N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Corey Suzukawa Date of Activity: 9/11/15, 9/12/15 Faculty name: Mary
OConnel/Patty Goldsmith
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
The first professional activity I attended was Integrative Nursing in Action which was a series
of presentations held regarding alternative therapy to symptom management. This included
therapy in the form of music, reiki, and acupressure. The purpose of the presentations were to
educate and expand the knowledge of faculty and students about symptom management in
clinical and community-based settings. Each presentation yielded alternative ways to reduce
stress, pain, and a variety of other symptoms. As a student, my role in the professional activity
was to learn about these different methods so that I may be able to implement them in the future
as a nurse. The main lesson I learned about the presentations is that symptoms do not always
need to be treated pharmacologically with medications. I am believer in non-pharmacologic
methods to benefit patients, so the presentations were very stimulating and valuable as I begin
my career as a nurse. The second professional activity I participated in was a study organized by
the college of medicine, pharmacy, and public health designed to promote health education and
positive health outcomes for the community. The study takes place over the next year on various
Saturdays, and consists of a clinic to assist community members regarding their health. The day I
went was the first day of the study, so baseline measurements of their vital signs, blood sugar,
weight, and past medical history were obtained. Students from the different medical schools were
each assigned a role, and I was responsible for taking the blood pressure of the participants.

There was also posters and tables filled with educational pamphlets and presentations available
to the participants.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The alternative therapy presentations were held at the College of Nursing and was four hours in
length. The clinic study was held at the Fred Archer Community Center and was five hours in
length.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
The value of the presentations were extremely valuable because as mentioned above, I am strong
believer in non-pharmacological methods to treat symptoms of patients. In particular I thought
learning about music therapy was very beneficial because it could be implemented easily in the
clinical setting and could be done by anyone. For instance, playing a patients favorite music
during their hospital stay could yield positive results and is non-invasive. The clinic study was
valuable because it allowed myself to work alongside medical students, pharmacy students, and
public health students using a team approach. Nurses often have to work with physicians and
pharmacy in the clinical setting so it was great practice.
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I would strongly recommend both professional experiences in the future. The presentations are
valuable for all nurses and is effective in maintaining interest throughout the four hours. The
clinic study is great to be a part of and looks good on a resume. It was just unfortunate that I
could not attend some Saturdays due to clinical, and there are some clinic days after I graduate.
Brochure or proof of attendance obtained? Yes. Signature on validation of clinical hours form
