Shading with Graphite: Spheres

Topic: Shading Spheres

Goal(s):
Students will understand how to shade three dimensional objects to change shape into
form.
Students will know vocabulary pertaining to value such as light source, cast shadow,
highlight, midtone, and core shadow
Objective(s):
Students will identify light sources, cast shadows, and different values from the value
scale.
Students will use prior knowledge of shading and value scales to correctly shade a
sphere using graphite.

Paper, sketchbooks, ebony pencils, kneaded erasers, PowerPoint/ projector screen,
instruction sheet

Instructional Procedures
Review:
What is value?
What is a value scale?
What is the purpose of a value scale?
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
Use the presentation to review value scale then introduce new vocabulary.
Practice identifying and using terms.
Pass out instruction sheet.
Have students label the right page in their sketchbook Sphere Practice, date it, and tape
the instruction sheet on the opposite left hand page.
Have students draw a six inch circle with a compass if available (or trace tape).
Students will shade the core value using value #5, until it is the shape of a crescent
moon. In terms of time, start the crescent at 12 oclock and end it at 4 oclock.
Make sure students know to gradate the circle (not stepped like the one on the
instructions).
Once the core shadow is complete, the negative space left not shaded inside the
sphere should be the shape of a smaller circle.
Students will then shade the mid values of #4 and #3 in a circular direction until a small
circle is left in the upper right corner of the sphere. Students should always shade in the
direction that follows the contour of the shape. Students will lightly shade a #2 value in a
complete circle, which gradates to a highlight in the center (about the size of a nickel).
Students will shade a cast shadow at the bottom of the sphere on the opposite side of
the highlight. They will start with a #6 value and gradate out from the bottom of the
sphere to a #2 value. Note: The shape of the sphere is rounded, so the cast shadow
must be rounded also.)

Formative Check (ongoing or specific):


Walk around to make sure students are shading correctly.
Reteach (alternative used as needed):
If students need individual help, demonstrate one on one how to shade and where to
put the values
Closure:

Hold up some students work who have done a good job to use as examples and review.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation:

Students will be graded based on their finished spheres based on how well they
shaded.

ESL and Special Ed students will have directions repeated to them and a one on one
demonstration.
