knowledge and ability to develop and deliver health promotion
and disease prevention programs to facilitate healthy
communities
During this course, we had one major assignment in which we
were asked to assess a specific population for a learning need
and create a teaching plan for that population. I chose 10-16
year old boys from the Maritime provinces in Canada.
My learning experience came from the need to formulate a
teaching strategy to such a young group of males. I had to

embarrassed or less focused on my teaching.
I used the Potter and Perry Nursing Fundamentals textbook as
well as Stanhope and Lancaster Community Health Nursing
Textbook in order to gage where the students learning levels
would be and what would be the most beneficial way to teach
these students.
Through this assignment, I learned a solid theoretical basis of
community teaching and had experience utilizing that basis in
order to teach a group of children. I feel as though I have a
better understanding of the work and care that is required in

Community Health Nurse to introduce child/youth wellness
programs, community wellness, and even injury prevention
programs in a community.
This is extremely beneficial in order to maximize my
experience and understanding of each different branch of
nursing. Although I wish I was truly able to teach a group and
enact my teaching with a true group of children, I do not see

I would rate my proficiency in this competency as Good. I feel

I have a good understanding of the competency in theory and
in scenarios as well. I do not feel as though I am Excellent
because of the lack of true world experience but I feel as
though I have a good understanding of what it would involve
and what would be required of me.
To achieve a Good proficiency rating, I followed my course
closely, I created flashcards on everything I did not know and
was not sure of. I completed the practice quizzes and
assignments. I looked into different community nursing
forums on public health teaching and asked questions to
student who had previously taken the course when I had
questions relating to assignments.
I am excited to apply this learning in my nursing practice as I
hope to work with the public one day, whether it be in a
hospital or public health setting. I have a passion for people
and for health, so I feel this learning experience will be vital to
my nursing practice in order to ensure my patients, families,
and members of the community can be empowered with
knowledge in order to take control of their health.
