Title of Lesson: Say No to Stress

Learning Objectives/Goals
1. GOAL:
2. To educate the audience on stress management and its usefulness as it relates to a healthy
lifestyle
3. LEARNER OUTCOME(S):

After discussing examples of things that create stress in college students lives, students will
be able to identify one thing that causes the greatest amount of stress in their lives.
(Cognitive/Identifying)
After discussing stress management techniques, students will be able to identify one tactic
they can incorporate into their daily lives that will reduce stress. (Cognitive/Identifying)
After identifying the cause of stress in their lives, students generate ways they can prevent
stress in the future. (Affective/Creating)
4. Assessment
Before:
o Assess relevance of topic for audience and their prior knowledge by asking probing
questions:
By a show of hands, how many of you are stressed right now?
Do you feel like you have your stress under control?
If you do, what are some ways that you cope with stress?
During:
o Assess knowledge during by asking leading questions:
How could stress affect the quality of your life?
Do you think stress is a serious health issue, and why?
After:
o Assess knowledge after by having the students implement what they learn by
designing a system that they can use that organizes their life and prevents stress, and
also includes a road map of tactics to use while under stress
5. Lesson Structure and Procedures
I. Anticipatory Set/Prior Knowledge:

A. Provide an intro to lesson:

Welcoming introduction of teacher

Did you know Americans are more stressed today than they were three decades ago?
B. Assess relevance of topic for audience and their prior knowledge by asking probing
questions:
i.
By a show of hands, how many of you are stressed right now?
ii.
Do you feel like you have your stress under control?
iii.
If so, what are some ways you cope with stress?
II. Advanced organizers:

Outline lesson objects
ii.
Today we are going to be talking about stress. Stress is inevitable while in college.
Being students, Im sure you experience stress on a daily basis.
iii.
Because it is a part of life, it is important to learn how to prevent stress levels from
rising too high, and to learn ways to decompress, and reduce stress. (Affective)
iv. Today we are going to learn how stress affects our health mentally, physically, and
emotionally. (Cognitive)
v. You are going to identify what causes stress in your lives

After that we are going to discuss stress management techniques and put some of
these techniques into action. (Psychomotor)
vii.
Last you will get to develop a system that will help prevent stress. This guide will
help you Say No to Stress, and also will contain tactics that you can use when you
are under stress.

Sequence of Instructional Strategies:
A. Activity 1: Lecture/Discussion
How Stress Affects our health: Mentally, Physically, and Emotionally
MI: Verbal/Linguistic

Materials Needed:
1. Outline of speaking points
i.

Procedure
Give lecture and hit these main points
1. Stress and mental health
a) Anxiety
b) Depression
c) Quality of life
2. How stress physically affects the body
a) Fight or flight mode
b) When you feel threatened, your nervous system responds by releasing stress
hormones (Adrenaline and cortisol)
d) Higher blood pressure, tight muscles
3. Stress on emotional well being
a) Mood
b) Relationships
c) Motivation
4. Following lecture, encourage students to discuss ways that stress affects their lives
relating to these three main points
a) What feelings do you experience when you are under stress?
b) Do you notice a difference in your body?

c) How can stress affect you emotionally?


B. Activity 2: Lecture/Discussion
How To Cope With Stress: Stress Management Techniques
MI: Verbal/Linguistic/Intrapersonal
Blooms Taxonomy: Cognitive/Affective/Listing
Materials Needed:
i. Procedure
1. Give lecture and provide examples of ways to cope with stress
2. Ask students of ways that they like decompress when they are stressed
3. Examples:
a) Read: non fiction, something motivational
b) Physical activity: movement, running, biking, playing sports, yoga, walking
c) Music
d) Hobbies: crafts, cards, cooking, collecting things
e) Movies
f) Speak to friends or family
C. Activity 3: Try New Stress Management Techniques
Meditation
MI: Body/Kinesthetic/Intrapersonal
Blooms Taxonomy: Psychomotor/Applying
Materials Needed:
1. Timer
2. Relaxing music

Procedure
1. Explain what meditation is, and how this technique can be used to manage stress
2. Explain what the students are going to do and how long they are going to
meditate (3 minutes)
3. Have students sit in a comfortable seat, with a straight back and their hands on
their lap
4. Play relaxing music
5. Tell them to focus on their breath
6. Time the mediation
7. After time is up, discuss the activity. Focus on feelings before and after
meditation
E. Activity 5: Create a plan that organize daily activities to prevent stress

Procedure
1. Explain activity
a) We are going to create a plan that contains systems and tactics in place to
help prevent stress
b) This plan will help you evaluate what things in your life cause stress so that
it can be prevented
c) The plan also will aid in evaluation of stress management tactics
2. Reasoning for activity
a) Best way to reduce stress is to prevent it in the first place
b) Setting systems in place will keep you organized, which can make life easier

c) For those times when you are stressed, it is important to have a plan of action
in place. This will make managing stress levels easier, and more effective.

Give students 10 minutes to fill out form
Discuss students answers
Ask students what they put on their plan
Ask what techniques they are going to use to manage stress

III. Review of Lesson


A. I hope you learned more about stress today and ways to prevent and handle it

First we discussed how stress affects our health mentally, physically, and emotionally.

B. I hope you learned something here today that you can apply into your lives that will make
life a little easier. With the end of the semester coming up and holidays beginning, this can be a
stressful time of year. These strategies can be applied at school and even outside of school.
