Year 3 Unit of Inquiry 3 Overview

Phonics, Spelling and Vocabulary

Use a dictionary or electronic means to find the spelling and meaning of words.

Grammar and Punctuation


Reading

Identify pronouns and understand their function in a sentence.


Collect examples of nouns, verbs and adjectives, and use the terms appropriately.

Maintain accurate use of capital letters and full stops in showing sentences.
Continue to improve consistency in the use of tenses.
Ensure grammatical agreement of pronouns and verbs in using standard English.

Fiction and Poetry

Sustain the reading of 48 and 64 page books, noting how a text is organised into sections or chapters.

NUMBER
Numbers and the number system

Understand what each digit represents in three-digit numbers and partition into hundreds, tens and units

Find 1, 10, 100 more/less than two- and three-digit numbers

Multiply two-digit numbers by 10 and understand the effect

Round two-digit numbers to the nearest 10 and round three-digit numbers to the nearest 100

Place a three-digit number on a number line marked off in multiples of 100

Place a three-digit number on a number line marked off in multiples of 10

Compare three-digit numbers, use < and > signs, and find a number in between

Order two- and three-digit numbers


Calculation
Addition and subtraction

Add and subtract 10 and multiples of 10 to and from two- and three-digit numbers

Add 100 and multiples of 100 to three-digit numbers

Use the = sign to represent equality, e.g. 75 + 25 = 95 + 5


MEASURE
Length, mass and capacity

Choose and use appropriate units and equipment to estimate, measure and record measurements

Know the relationship between kilometres and metres, metres and centimetres, kilograms and grams, litres and millilitres

Read to the nearest division or half division, use scales that are numbered or partially numbered

Use a ruler to draw and measure lines to the nearest centimetre

Solve word problems involving measures

Using techniques and skills in solving mathematical problems

Estimate and approximate when calculating, and check working

Art

Music
In Music students will be singing 2 songs connected to
HABITATS & ECOSYSTEMS focusing on the Music Elements
of Duration (staying time to a steady beat) and Pitch (singing in
tune). Students will also continue to develop their Music
notation skills with weekly lessons on the Glockenspiels and
Xylophones.
PE
During the third unit of inquiry students in Physical Education
will focus on athletics and gymnastics related movements such
as running, jumping, throwing, balancing and performing basic
movement patterns. Students will work to improve their gross
and fine motor skills and link movements to create basic
sequences. Improved coordination, self-esteem and confidence
are key growth areas students can gain from this unit.

Focus: Space and Form


Central Idea: Artists use a variety of methods to create the
illusion of depth in their work.

Vietnamese National Curriculum (VNC)

In unit 3, year 3 VNC will be continued on the 3 topics:


Teacher/ grandparents / parents. Through these students
will have a chance to learn new vocabulary, new
grammatical points, how to write a paragraph as well as
review phonics. Story about jobs in the community

Vietnamese Language and Culture (VLC)


Mandarin
Y3 will learn about:

animals and pets in China

describe the animals and express ones likes/dislikes

learn to talk about ones pet

write characters

*Language focus: FAMILY


Year 3 will continue their next VLC topic with Family. During
VLC lessons, the students will learn basic vocabularies
related to nuclear family (ba, m, anh, ch, em) and their
extended family (ng,b). They will also learn new sentence
structures to introduce their family and express their feelings
to their family members.
