Topic Selected: How does technology benefit ESL students?

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review:

The number of ELLs (English Language Learner) increases every year in united
stated. This fast growth in number of ELL students brings the requisition of
finding efficient teaching methods. (Diallo, 2014) The fast developing technology
and resources enable educators to use computers, internet and applications for
promoting student learning and meet the needs of educators of ELLs. Andreis
study emphasizes the benefits of technology integration. It is stated that ESL
students who have access to technology, software and application are capable of
directing their self-learning which is increasing their critical thinking skills and
placing them in the center of education. (Andrei, 2014) Having communication
and interaction at their basis, social networks foster the creation of groups or

boards, these features being the ones that will assist ESL teachers in drafting
more interactive activities. Facilitating higher order thinking, Blooms Revised
Taxonomy will assist teachers in keeping the balance between their control and
students autonomy without exposing the latter to the vastness of the web. In
addition, the activities based on Blooms Taxonomy will be more coherent by
combining traditional elements with web-based ones. (Chisega- Negrilla & Kraft
2015)
The technology enhances learners to reach large dictionaries and thesaurus in
small smart phones, tablets or computers instead of carrying them all around.
Learners can reach the information very fast and find reliable results for their
searches. (Nisbet & Austin, 2013)
Although many studies show that technologies provide support language
education, English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers dont accommodate
the technology very effectively in the classroom. (Yang, & Walker, 2015) Yang
and Walker indicate the importance of professional developments besides
providing infrastructure for technology integration in ESL classes. Indeed Diallo
expresses in his study that every school doesnt have the technological tools to
provide instruction and it requires more time and political push to enable schools
to allocate funds to obtain them. (Diallo, 2014)

2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection:

I agree with the researches and articles I reviewed. The number of ESL students
increase rapidly in my campus as well as it is discussed in literature review. In
past 2 years the number increases twice as much it was 2 years ago in my
campus.
This requires effective instruction as it is suggested in articles to help them
overcome their language barrier to enable them have enough academic
language to listen, speak, write and read so they can be placed to general
education classes.
Implementing research outcomes form my campus is not very difficult. As a
campus we are lucky that we have almost enough technological infrastructures.
We can use Chromebooks, IPads, Smart boards, documentary cameras for
instruction as technological tools. Besides our students are provided attractive
software programs and resources that are addressing their needs and learning
pace such as Reading Eggs, Reading Eggspress, Study Island, I station,
Reading Smart for our ESL students. However, our ESL teachers are not
benefiting from these resources very effectively. They prefer traditional teaching
styles most of the time and their usage of the technology is limited. They allocate
one period a week to use these programs separately. I desire those programs
were used as a part of learning activity happening in class daily. To increase the
usage of technology for instruction our ESL teachers should attend to more
training. I am planning to communicate to software providing companies and
request webinars and some support for effective usage of these programs and
monitor ESL teachers if they are capable of using and provide support within my
abilities.
