Annotated Bibliography
Akers, B. & Boudreaux D. J. (2009). Immigration Benefits the Economy. In Opposing
Viewpoints: Immigration (pp 22-29). Detroit: Gale and Greenhaven Press.
Akers and Boudreaux point out that immigration, besides being a problem, provides a
boost to the United States economy by making it more efficient and productive. They
also argue that immigration would increase the efficiency results in higher wages of the
United States workers. The point of view of these authors will help me to know how
immigration helps the United States to be a wealthy nation.
Binswanger, H. (2013, March 4). Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants Is Not Enough, They
Deserve An Apology. In Forbes. Retrieved from
http://www.forbes.com/sites/harrybinswanger/2013/03/04/amnesty-for-illegalimmigrants-is-not-enough-they-deserve-an-apology/
Harry B. uses a more open minded argument to explain how every person has the right
to go to any country without being discriminated against and incriminated. He says that
the answer to the terrorism is not to protect America under a bunker where every
person that enters to it without permission, is considered a criminal. The different
perspective of this article helps me to see immigration laws from a more liberal and
deeper perspective.
Chomsky, A. (2007). They take our jobs! and 20 other myths about immigration. Boston,
MA: Beacon.
Chomsky breaks up twenty of the most common beliefs that some American Citizens

think that are real. She discusses and debates claims about how immigrants are a drain
on the U.S. economy, taking Americans jobs, contributing to poverty, and challenging
American identity. This in-depth analysis helps me to understand better at how some
beliefs against immigrants are only myths and not truths.
Dalmia, S. (2009). Immigrants Do Not Burden Social Services. In Opposing Viewpoints:
Immigration (pp 55-59). Detroit: Gale and Greenhaven Press.
Shikha Dalmia says that illegal immigrants are not a drain on the social services in the
United States. Many immigrants doing their payments to social services by taxes, do
not even have access or receive support from them. These extra payments give
additional funds to these programs. With this well-grounded example that Shikha argues,
I will be able to do a better analysis in favor of the immigration concern.
Elmendorf, D. (2013, June 18). CBO Releases Two Analysis of the Senates Immigration
Legislation. In Congressional Budget Office. Retrieved from
https://www.cbo.gov/publication/44345

Doug

E. analyses and describes the senates proposed immigration reform bill (S. 744), and
how this would decrease the deficit by $197 billion over the 2014-2023 period and boost
the economic output. This bill would increase the number of noncitizens who would
legally enter on temporary or permanent basis to the United States. This article is very
important to me because it points out how this reform would decrease federal deficit and
increment the U.S. economy.
Guskin, J. & Wilson, D.L. (2007). The Politics of Immigration: Questions and Answers.
New York: Monthly Review.

This book is an effective tool for immigrants and supporters to break myths and the
disinformation about immigration. The book also contains solid data and clear reasons to
change the mind of those who believe that immigrants steal the jobs of American
citizens and drain public services. This book helps me to get a better understanding at
how some among the American population believe about the immigration are only
misconceptions in society.
Johnson, K. R. (2007). Opening the Floodgates: Why America Needs to Rethink its Border
and Immigration Laws. New York: New York University Press.
The book mentions that open migration policies need to be fully analyzed. Johnson
presents thoughtful arguments about the case of more open borders and outlines that
migration flows are not standardized by border enforcement but by economic, political
and social pressures. The convincing arguments that are stated on the book will help me
by giving me a fuller comprehension of the open border policy and its benefits.
Krayewski, E. (2013, Feb 17). 5 Reasons to Grant Amnesty to Illegal Immigrants. In
Reason. Retrieved from https://reason.com/archives/2013/02/07/5-reasons-for-amnestyfor-illegal-immigr
This article says that a way in which the economy of the United States could grow, is by
granting amnesty to the illegal immigrants. Krayewski also states that this would
increase the amount of paid taxes and support the movement for freedom. This article
will help me by giving me points that not only state why illegal immigrants would help
the economy, but also how the U.S. would be affected by not granting the amnesty for
illegal immigrants.

Lynch, R. & Oakford, P. (2013, May 17) National and State-by-State Economic Benefits of
Immigration Reform. In Center for American Progress. Retrieved from
https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/immigration/report/2013/05/17/63295/national
-and-state-by-state-economic-benefits-of-immigration-reform/
Patrick O. and Robert L. highlight how the economy of the United States would be
benefited by the creation of a policy that provides legal status and citizenship for the
millions of immigrants that already live in the country. The evidence that these authors
came up with will be very helpful to prove that immigration is actually good for the
economy of the United States.
Rector, R & Richwine, J. (2013, May 3). The Fiscal Cost of Unlawful Immigrants and
Amnesty to the U.S. Taxpayer. In The Heritage Foundation. Retrieved from
http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2013/05/the-fiscal-cost-of-unlawfulimmigrants-and-amnesty-to-the-us-taxpayer
This article states that an amnesty for unlawful immigrants would create a large expense
for the taxpayers in the United States. Rector and Richwine bring up four services and
benefits that the government provides to the American population that are relevant to
immigration: population-based services, public education, means-tested welfare benefits
and direct benefits. The opposing point of view of this article helps me to have a better
understanding of the whole topic and of all the different perspectives of it.
