Activity Observed:

Notes:
St will build vocabulary by determining the meaning of words in text when reading.
Students will further develop and strengthen their ability to determine the main idea in a paragraph as
well as key details contained within the paragraph.
T draws attention to the document. T asks title. T talks about paragraphs. St describe the paper as
squares on the paper. T demonstrates how to count paragraphs.
T asks questions about first and last paragraph. Good strategy for EL, practice with ordinal words. T
acknowledges st who numbered paragraphs.
T demonstrates how to use red pens when st do not know. T draws a red box around word. T-show me
with your hands when you are done.
Question: How do you ensure the younger st are reading and understand as well as the older st do?
Question: Is it confusing to have your paragraph different than on their paper? Do you have document
cameras? Also on the vocab example as you put 2 words in a box and had them do differently.
T asks for eyes on me when done.
T directs to copy the sent where word was found. North America was not a word with a box, T asks if
st know what North America is. T stops when she sees st are not done copying.
Comment: It may again be confusing as you have 2 sentences in box and only want them to copy one.
Why did I ask you about North America? Could NA be a clue about European? What is in the word
European that might give us a clue about what the word means?
Suggestion: An EL strategy to use when working through work like this is to have st talk to their
partner or group about the answers before the class shares out. This way all st get a chance to talk and
share their thinking. Also, before breaking up the parts of the paragraph, read the paragraph several
time. You might read, you might have them read with you. You might have them read to each other.
Then try and determine word meanings. You are trying to determine meaning from context. You have
to allow them the opportunity to understand the context.

PracticumSupervisoryNotes
RevisedJanuary5,2015

T trying to make a connection to the endings of the words European and Indian. Trying to show the
connection in the sentence of the place words. This was difficult. Not sure they made the connection.
T gives instructions to find another word in 2nd paragraph by themselves in the 3rd word box, copy the
sentence, and write what you think it means.
T moves to help st. Another st says she needs help. T moves to help st as needed.
T says this is their exit ticket to leave today.
T excuses st when supplies are cleaned up.
Again, I would suggest a closure activity/discussion. What did we learn, how do we find the meaning
of words we may not know? What are some clues we might look for? ETC.
What EL strategies did you use here?
