Week 1

Monday 3/7- Figurative Language


Students will do a review of figurative language focusing on simile, metaphor, and
personification. Handouts and worksheets will be given
o HOMEWORK: Read Speak pages 1-20 and complete double entry journal

Tuesday 3/8- Socratic Seminar #1


Students will participate in a Socratic seminar focusing on reading one from Speak.
Discussion questions must be answered with textual evidence. Double entry journals may
be used).
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 20-41 and double entry journal

Wednesday 3/9- Socratic Seminar #2

Students will participate in a Socratic seminar focusing on reading two from Speak.
Discussion questions must be answered with textual evidence. Double entry journals may
be used.
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 41-61 and complete double entry journal

Thursday 3/10- Poetry

Students will read a biography, Caged Bird, and Alone by Maya Angelou. Students
will analyze the poems and discuss their relationship and relevance to Speak.
o HOMEWORK: Read Im nobody! Who are you? and Elephant in the Room

Friday 3/11- Poetry Continued

Students will discuss I am nobody! Who are you? by Emily and Dickenson and
Elephant in the Room by Anonymous. Students will analyze the poems and discuss
their relation and relevance to Speak. Students will then write an I am poem.
o HOMEWORK: Finish I am poem and read Speak pgs. 61-80

Week 2
Monday 3/14- Symbolism
Students will draw a map of the social groups in Melindas school and will be asked to
assign a symbol to each group, using textual evidence to defend their choices.
o HOMEWORK: Symbolism worksheet, read Speak pgs. 80-100 and double entry
journal

Tuesday 3/15- Socratic Seminar #3


Students will participate in a Socratic seminar focusing on reading five from Speak.
Discussion questions must be answered with textual evidence. Double entry journals may
be used.
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 100-120 and double entry journal. Compile at least
five leveled questions for Wednesdays class

Wednesday 3/16- Socractic Seminar #4- Class Questions

Students will participate in a Socratic seminar focusing on reading six from Speak.
Students will use the questions they compiled for homework and will respond to the peers
using textual evidence. Double entry journals may be used.
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 120-141 and double entry journal

Thursday 3/17- Statistics and Services


Students will discuss reading seven from Speak and research assigned rape statistics, help
services, and awareness organizations. Students will discuss their findings with the class
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 141-160 and double entry journal.

Friday 3/18- Socratic Seminar #5


Students will participate in a Socratic seminar focusing on reading eight from Speak.
Discussion questions must be answered with textual evidence. Double entry journals may
be used).
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 160-180 and double entry journal

Week 3
Monday 3/21- Socratic Seminar #6
Students will participate in a Socratic seminar focusing on reading one from Speak.
Discussion questions must be answered with textual evidence. Double entry journals may
be used). Project assignment sheets will be distributed
o HOMEWORK: Speak pgs. 180-198 and double entry journal

Tuesday 3/22- Figurative Language


Students will discuss the end of the novel and complete a figurative language worksheet
focusing on the figurative language used throughout the novel. Students may ask
questions about the final projects.
o HOMEWORK: Finish worksheet and work on project

Wednesday 3/23- Final Project Work Day

Students will work on their final projects in the classroom.

Thursday 3/24- Final Project Work Day-Workshop


Students will work on their final projects in the classroom. Students may discuss their
projects with their peers. Peer groups may check written work for grammatical errors and
project work for clarity of ideas.

Friday 3/25- Final Project Due

Students will turn in their final projects by the end of class.
