Assembly Script 1 G3PB

Nahee

Hello everyone, and welcome to our assembly.

Juan

We would like to tell you about some of the things we

have been learning, and how we have been learning
them.

Claire

At the beginning of the year, we were all using run-on

sentences in our writing. We needed to learn how to avoid
(or stop) doing this, but first we had to learn what a runon sentence is.

Kathry
n

A run-on sentence is a sentence that contains two or more

sentences linked together without the proper punctuation,
but how do we know when a sentence should end?

Iyed

We needed to know about the parts of a complete

sentence.

Dunixe

I know. A complete sentence starts with a capital letter,

and ends with a period, questions mark, or exclamation
point.

Melika

Yes, but for a sentence to be complete, it must also have

a subject and a predicate.

Fahad
Nuria

Omar

What is a subject? Why is it important?

A subject is who or what the sentence is about. It will be a
noun.
What is a noun, and why is it important? Hey, dont we
have a song for that?

Mohamed

Oh, I get it. In the complete sentence Mr. Morton walked

down the street, Mr. Morton is the subject of the sentence,
because he is who the sentence is about, and Mr. Morton
is a noun.
Now that we know that a noun is a person place or thing,
and the noun that is the subject of a sentence is who or
what the sentence is about, what is a predicate?
A predicate is the part of a sentence that has a verb that
tells you what the subject is doing or being.

Oh a verb is an action word. For example swimming,

playing, laughing, or running.
Well, maybe. There are also being verbs.
What do you mean? What is a being verb? Do we have
another song?
Verb Song

In the complete sentence Mr. Morton was lonely, the

subject, Mr. Morton, isnt doing anything. He is simply
being lonely. The predicate is was lonely, and was is the
being verb.

Oh, and in the complete sentence Mr. Morton talked to his

Ludvig cat, the subjects, Mr. Morton is doing something. He is
talking to his cat. The doing verb is talked, and the whole
predicate is talked to his cat.
Oh, and in the complete sentence Mr. Morton is a nervous
Margot man, the subject, Mr. Morton, isnt doing anything. He is
simply being a nervous man. The being verb is is, and the
whole predicate is, is a nervous man.
Lola

Ok, but who is Mr. Morton? Are you talking about the guy
in the song about complete sentences? Why dont we sing
it and find out?

So now that we know when a sentence is complete, we

should be able to fix a run-on sentence like this one
I like cookies cake is my favorite dessert.
Who can tell me how many complete sentences are in this
run-on sentence?
Where does the first sentence end? Remember that a
complete sentence needs a subject and a predicate.
So what do we need to do fix the run-on sentence?
Thats right, we can fix a run-on sentence by adding full
stops and capital letters where they belong.

Fahad

Can anyone tell me if there is another way to fix a run-on

sentence?

Lola

Thats right, we can also fix a run-on sentence by adding

a comma and a conjunction to link two short sentences.
