1/ vs. 1/ni2 (-Rydberg Constant)

.Properly label your graph (labels for axes, including units, and a title)

Include a trendline and its equation and R 2 value on your graph. This is done by right-clicking on one of the data points
on your graph and choosing "Add Trendline" from the drop down menu. The first tab asks what type of trendline you

Type your calculations for RH in (m-1) from the Excel-determined slope and y-intercept. (2 pts)
RH from the slope: -(11.246x10-3 )/(1x10-9 )=RH
RH= 11246000 m-1

Summary of Results
In the table below, summarize the five values you have determined for the Rydberg constant, and calculated the percent
error from the literature value (1.0974x107m-1).

Results and Discussion

1. Compare the accuracy of the five values you have determined for R H. Discuss benefits and drawbacks for the different
approaches for determining an accurate value for RH.
(3 pts)

The most accurate constant that was calculated was from the Excel chart's y-intercept (0.394% error). After that the next mos
accurate wsa the In-lab Single Point calcualtion with an error of 0.591%. The least accurate was the Excel slope with 2.479%
Based on this data in terms of accuracy the Excel y-intercept would be the best method to use. A draw back of this however i
that you need to have a set of data, while for the second most accurate calculation method, the In-lab Single Point clacualtion
only needs to have two theoretical points. The In-lab slope and y-intercept, as well as the Excel Slope have the same draw
backs as the Excel y-intercept, but with the additional draw back fo being less accurate.

2. The general equation for the energy related to an electron moving from one energy level to another in a hydrogen atom (Eq
2 in the Introduction information provided in the lab manual) is:
or rearranged,

Using Ephoton = h = hc/ and

, along with your most accurate R H value, calculate an experimental

value for the constant in the equation (2.18 x 10-18 J). In other words, create Eqn 2 using the two given equations, and then
calculate your experimental value for the constant . Compare your calculated experimental value to the value provided in the
equation and discuss any differences in the magnitudes of the values (for the purposes of this report, you do not need to discu
the different signs with these values).
(3 pts)
Calculations:
Ephoton=(6.626x10-34*3x108)/656.89x10-9= 3.03x10-19
1/656.89x10-9 = 11017200((1/nf2 )-(1/ni2 ))
1522324.89 = 11017200((1/nf2 )-(1/ni2 ))
0.1388=((1/nf2 )-(1/ni2 ))
3.03x10-19 /0.1388=2.18x10-18J
