Targeted Literacy Strategy or Skill: Beginning questioning
Grade level: 2nd
Objective: The student will be able to listen and categorize questions
to promote understanding.
Common Core State Standard/ PASS Standard: (We will use the CCSS App) CCSS RI.2.1
Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, and how to demonstrate understanding of key
details in a text.
Prior knowledge: (What students already know) Students should already know how to connect text
when reading to their background knowledge.
Observations/Rationale: (Before Lesson) What did you notice in your students work that let you
know this lesson was necessary?
I noticed that a lot of students would ask me questions about the books they were reading, when the
answers could be found in the books with further reading.
Materials Needed:
Lesson from (Name your source including page number) Strategies That Work by Stephanie Harvey
and Anne Goudvis page 112
Mentor Text: Charlie Anderson by Barbara Ambercrombie
Materials: Sticky notes and a writing utensil
Student Groups (whole/small group/partners): Together as a class read the book and discuss the
questions, but individually the students will create and write their own questions.
Mini Lesson Format:
Connect (AKA~ Anticipatory Set, Engagement/Pre-reading):
In our previous lesson where we shared our questions about our reading. Do you guys remember
how when we had a question we would put the letter A next to the question to remind us that we
found the answer? Well today we are going to work on categorizing our questions based on how we
discovered the answers to our questions. Charlie Anderson by Barbara Ambercrombie. As we read
the book I want you to write down the questions that you have.

Teach (Model/Explain)
I want everyone to look at the chart I have made. There are different categories that we will place
our questions in based on how the question was answered. A stands for questions that are
answered from the text. BK stands for a question was answered from someones background
knowledge. I stands for questions where the answer was inferred from the text. D stands for
questions that are answered through discussion. RS stands for questions that require further
research in order to be answered. C stands for questions that signal confusion. Now I want you
guys to focus on the book, and we will come back to the chart in a little bit. Lets start reading the
book. Okay so as soon as I look at the cover of the book I am automatically wonder who is Charlie
Anderson? So I am going to write my question on my sticky note (write who is Charlie Anderson?).
Now I am going to put this sticky note to the side and keep an eye out for the answer to the question

as we read. Continue reading the book. The answer to the question appears on the first page. I
have found the answer to my question, the text told me who Charlie Anderson is. So I am going to
write the letter that shows how the question was answered. Write the letter A, and then place it on
the chart in the correct category.

Active Engagement (AKA~ Check for Understanding: students try it out, teacher observes):
You guys will be writing your questions as I read the book. Pay close attention for the answers to
your questions. Finish reading the book. So would anyone like to share one of their questions?
Call on whomever raises their hand. Excellent question, how did you find the answer to the
question? Which letter do you think you should write on your sticky note? Why do you think that?
Would you like to come place your sticky note up on the chart? Use these questions for each
student that would like to share their question.

Students, today we learned how to ask questions and then categorize our questions based on how
we found the answer. In future readings, you can use this strategy to figure out answers to any
questions you have. I will leave this chart up so that anytime you find an answer to a question you
can place the question under how you discovered the answer.
