Essential Question: Should airports in the United States be modeled after Israeli airports?
Working Thesis: Airports in the United States should be modeled after Israeli airports.
Revised Thesis: Airports in the United States should be modeled after Israeli airports because
their methods focus on the use of trained security personnel rather than machines.

In the article, Atlas describes the methods used by Israeli airports and how they differ
from the methods used in the United States. Israeli airports have an intimidating wall of security
that relies on humans more so than technology. Atlas has personally traveled and gone through
Israeli airports and discusses the questions the security agents ask travelers. The questions are
designed to trip up travelers and are used to detect any signs of nervous or suspicious behavior.
Atlas also describes how the techniques used in Israeli airports are not suitable for the United
States because Israel is relatively smaller, and having well-trained security personnel in airports
would be extremely expensive. Atlass article refutes my thesis that airports in the United States

should be modeled after Israeli airports because he believes that Israeli methods would be
difficult to implement in the United States.

Federman, Josef. "Stern Israeli Airport Security Measures Questioned." AP Top News Package
(2014): Points of View Reference Center. Web. 20 Oct. 2015.
In Federmans article, he discusses the strict security that is used in Israeli airports. After
September 11, 2001 airport security around the world became more strict and thorough. Israel is
known for having the best airport security in the world. Israel has experienced several terrorist
attacks. Israeli airports had to vamp up their security in order to keep passengers and the public
safe. However, many believe that Israel airports profiles passengers causes many of them to feel
discriminated against. Airport security should never degrade passengers. Federmans article
refutes my thesis because it believes that Israeli airport security is too invasive and does not
respect the privacy of passengers.

Gutmann, Stephanie. "US Airport Security Should Be Modeled on the Israeli Approach." US
Airport Security. Ed. Margaret Haerens and Lynn M. Zott. Detroit: Greenhaven

In Gutmanns article, she discusses the airport security she experienced when traveling
through Israeli airports security and praises their techniques. Gutmann stresses the importance of
actually understanding what the Israeli airport security does, rather than adding another layer of
security that is not effective. Israeli airport security personnel are trained to focus on observing
people and their actions. They will ask questions about the travelers visits to prolong contact.

Security personnel in Israeli airports do not just focus on repetitive searches, but they analyze
passengers as they answer the questions. Israeli airports will conduct more thorough searches on
luggage that has been out of passengers sights for any period of time. Gutmanns article supports
my thesis because it describes and explains the reasons why airports in the United States should
be modeled after airports in Israel.

Kerner, Antonina. "TSA Implements Israeli-Style Security In Boston." Human Events 67.28
(2011): 6. Academic Search Complete. Web. 20 Oct. 2015.
In Kerners article, she discusses the changes made to Boston airport security to mimic
airport security in Israeli airports. Trained TSA agents evaluate whether or not passengers a terror
threat based on their response to a series of questions. Security personnel ask questions like
Where have you been? and observe micro-expressions. Any suspicious passengers will be
pulled aside for further screening similar to the airports in Israel. Like several actions taken by
the TSA, the implementation of Israeli-style security in Boston created some controversy. Many
question whether or not the new security style will be effective. However, many are confident in
the Israeli security system because it is known to be the most effective in the world. Kerners
article supports my thesis because it provides an example of an airport in the United States that is
modeled after Israels airports.

Labov, Steven L. "Airport Security." U.S. Transportation Security Administration. 39. n.p.:
Mason Crest Publishers, 2003. Points of View Reference Center. Web. 20 Oct.

Labovs article describes airport security in the United States and the different methods it
uses to ensure safety in airports. The article explains the development of airport security and why

the TSA uses the methods that it does. Because of past security breaches and terrorist attacks, the
TSA has developed layers of security to prevent events like these from reoccuring. Labov
provides a list of certain items that travelers are not allowed to bring into the airport. He also
discusses the searches conducted on luggage. Labov also compares the TSA to foreign airports,
like Israel, which is known for having the best airport security. Labovs article supports my
thesis because he provides information on both Israels and the United States airports and
strongly agrees that Israeli airports are the most effective.

Taylor, Courteney L. "Touched By An Agent: Why The United States Should Look To The Rest
Of The World For A New Airport Security Scheme And Stop Using Full-Body
Scanners." Houston Journal Of International Law 35.2 (2013): 503-536.

Taylors article discusses the actions the United States has taken after the terrorist attack
on September 11, 2001. The United States began using new technologies to improve airport
security across the board after the terrorist attack. One of the many new technologies
implemented by the TSA, is body scanners. Unlike Israeli airports, the United States has become
dependent on the new technologies. Taylor believes that the United States should reduce the use
of body scanners in airports and use other methods of airport security that are implemented by
other countries. Taylors article supports my thesis that the United States should adopt a new
airport security system that is more effective and is used by other countries.
