Piaget: Observing Childrens

Thinking Skills

Name: Khulood Abdulla Ahmed

Date: 24/11/2015

Piaget designed many tasks to test childrens logical thinking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRF27F2bn-A
For this activity, do each of the following:
1. Select three of Piagets Tasks for Logical thinking (from the
hand-out or from the video we watched).
2. Collect the materials you will need, write the procedure and
the English you will need on the attached forms Preparing
for Piagets Experiments
(one for each experiment=3 forms). Practice giving the tests
FIRST.
3. Select two children:
One should be in the pre-operational stage (ages2-7).
It is best if you choose one in the middle about four
years old.
The other should be in the concrete operational stage
(age 7 -11)
Be sure to get permission from the childs parent
before doing the task!
4. Set up the cameras and perform the tasks. Use the photos
and label them in your reports. You will fill in 3 reports for
each child (attached). 6 reports total! (and 3 PREPARATION
reports)
5. Think about how you will also get some pictures. Do not
take pictures of the childrens faces! Just from the back or
from above.
Keep in mind: Remember this is a scientific experiment! You
must be scientific and do the experiments properly. If you do not,
your results may not be accurate.

Be sure not to tell the child, You are right! or You are wrong!,
because there is no right or wrong. We are just trying to find out
if Piagets theory about cognitive development is correct.

Pre-operational Stage REPORT 1

Name of child Hanan
Age 5
Gender Female
Name of experiment 1 Milk
Describe the basic procedure of the task (How it is done)
First, I brought two small glasses and one tall glass. Second, I
putted milk in the two small glasses in front of him. I asked her if
they have the same amount of milk or not. Finally, I poured the
milk from one of the small glass to the tall glass in front of him. I
asked her again if they have the same amount of milk or not.

Describe the childs responses

When she checked the two small glasses she knew they are the
same. However, when I poured the milk to the taller glass, she
thought the amount of milk in the small glass is more. She said
this is a fat glass and fat mean more.

What do the childs responses signify?

She is five years old so she is in stage 2 (Pre-operational). In this
stage the child uses symbols (words and images) to represent
objects but does not reason logically. The child also has the ability
to pretend. During this stage, the child is egocentric. However she
thought the small fat glass had more. When I asked her how she
said fat people eat more so fat glass have more. Her mind still
not develop to know the different between the glasses dont
mean it could not be equal.

Describe the basic procedure of the task
First, I made in front of her two rows of six dirhams. Each rows
had three dirhams. I asked her if they have the same amount or
not. Second I separate one row again in front of her and make it
little taller. And again I asked her if they still have the same
amount or not.

Describe the childs responses

First, she count the first row and she find it was three dirhams.
Then she count the second row and find out its also three
dirhams. Second, when she saw me separated the second row she
count again. Moreover she still think the separate one is more
because its taller

Name of child Hanan
Age 5
Gender Female
Name of experiment 3 Biscuit
Describe the basic procedure of the task
First, I asked her if she would like to eat biscuit with me. She
agreed so I took out three pieces of biscuit. I putted two pieces of
biscuits in my side and one in her side. I asked her if I share it in
fair way. Second, I broke the one pieces of her biscuit to two.
Asked her again if it fair or not.

Describe the childs responses

When I gave her one biscuit she said you have two and I have
one. When I broke her biscuit and gave her. She said its equal
now.

What do the childs responses signify?

She is five years old so she is in stage 2 (Pre-operational). In this
stage the child uses symbols (words and images) to represent
objects but does not reason logically. The child also has the ability
to pretend. During this stage, the child is egocentric. However he
mind only can see the amount of pieces and not the size. She

What do the childs responses signify?

He is eight years old so he is in stage 3 (concrete operational).
In this stage the child can think logically about concrete objects
and can thus add and subtract. The child also understand
conservation. However I think his mind still didnt develop to
understand the milk in the different glass had the same amount.
