Case 5: #2 Cyberbullying
The case study that was given to my group revolved around the issue of cyberbullying,
whos responsibility it is to monitor the behavior, and how to prevent some of the outcomes that
come along with it. The first question has many parts talking about who should do what and
where does the responsibility lie. Personally, I think that both parents and teachers should work
collaboratively to monitor and correct this behavior. In this day in age where technology is
expanding and ubiquitous, it is important that at home children are being monitored and at school
teachers should monitor students. The responsibility to fix cyberbullying doesnt rest just on one
group of people. As I mentioned before, it is a collaborative effort that has to be made by both
the parents of the children and the teacher working together. This way, the children has two
support systems. I say that they should work together because I have seen both situations with
cyberbullying: either the teacher doesnt care, or the parent doesnt care. When that happens, the
situation doesnt get solved and can sometimes get worse. I think that both sides should work at
helping the student cope with this issue.
I think that in some situations, the issues could have been solved. If both the parents and
teachers cared as much about the issue as the student, then it could have been resolved. However,
in some certain situations, the issue couldnt be resolved and no one could be held accountable
because there wasnt a law in place. Those kinds of situations are extremely upsetting and
unfortunate because it seems like cyberbullying isnt taken seriously until someones life is
taken. Now, there are laws that hold people accountable for cyberbullying. If those had been in
place earlier, then maybe some lives could have been saved.
Educators do have a responsibility when it comes to cyberbullying. As I stated before,
technology is everywhere, including in the classroom. Teachers should be aware of what their
students are doing whenever theyre using technology. In addition, teachers need to be a support
system for students who have been victims of cyberbullying. It needs to be taken seriously and
treated as an important issue. Cyberbullying shouldnt be ridden off as something that kids do
because theyre just kids. Teachers should talk about the issues that cyberbullying can cause in
the classroom. Its necessary that teachers let their students know what kinds of punishments
come with cyberbullying and why its important that they dont participate in this issue. To
overcome the issue, teachers should help students who are victims of cyberbullying and take the
issue seriously. Teachers should also let parents know if cyberbullying is happening with their
child and to tell them about the severity of the issue at hand so parents know that its an
important issue. I personally dont think that the affordance of technology has drawbacks. I think
that having access to so much technology at once provides seemingly unlimited resources that
can benefit both teachers and parents. With anything, there will be issues. It just depends on
whos going to take responsibility and whos going to try and resolve the issue. It also depends
on if the issue is being taken seriously or not.
