Must Know:
Gifted Males are:
Sensitive
Intelligent
Detail oriented
Creative
Needing to explore multiple activities
Underrepresented in African American communities
General Description:
The gifted male can be found in all areas of society and
is more prevalent within the African American community.
Research has shown that boys admit to feeling they
should hide their intelligence. Research also shows
there are definite developmental criteria that needs to be
recognized and addressed in these boys from an early
age. Parents and the educational system must take
steps to ensure their needs are being met. When the
necessary steps are not taken this group of boys can
and will go underrepresented. They will underachieve
and sadly, not be identified or be mislabeled.
Without nurturing, their talents will go undeveloped and
unrecognized. Gifted boys have many challenges that
affect their giftedness. They have to deal with societal
pressures and stereotypes that have an effect on their
learning and socialization.
Boys this age start to reject authority, deviate from
things they normally find interesting and become noticeably restless. This is especially true for gifted males.
It is important for teachers to educate in a way that challenges and engages this group of students in an active
way. Parents must support their children without pressuring for performance.
