Reading Response #1: Exploring Genre
A. Writers voice is the writing style of an author. Its what theyre known for writing
and how they stand out.
B. - It is important to write in different genres because the more youre familiar with
them, the easier it will be to make decisions about what kinds of topics to write about
and how you should portray yourself as a writer to your readers. It is also important to
know what counts as good ideas and evidence in a paper, what kinds of
organizational patterns and formatting conventions you are supposed to use, and even
kinds of styles are appropriate.
- In school and my career, I will be writing essays, lab reports, plays, journals,
sending emails, making posters, and maybe more.
C. In my major, Theatre, we really dont have a specific style of writing because theres
so many for us. If were writing a normal essay, most likely MLA and APA. For
plays, the possibilities are endless.
D. A rhetorical situation is the context of a rhetorical act made up of an issue, an
audience, and a set of constraints.
1. The genre that I most often write in is essay.
2. - My purpose in my writing is to always enlighten and give people a feeling of
who I am. Im very quiet and reserved, so I feel like its my time to shine when
writing.
- I always think of my audience. I never want people to think I uneducated about
whatever Im talking about and I usually always have my friends, family, teacher,
etc. look over my work before I completely finish it.
3. For evidence, I always search my topic on Google and go from there when I find
4.

what can help me out.

I do use pre-writing techniques. I usually have to put on music, have a snack,
look up things online that will help me have prior information, and make sure I
have a friend around also to keep me motivated and focused.

5. - In this class, I just want to learn how to be a better writer. I know I have what it
takes to be an exceptional writer, I just dont have the trust and control in my
writing. I feel like I have to live up to other peoples standards, and that puts a lot
pressure on me. I really want to learn how to just put my foot down and write
how I want to write.
- I honestly just hope I get an A in this class. I do like to write and all, but it just
takes so long and Im a procrastinator. Every time I think Im doing amazing in a
class, I never really am. I know Im pretty good at writing, but what if Im not
good enough for my professor? What if she tries to just degrade my writing? Ill
just try to make the most out of it, get an A, and hopefully be an amazing writer.
-- These paragraphs differ because how I speak to you is what I really want to do,
but how I speak to my friend is how I feel l would do. On the outside I can have
so much confidence about things, but on the inside, Im constantly freaking out.
Its something Ive been trying to work on.
