Case 3

10/21/2015

Part I Read this scenario and study the lesson plan that has been assigned to your group. You
have decided that you need some extra money. After all, living the college student dream does
take a little bit of spending cash. Since you are majoring in education, you have determined what
better way to develop your finances than to sign-up to be a substitute teacher. This semester you
have designed your schedule to have class on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridayleaving you
Tuesday and Thursday to sub. You finally have received your first call to sub. Eager to do well
on your first subbing assignment, you arrive early and begin to look over the lesson you are
expected to teach.
Part II As a group, discuss responses for each of the following questions.
Do you think you would be able to teach this lesson? Why or why not?
Are there any unclear aspects of the lesson?
Is there any information missing from the lesson?
How do you think the lesson can be improved?
Do you see any other problems?
Part III Write a 1 page, single spaced document that answers each of the questions posed in
Part II. Note: You should also review the video presentation Evaluating Lesson Plans as well
as the Lesson Plan Evaluation Rubric (linked in Week 7 in Blackboard). Your written
document is due in lab on Wednesday of this week.
Response:
Lesson Plan: Tornadoes 3rd Grade
In the Tornadoes lesson plan, the teacher has listed several concepts beginning with Students
will but the information that precedes this does not provide enough detail to help the students
meet this requirement. The rest of the lesson plan also lacks information that is essential to meet
the expectations the teacher has placed. Since this information is missing I do not feel confident
that I would be able to teach this lesson. This lesson plan states that students will need to know
about natural disasters, tornadoes, and where tornado alley is located. The teacher has only listed
crayons, construction paper, and bottle tornadoes. These materials will not provide the
information I need in order to teach the desired concepts. However, if this lesson referenced a
textbook page, article, or website where this information could be found I think I would be able
to teach this lesson.
Some unclear sections of this lesson plan are the evaluation and procedure processes.
The procedures given simply state to Tell the student but theres no explanation of where I
could find the information or which tools I could use to present this information. The evaluation
portion of this lesson plan requests that students complete an art project listing three things they
have learned and a teacher observation. All of the evaluation points do not detail what is actually
expected from the student and what kinds of materials the students would be using to complete
it.
Overall the teacher failed to provide or address the instructional goals and objectives,
useful materials, resources, technology integration, and the lesson is not student-centered. An

obvious resource that is missing is the textbook that should be used and the materials the students
will use. Additionally, the lesson plan is lacking in the assessment potion because he/she does not
indicate what would be considered an acceptable art project and does not include guidelines to
optimize student success. Technology integration is not mentioned in the lesson plan at all but its
integration would benefit the teacher and students. Lastly, most of the procedures listed in this
lesson plan refer to what the teacher will be doing instead of the student. Most of the procedure
steps begin with Tell the students and while it is important for the teacher to know what they
will be doing in teach step it is also important to know what the learner will be doing in order to
learn the material.
This lesson plan could be improved by adding more information such as resources,
materials, tools, project guidelines, and technology integration. One tool that could be used to
solve many of the problems I may face would be access to a computer and the internet. Since
this teacher has not provided the educational sources I can use to teach this lesson I would need
to research this topic before teaching the class. With access to a computer and internet I could
research this topic on a scholarly data base to obtain more information. I could also search the
web for videos and pictures that would support the material.
The biggest problem I see with this lesson plan is the lack of or poor objectives and state
standards. The overviews and concepts listed do not provide enough detail for the teacher and
student to understand what is expected from them and how they learn these concepts. Since the
objectives are missing it will be difficult to know what exactly is expected which will make it
difficult for the substitute to teach the lesson effectively. The substitute may experience
confusion and even fail to meet the goals the teacher had in mind because the objectives are
missing resulting in no direction regarding student performance, condition, and criterion.
