English Language Arts

Reflection
As a future educator, having content knowledge of reading, writing, speaking and
listening is fundamental for teachers to teach the English Language Arts. In order to teach
the English Language Arts, it is important to implement new learning content like reading
informational and literature texts, writing narratives and writing opinions on topics to
help students think and express themselves through writing. In addition, teachers will
need to be able to engage students in literature by activating students passion and build
stamina. As a future educator, teachers need to know and teach comprehension strategies,
vocabulary and text organization.
My English classes have taught me the basic foundations of writing. I have
learned about useful language and grammatical concepts like learning the functions of
nouns, verbs and adjectives. In addition, my English 487 and LBS 355 classes have
taught me how vocabulary knowledge includes understanding the parts of words and how
they are combined to form new words. My English classes have helped me understand
how to teach students the foundations of reading and writing, as well as to help them
build the skills they need to succeed in English. As a future educator, I feel well prepared
in teaching reading comprehension. I am prepared to show the students how to think
actively and review content as it relates to what they have just learned and what they
already know. After reading a text, I would ask students to answer questions based on
information that can be found in the text in order for me to assess students reading
comprehension. I can help young and struggling readers to succeed and help them focus

on what they need to learn. Writing is the area where I feel less prepared. To improve my
writing skills I plan to practice by using strategies that writers need to present their points
of view, such as traits like organization, word choice and ideas.
My artifact is a childrens grammar book project from my English 487 class. In
this grammar book I had to illustrate and bind a text, which highlighted a specific
grammatical concept. To illustrate a specific grammatical concept I choose to teach
adjectives through a simple sea life story. My grammar book project demonstrates my
understanding of the different grammatical features of English like nouns, verbs,
adjectives and adverbs, which connects to the Grade 2,3,4 English Language Arts
standards. The grammar book I designed also demonstrates my ability of understanding
how to identify vocabulary and grammatical structures in different reading texts. I learned
to highlight a specific language features that support meaning like punctuation,
vocabulary and sentence structure. I learned how to use content of lessons to introduce
new grammar concepts and look for repeated patterns that occur naturally in textbooks
and lessons. As a future teacher, I can connect different strategies to teach lessons that
introduce new grammar concepts and other content of lessons by using stories or other
methods to introduce grammar to children.
