Speech #2

Yuliya Grebneva
Good morning everyone.
Intro
I.

Before we begin, let me ask you few questions.

1. How many of you have already had your morning coffee today?
2. How many cups do you usually drink a day?
a. 1
b. 3 5
3. Now, raise your hand if you slept 8-9 hours last night.
a. 6 7 hours
b. Less than 6 hours

If you sleep less than 8 hours, you are sleep deprived.

II.

Thesis: sleep deprivation negatively affects college students.

Ethos: I built my research upon Dr. Brett Becks book The World of Psychological
Science. If you had General Psychology with Dr. Beck, you know who Im talking about. I
also used some books such as The Brain: A Beginner's Guide, Human Psychology, and some
online recourses.
III.
IV.

Purpose: The purpose of my speech is to inform you about the importance of healthy
sleep and also give you some tips on how to sleep right.
Preview: Over those 5-6 minutes Ill tell you about statistics, energy drinks college
students consume, impact of sleep deprivation on our health, how our brains work
during sleep and share with you some techniques of how to sleep right.

Comment [Y1]: This is a speech that I were to

deliver in front of my classmates.
Our professor talked to us about classic rhetoric and
its features.
My goal was to structure my expository/
informational (genre) speech and orally deliver it,
without reading, so thats rhetoric in use like the
ancients used it :D
Comment [Y2]: The engagement part of the
Framework. I am engaging my audience right from
the beginning & using responses I got to connect
them with the info I am about to deliver.

Comment [Y3]: Herere logos & pathos, which

will be further reinforced (Fleming tells us that the
main goal of rhetoric was to move the audience).
We are sharing a common understanding of value
of sleep problem (as qtd in Fleming).
Comment [Y4]: I am super-positive that I had
this thesis right from the start because I knew my
topic & I knew the result of sleep deprivation. So
far, traditional start :D
Anson describes traditional pedagogy, practitioners
of which make students start with the thesis and
stick to it, which I totally did :D
Comment [Y5]: Here I explicitly establish my
ethos (Fleming) without beating around the bush
through hitting logos.
That came into play after I was pretty much done
writing the speech (non-linear writing).
Comment [Y6]: Exigency, or a requirement
(Flower&Hayes mention the word in Cognition of
Discovery).

Body
I.

First, lets look at statistics.

a. At least 71% of adults report being sleep deprived, many report one or
more sleep problems each week, there has been a 60-80% increase in
prescriptions for sleep-related difficulties since 2001, high school and college
students are walking zombies, says Dr. Beck in his book.

Comment [Y7]: Numbers and stats: logos.

Comment [Y8]: Pathos because its funny :D

b. There was a study found online in the Journal of Adolescent Health, which I

found on Medical News Today website, where 1,125 students participated. It was
found that
i. Only 30% of students sleep required 89 hours
ii. 20 % of students stay up all night at least once a month
iii. 35 % stay up until 3 a.m. at least once a week.
iv. 12% of poor sleepers miss class three or more times a month or fall asleep
in class.
The consumption of energy drinks increased greatly.
i. The study on energy drinks and college students, published in the
Nutrition Journal, suggests that
1. 51% of young people participated in the study (it was about 500),
admitted to have more than one energy drink a month.
2. It is also important to note that 53% of the energy drink users were
female, and 42% male.
As its been said, sleep deprivation negatively affects us.
i. In one of the books I mentioned earlier, I found that over the last hundred
years the night time sleep reduced by 1.5 hour. Many young people feel
sleepy during the day.
ii. Dr. Beck says that Micro-sleeps are brief periods of unintended sleep that
can be deadly. Many more people die every year from sleep-related causes
than died from the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
iii. "DRIVING DROWSY IS THE SAME AS DRIVING DRUNK. You
are a huge danger to yourself and others. It appears that in terms of
driving, the deleterious effects of bad sleep could be reduced by nearly
50% just by taking a 10-20 minute afternoon nap.
iv. According to recent statistics, there are approximately 200,000 motor
vehicle accidents a year due to sleep issues resulting in
1. 15,000 deaths and 71,000 injuries.
2. There were a total of 2996 deaths from the September 11th World
Trade Center/Pentagon terrorist bombings.
So how do our brains work during sleep?
i. In the Human Psychology book I found that brain as a whole doesnt rest
during sleep, however there is a reorganization of neuronal activity is
going on.
ii. REM (rapid eye movement) occurs after 90 minutes of sleep and lasts
approximately 510 minutes. Dr. Beck says, Typically, individuals
report dreaming about something that happened during the day if they are
awakened at this point. You go through about 4-6 cycles of REM

Comment [Y9]: I had to identify my sources

during the speech in order to be more credible
(They Say/ I Say) = backing of an argument (see
Fleming, 257).
Ties in with The Framework: curiosity (research),
persistence (research + preparations = time
consumed), responsibility (giving credit to works of
others).

Comment [Y10]: A huge PATHOS blow here. I

remember, I was amazed, so as my audience. Back
to Fleming & the goal of rhetoric to affect the
audience.

Comment [Y11]: Flower & Hayes would say that

I am affecting the [listener] here. Am I building
meaning? yes I am.

Comment [Y12]: Rhetorical Question.

V.

sleep during the evening, lasting a total of 90-120 minutes (memory tip:
the length of a good movie).
So here are some behavioral strategies for healthy sleeping.
i. You have to establish a regular sleep cycle, which takes weeks, says Dr.
Beck.
ii. You cannot catch up on sleep!
iii. It is important to go to bed at the same time but more importantly to rise at
the same time.
iv. Dont sleep in, especially on weekends I know, right? If you are
extremely tired, take a nap later.
v. You can also make your bedroom comfy: quiet, dark, cool/warm
whatever you prefer.
vi. Take a warm bath or a shower.
vii. Limit TV and clocks.

Conclusion
In conclusion, heres a secret to life for you sleep. The results of sleep are:

50% increase in viral immunity

It predicts longevity
25% increase in productivity
Lowered obesity (1lb/week)
Improved sports.

So to take or not to take a nap is up to you.

Thank you.

Comment [Y13]: This probably had to be APA.

On the other hand, the Professor, probably, told us
he didnt care whether it is APA or MLA.
