Grade: Kindergarten

Lesson Title: Solve addition word problems.

Materials/Resources Needed: Pencil, worksheet for each student, strategy chart the shows
different ways to solve the problem (count- on, ten frame, draw a picture).

Class we already know what addition is and how to do find the sum, but today we will learn how to
add numbers when working with word problems.

K.OA.A2: Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract with in 10, eg, by
using objects or drawings to represent the problem.

Lets look at an example first. (Sammy and Max are sitting by each other at lunch. They notice they
both have cookies and want to know how many they have together. If Sammy has 5 cookies AND
Max has 4 cookies. How many do they have TOGETHER?) OK class the very first thing we do is
read the whole word problem. Then we re-read it again and underline the amount that each person
has. You might underline how many cookies Sammy has and how many cookies Max has. The
third time you read I want you to circle any key words. Some of the key words I think to circle
would be AND and TOGETHER because those words stand out to me. So lets do it together, lets
underline the amount ok cookies and the key words. Now that we have all the important
information we can set up the equation to solve the problem. Since we circled the words ADD and
TOGETHER we know the problem is addition and we add the numbers to find the sum.
(Write on the board): 5+4=______ at this point I would turn to my strategies chart to help us find a
way to get the answer. Then I will draw five circles to represent each cookie Sammy has than an
addition sign with four more circles after the sign to represent Maxs cookies and then an equal
sign. Then to find the answer I will start on the left side of the equation and start counting all the
circles. Once I have found the answer I will write it after the equal sign. So now I know all together
Sammy and Max have 9 cookies.
Now we will do a word problem on the worksheet I gave you.
Problem #1: Macy and April are playing house with their dolls. They want to know how many they
have all TOGETHER if Macy has 7 dolls and April has 3 dolls.
So class now individually go through each step we just learned and solve the problem.
At this point of the lesson I will be walking around the room to see who struggles and needs
addition guidance while also noticing who has grasped the concept. I will also be answering
individual questions if they are needed. After the allotted time given to solve the problem I will

recollect the students attention to go over the word problem together in the steps that were taught
during teacher input.
On the same worksheet they are given five word problems to work through. The students will be
given 10 minutes to work on the worksheet. Before I let them begin I will read each word problem
as they follow along to make sure they understand all the words and what is being asked. Once the
allotted time is done I will ask the students to put it in their take home homework folder to
complete at home with a family members help if needed (a signature is required from whoever
helped them). They will then bring the worksheet back to class the next day to go over the answer.
To meet the objective the students need to make an 80% on the worksheet.
(At the end of the lesson before packing up the worksheet): Ask the students what did we learn in
Yesterdays math lesson? we learned how to solve word problems and how to find word hints to
help us determine it is addition.
