Introduction

1.1

Problem Specification

Nowadays with increasing percentage of distributed generation using in the power

system, the power grid is changing from vertical to horizontal configuration. The power
do not flow on only one direction as it was but in both directions. Therefore, protection
coordination might suffer due to connection of DG. Other issues such as changing in
short circuit power then changing in fault current level, reduce reach of impedance
relays, islanding and auto reclosing...[?]

1.2

Objectives and methodology

Main objective of this thesis is investigating the impacts of DG on the protection

schemes of test power network and propose the setting of protection to adapt with new
scenarios. Several tasks must be conduct to archive the objective.
1. Literature Review
- Review of fault analysis for power system, including short circuit calculation
methods.
- Review of power system, topology and distributed sources.
- Review of protection system, traditional protection schemes,
- Analysing the protection issues related to power network with presence of DG
- Determining the protection strategy.
2. Assessment Studies
- Definition of test network
- Modelling the traditional protective setting on the test network
- Modelling of the distribution sources
- Stability studies and impact of DG on overcurrent protection, modification is
proposed

1.3

Research questions and Hypothesis

How distributed generations effect the protection system ?

What are traditional protection schemes ?
How the distributed generation effect on those traditional protection schemes ?
How to improve it ?
Hypothesis:
1. With the presence of distributed generations the protection system
will not operate correctly.
2. The modification on protection system will require only changing setting of existing protective devices.
