CLOVE HITCH
For a rope under strain
This method is preferred by
sailors for mooring a drifting
boat.
Method
Take the rope in both hands
(1). Jerk the rope with the left
hand to form a loop around
the bollard (2). The resulting
formation will be under
tension (3). Take hold of the
end and make another loop,
dropping that over the bollard
(4, 5, 6). Hold the end tight
and the knot will tighten on

CLOVE HITCH
The double clove hitch is
used when the knot is to be
used for a long time without
being checked, particularly
when mooring a boat toa
quay.
Method
Allowing along enough end
to make as many turns as
required for safety, make a
loop with the end underneath
and drop it over the post (1).
Repeat this operation as many
times as desired (2).
