SOUND

HORROR FILM RESEARCH

MUSIC
Music is one of the most important aspects of a horror film as it is the
main element to help the film to create a specific mood to the scenes. It
helps create the kind of emotion that the director wants the audience to
feel.
Common conventions included are isolated instruments. They help link
the idea of for example vulnerability to the audience.
Long suspense notes often help contrast with short sharp notes to help
shock the audience.
Extreme but intentional changes of pitch tones for example low long
brass notes which suddenly change to fast high pitched notes to make
the audience feel immediately tense.

VOICES
Lots of voices within horror films have been chosen to reflect fear, tension
and panic.
An iconic voice used in the horror film SAW from Jigsaw. His tone is well
suited for the part as it creates fear and tension as it is very distinctive
which therefore it stands out. His voice also helps to create an immediate
sense of fear, intimidation and power.
For our film, we want Phoebe to sound similar but without using actual
words. We found that noises sound a lot more scary compared to words
as it creates ambiguity.

SOUND EFFECTS
There are lots of sound effects that occur in a horror film:
1. Classic sounds include laughing, door creeks, loud bangs, whispering,
lullabies, screaming.
2. Echoed voices that helps heighten the audiences mood, sense and
emotion towards the film which can give a ghostly feel.
3. In our production, we will be having a lot of sound effects as we want to
build up the suspense using loud bangs as Phoebe wanders around the
house, slow quiet whispers to scare the characters, door creeks and
wicked laughing.
