Halloween!)
The teacher will ask, What holiday are we celebrating later this month?
(Student response: Thanksgiving!)
Today when I say, Where are my Turkeys? I need you to respond Gobble, Gobble.
Lets try it! (*repeat until mastered).
Take a moment to share your favorite Thanksgiving food with a neighbor.
(As students chat make sure the smartboard is ready to use).
!Where are my Turkeys? Gobble, Gobble
Three students will share their favorite Thanksgiving food.
Development (4 minutes)
When we read Arthurs Thanksgiving today we are going to be looking for some very
important story elements. Everyone hold up 5 fingers (like we are going to high-five each
other).
When we read a story we always look for 5 important pieces of information:
Who is the story about? What is the story about? When is the story written? Where does
the story take place? Why did the author write this story?
*Write the 5Ws on the smartboard.
As we read today I need you to think of these 5 important story elements so we can highfive this story after we read!
Guided Practice (8 minutes):
Read the story, stop to ask engaging questions that touch the 5Ws.
(Ex. Who else could Arthur ask? What will happen next (make predictions when the
turkey is behind the curtain, who could it be?))

Independent Practice/ Closure (14 minutes):

Gobble like a (quiet) turkey back to your seat. Show an example of an appropriate turkey
vs. an inappropriate turkey. Call quiet students first.
Handout Handprint worksheets.
!Where are my Turkeys? Gobble, Gobble
The teacher will explain that we are going to answer the questions we discussed earlier,
Who? What? When? Where? Why?
Please write the 5Ws above the fingers of your turkey.
Who? What? When? Where? Why? *Show example on smartboard.
1. The teacher will ask who is this story about?
A student volunteer will say Arthur and his friends.
2. The teacher will ask what takes place during the story? A student volunteer will say,
Arthur is the director of his school play. He has to be the Turkey in the play too.
3. The teacher will ask when does the story take place?
A student volunteer will say around Thanksgiving.
4. The teacher will ask where does the story take place?
A student volunteer will say at Arthurs school/house.
5. The teacher will ask why this story is written (to inform us, entertain, or persuade?
A student volunteer will say to entertain.
As you finish writing I am going to circulate the room and have you tell me the 5Ws that
we uncovered from Arthurs Thanksgiving. Once you say them you can high-five the
book (gently).
After the students have recited the 5Ws to the teacher they will have time to turn
their handprint into a Turkey. *Show an example on the smartboard.
Return the lead to Mrs. Amos.

VI. EVALUATION:
Formative: Call-and-response Where are my Turkeys? Gobble, Gobble. Also, the
teacher will circulate the room during independent practice checking for student
understanding. The teacher will walk around as the students are finishing and ask them
the 5Ws as they finish their hand and the teacher will give each student a high-five.
Summative: No summative assessment at this time.

VII. REFLECTION:
1.
Was the objective clearly met?
2.
Did the students stay engaged? At what point did they seems to lose interest?
3. What do I need to do differently during my next lesson?
