Goal(s): TLW learn how to add a multiple of 10 with one-digit numbers.

Time Estimate: 1 hour

Objective(s):
TLW examine the sum of a multiple of 10 and a one-digit and two-digit numbers with the use of
an ten frames.
TLW demonstrate the sum of a multiple of 10 and a one-digit and two-digit numbers with the use
of base-ten blocks.
TLW calculate the sum of a multiple of 10 and a one-digit and two-digit numbers with the use of
an interactive 100 chart.
TEKS: 1.3.A
Materials/Resources/Technology needs: base-ten blocks, 10 frames, white boards, dry erase
markers, 100 charts, smartboard,

Instructional Procedures
Focusing Event: The teacher will say, When we solve problems we want them to be accurate,
but also solved as quickly as possible. The teacher will relate it to the number of the day. Then
she will tell them thats what they are going to work on: adding tens. She will then show them 2
examples of the beginning of the year assessment test they took that had those type of
questions and tell them that if they know how to add ten with different strategies that are quick,
then it will be easier to do.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

The teacher will show the addition symbol and ask students if they know what that is
then she will put it together with ten to show that today we will be working on adding ten
to numbers.
The teacher will use an interactive 100 chart on the smartboard to demonstrate adding
by tens. She will ask a few questions and call on students to solve the problems. They
will all use their white boards to show in numeral form what they are solving. Then, the
teacher will use magnetic ten frames on the white board and will repeat the same
process. Finally, the teacher will pull up the base-ten interactive tool on the smartboard

to demonstrate a third way to add tens.

Students will make 3 rotations around the room. The teacher will make sure to explain
instructions and demonstrate each rotation before having the students complete it. One
rotation will have them use base-ten blocks to add a multiple of 10 with one-digit and
two-digit numbers. They will use their white boards to demonstrate what they did in
numeral form, such as 10+4=14 is what would be on their white board. The second
rotation will have them use 100 charts to add a multiple of 10 with one-digit and two-digit
numbers, and they will also have their white boards to demonstrate what they did in
numeral form. The third rotation will have them use ten frames to add a multiple of 10
with one-digit and two-digit numbers, and they will also have their white boards to
demonstrate what they did in numeral form.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific):

Students will work on their TX Go Math textbook to complete worksheet 3.1. The
teacher will demonstrate a few examples and complete the H.O.T questions with
them. Then, students who are below level and on level will complete the
worksheet independently.
o Students who are above level will complete a different worksheet that is
more challenging to fit their needs and allowed to use 100 charts, ten
frames, and base-ten blocks.
When students complete their work they will be given interactive worksheets
(involves cutting, pasting, coloring) that reviews the previous lesson according to
their math level.
o Below level: complete worksheet to show the number that comes before
and add 10 and allowed to use 100 charts, ten frames, and base-ten
blocks.
o On level: complete worksheet to order numbers from least to greatest and
add 10 and allowed to use 100 charts, ten frames, and base-ten blocks.
o Above level: complete worksheet to order numbers from greatest to least
and add 10 and allowed to use 100 charts, ten frames, and base-ten
blocks.

Reteach (alternative used as needed):

Use interactive TX Go Math video that goes through the same lesson with
interactive smart board activities throughout the video.

Closure: The teacher will return to the assessment questions used for the focusing event and
now have them solve them. She will then ask what is something that they learned about adding
tens.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation: End of unit test.

Modifications/Notes:
Students will receive different worksheets to complete according to their math levels that were
explained above. (all above level students are GT students)
SpEd/ELL: give sheet with vocabulary terms, allow them to work with partners as needed, and
give one to one assistance.
GT: can create word problems that consist of adding 10.
