Common Misconceptions

1. Equal volumes or equal masses of different substances contain the same number of moles
2. The term mole refers to molecules
3. One mole of various substances may contain different numbers of units of the substance

Class: 10th/11th grade Honors Chemistry

Title/ Topic: Molar Display/ How to determine molar mass
Standards:
Once the number of moles of a substance is known, amounts can be
changed to mass, volume of a gas, volume of solutions and/or number
of particles.
Objectives:

TSSBAT compare a mole of different substances and recognize that even

though they have different masses they still contain the same number of
particles.
TSSBAT state that the relationship between grams and moles is called molar
mass.
TSSBAT calculate molar mass given a compound or element.

Materials: Molar display: Milk of Magnesia (Mg(OH)2), Vinegar/ Acetic Acid (C2H4O2)
baking soda (NaHCO3), water(H2O), Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Acetone (C3H6O),
Tums (CaCO3), 7 beakers, and a scale. Molar Mass worksheet.
Instructional Sequence:
Engage: For homework, students will watch and take notes on The Mole and
Molar Mass (13:13) Video.
Explain: Through discussion we will go over what they learned in the video
for homework and things they thought were important from their notes.

Explore: I will give students a chemical formula for a common house hold
compound and they will calculate the molar mass of it.
Apply: Once they have calculated the molar mass I will weigh out how many
grams of the substance makes 1 mole. The students will then be able to see
what a mole of each substance looks like and how they differ in weight.
Evaluate: for homework students will complete the Molar Mass Worksheet
Questions:
1. When using the atomic mass to calculate molar mass we round to what
decimal place?
2. When calculating molar mass of a diatomic how does this affect your
answer?
3. How do you calculate molar mass?
4. Will a mole of water and a mole of silver have the same molar mass?
5. How is mass different when comparing the mole of different substances?
6. Acetic Acid is the main ingredient in Vinegar, what if you were at the fair
and too many French fries and had an upset stomach. Which one of these
substances would you take to calm it and why?

Assessment:
Informal: during the you teach me molar mass discussion and molar display
activity I will be able to gauge how well they understand molar mass and how
well they are doing at calculating molar mass.
Technology: Students will need to use their chrome books or another device to
view the video that was required for homework.
Academic Language: Students will need to understand and define what molar
mass is. Students will use easy and complicated formulas to determine molar mass.
Safety:
-

If pouring near students have them wear safety googles while the teacher
is pouring substances into beakers.
Do not pour the substances from the beakers back into their original bottle
if you still intend to use them from other uses. If the beakers are brand
new this is alright to do.

Adapting For Diverse Learners: guided notes can be created for the homework
video. For the molar display activity they only need to do the calculations for the
easier formulas.
