entity.Thepreferredvalueistheserialnumberstring
actuallyprintedonthecomponentitself(ifpresent).
Onthefirstinstantiationofanphysicalentity,thevalue
ofentPhysicalSerialNumassociatedwiththatentityisset
tothecorrectvendorassignedserialnumber,ifthis
informationisavailabletotheagent.Ifaserialnumber
isunknownornonexistent,theentPhysicalSerialNumwill
be
settoazerolengthstringinstead.
Notethatimplementationsthatcancorrectlyidentifythe
serialnumbersofallinstalledphysicalentitiesdonot
needtoprovidewriteaccesstotheentPhysicalSerialNum
object.Agentswhichcannotprovidenonvolatilestorage
fortheentPhysicalSerialNumstringsarenotrequiredto
implementwriteaccessforthisobject.
Noteveryphysicalcomponentwillhaveaserialnumber,
or
evenneedone.Physicalentitiesforwhichtheassociated
valueoftheentPhysicalIsFRUobjectisequalto'false(2)'
(e.g.,therepeaterportswithinarepeatermodule),donot
needtheirownuniqueserialnumber.Anagentdoesnot
have
toprovidewriteaccessforsuchentities,andmayreturna
zerolengthstring.
Ifwriteaccessisimplementedforaninstanceof
entPhysicalSerialNum,andavalueiswrittenintothe
instance,theagentmustretainthesuppliedvalueinthe
entPhysicalSerialNuminstance(associatedwiththesame
physicalentity)foraslongasthatentityremains
instantiated.Thisincludesinstantiationsacrossall
reinitializations/rebootsofthenetworkmanagement
system,
includingthoseresultinginachangeofthephysical
entity'sentPhysicalIndexvalue."
