

For my assignment, History through a childs eyes, I decided to interview a student from
Springwood Elementary School. Her name is Janiya Farmer and shes five years old. Janiya is in
Kindergarten and has a behavioral contract with her teacher. She is easily distracted and usually
causes class room interruptions by tantrums and getting off task. Janiya has an elder sister in the
first grade and a smaller brother in Pre-K who also attends Springwood. Janiya and her siblings
are taken care of by her aunt. In addition. Janiya is on grade level learning.
I decided to choose pictures that relates to African American women in History. These
pictures included: Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Mae Jemison, Oprah Winfrey, Condolezza Rice
First Lady Michelle Obama and Viola Davis. Before showing the pictures, I informed Janiya that
this was just a fun assignment and that she should just answer what came to mind and put the
pictures in order from earliest to present as best as she could. After doing the assignment, Janiya
placed the pictures in this order: Rosa Parks, Mae Jemison, Harriet Tubman, Condolezza Rice,
Viola Davis, Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis and First Lady Michelle Obama.
After the pictures were placed in order by Janiya, I asked her what year she thought the first
and last picture she placed occurred. The years she stated were Rosa Parks, 1980 and Michelle

Obama 2015. When the assignment was over, Janiya expressed that it was fun but she wasnt
sure who most of the ladies were. I explained that these ladies were the first black women to
accomplish different things in society.

After conducting this interview, I learned that Janiya was unaware of many of the social science
facts of our country and the world. I assumed because she is Kindergarten she was not exposed
to many of these facts. However, this showed me how important it is to implement social studies
within our curriculum. Our students are oblivious to what is going on in their own country and I
believe that in order to make a difference in society, it is important to know where you come
from and what is happening. This assignment is a great way to assess what students know. I

would implement it in my classroom as a form of a diagnostic test and also a fun activity. It will
allow me to know where to start when teaching about social studies.

After the interview and activity, I realized that Janiya was not knowledgeable about many
social studies facts and things she should know as a citizen of America. Even though she
is only 5 years old there are certain things I believe she should have known or have an
idea about. This activity gave me insight on how students are uneducated about their
country and being an international student, I take pride in knowing where I came from
and its history. The lack of knowledge presented by Janiya made me encouraged to
implement such a diagnostic interview with my students when I become a teacher. I
believe this activity would be a great form of assessment and will allow me to know what
material I should cover within my social studies lesson. I think students should be
exposed to such information from a young age. We teach our students the pledge of
allegiance but do we teach them anything else? I think social studies is not stressed in the
curriculum enough and it shows with the results of the interview. Nevertheless, I enjoyed
conducting the interview and it was a learning lesson for not only Janiya, but for me as
well.
