Unit plan on plants

Monday 5/11/15
Introduce the topic of plants
What are plants?
o Flowers
o Fruit
o Veggies
o Trees
Students will read, How does a seed Grow
Introduce the activity of the day
Students will draw out flowers on construction paper
Tuesday5/12/15
Introduce the topic of parts of a plant/tree
Students will read, seeds sprout
Students will help me sing the poem of parts of a plant
o Flower, stem, leaves, and roots(which is to be sung in the head
shoulders knees and toes theme)
Students will observe the parts of a plant as I write down the parts on plant
that I draw up.
o Roots
Suck up water from the soil
Keep plants from falling over
Carrots are roots
o Leaves
Make food for the plant
Give off oxygen so that we can breathe
Some can be eaten-like lettuce
o Stem
Carry water and food to the plant
Hold up the leaves
Some can be eaten-celery
o Flower
Creates pollen
Reproduction
Activity for the day
(Math)Students will create flowers using construction paper, tissue paper and
dice.
o Students will roll dice, and according the number that they roll that is
how many ppetals they will place on their flower.

Wednesday 5/13/15
Introduce the cycle of a plant/ tree
Students will review the parts of the plant through the rhyme

Flower, stem, leaves, and roots(which is to be sung in the head


shoulders knees and toes theme)
Students will read the Life cycles of trees
Students will be illustrated the life cycle of a plant, through a diagram that I
created.
o 1. Soil gets placed in the ground
o 2The seed cracks and a tiny shoot appears
o 3. The shoot grows up to become the stem and the roots grow down to
the soil.
o 4. The plant gets taller and the stem get thicker. Leaves and flowers
grow from the stem.
o 5. The flower creates new seeds and it starts all over again.
o The plant needs sunlight and rain in order for it to grow healthy.
Students will read What do roots do?
Students will observe the life cycle of plant through the plants they have
grown in class.
Activity for the day
(ELA)Students will be creating their own cycle of a plant book, using a
worksheet I provided, and markers
Students will write down the important key terms on each page.
Introduction to fruit food
Students will create the life cycle of a plant using fruit and veggies.
o Seed will be raisins
o Stem will be celery
o Leaves will be spinach
o Flowers will be broccoli
o Seed will then again be a raisin
o

Thursday5/14/15
Introduce why do we need plants?
Students will read Plants feed me
Students will engage in a lesson about why we need plants through a color
diagram
o Food
A lot of what we eat comes from a plant(veggies, fruits)
o Water
Helps distribute the planets water.
Helps move water from the soil in the ground out into the air
through photosynthesis
o Air
Oxygen is brought to you by plants.
The plants take in what is called carbon dioxide and the plant
released oxygen which is what we breathe
o Medicine
Many medicines are made naturally from plants to help when
we get sick
o Energy

Coal and fossil fuels are formed by plants that lived a long time
ago

Shelter
Protection and shelter are proprieties of plants.
The timber coming from the trees is used in construction for
many of our homes.
Cotton plants provide us with cotton for our clothes
Plants produce shelter for animals and other species.
Activity for the day
(ART )Students will create their own flowers using paint, and construction
paper
Students will look at a vase that contains flowers, and the students will use
the paint provided to make flowers of their own with paint and brushes.
Students will be provided with a cut out of a small vase which will be glued on
the construction paper.
This will be artistic hands on activity.

Friday 5/15/15
Review the parts of a plant
Students will sing the poem again
Review the cycle of a plant
Students will use diagrams that were created to help them review
Cont teaching why plants are important
Students will read A fruit is a suitcase for seeds
Activity for the day
(ART) students will trace different kinds of leaves found from outside, using
tracing paper, and crayons
(SCIENCE) Students will draw out the stage that their pea seeds are in, using
construction paper and the model of their plant.
