Have class sitting at the carpet. Show them the
chrysanthemum plant. Explain to them that this plant is going
to be very special. It will stay in the classroom and need lots of
love and attention to survive. It is in our room for a very
special reason, and it has to do with the book, Leo the Late
Bloomer.

Learning Activity #4

Learning Activity #5

Body
Read the story, Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus. Discuss
what it is about. Some of you know your letters and numbers
already; some of you can read. Others are still learning. We
are all different.
Show them how the flowers are in different stages of bloom and
explain what that means. Explain that the students are all like
the chrysanthemum, and they all bloom at their own rates, in
their own time. This makes everyone special and unique.
These words will be repeated throughout the coming weeks.
Show children the badges/stickers that they will earn when they
show me that they have learned something new. Show the
flower on the board with their laminated nameplates that they
made. At the beginning of each week, the flower will be
completely bare, symbolizing the need to bloom, or learn
something new. Explain that each time someone blooms, I will
move their nameplate into a place around the flowers center
and give them a blooming badge. We will celebrate these
names at the end of the week and cheer for them. (An attempt
will be made to move as many children to the center by the
end of the week as possible).

Time

Students will cut out flower petals and pots, placing one letter
of their name on each petal. Students will choose their own
color petals, and each will look unique, symbolizing their
individual identities. All pieces must be glued together. These
will be showcased at the Kindergarten meet the teacher
meeting this evening.. Students will read a book on the carpet
until everyone is finished.
Calendar time: Students will count the days of September,
repeat the date, learn the days of the week, determine the
weather and season, and count the days in school.
