    Why not Division by Zero?

    Problem:
    Suppose I have 30 pieces of candy, how many
    groups of zero pieces of candy can I make?
    Problem:
    Place these 30 pieces of candy in zero equal
    groups. How many in each group?
    Note: Posing these two problems can help students to
    start to realize that it is not possible; however, dont
    stop here.
    Think about the relationship between multiplication
    and Division. How could we use this to illustrate
    mathematically why division by zero is not allowed?
    51=5
    8 2 = 16
    80=0
    12 0 = 0

    5 1=5
    16 2 = 8

    Explain your thinking.
