Is Cyber-Bullying Really A Harmful Crime?
We play games, do research, listen to music, chat with friends and many more
things we do on the internet. How bad is the internet really? I mean we cant see what
other people talk about only what they post. We dont know what people get in their
inbox from other people and dont know how theyll react to it. They could just keep it to
themselves or just ignore it, pretend nothing happen when their friends ask whats
wrong. Until it gets worse, itll get to them. One of the question is, can we do anything
about it?
In this article, it does make people believe things they read. It does go out really
fast, just in a blink of an eye. Once its up, its up. No point in removing it because its
already spread out to everyone else. Others already, might of post or share what you
have said. It creates an endless ripple. Kids are vulnerable to believe anything they
read. Cyber bullying is mean and threatening with cruelly harassing taunts towards a
person or persons. Cyber bullying can occur in posts, social networking sites, fake
profiles, emails and chat rooms. Cyber bullies can get misleading information into the
hands of thousands of people in a matter of minutes. Words to mislead people and
creates problem for everyone.

Vongsaath2

This usually happens in the early teenage years. Its where all the teenagers want
to be accepted by their peers and present themselves. When a cyber bully comes and
attacks a victim, the victim's friends are usually the first one to read it and fall for the
untruth that was told. Just like how this article said in a similar way.
When some cyber
bully comes along and spreads untruths about a teenager, their friends are the first ones
to jump upon the untruths and believe everything they read. This is when their friends
can shun the teenager. Their friends do tend to believe what the cyber bully says and
turn down their friend.
Anyone can be a cyberbully. Make up a profile, fake name, fake pictures, and
many more, just to create a fake person. Cyberbullying is crime when it goes too far.
Case after case of cyberbullying victims will die through committing suicide. Cyber
bullying has consequences of which there is no return. Death is one consequence. If the
victim is already in a bad situation with depression and the comments are getting worse
and worse, making them feeling even more bad about it. Theyll go into a severe
depression and the only thing they now think about is suicide. Theyll think that suicide
is the answer and that itll all stop. Cyberbullying is a crime when it takes a person's life.
When the victim is getting rude messages on mobile devices, facebook messages, verbal
assaults and threats that are physical harm, thatll be a crime as well. Plus thatll be a
criminal harassment and possibly violation of the civil rights that leads to that person's
death.
There is a debate whether or not cyberbullying should be a crime. A guy named
Fred posted that Yes it should be a criminal offense. Reasons why, youre going online

Vongsaath3

and attack someone with the intent to hurt. Everyone knows whats right and wrong, but
if you do it for fun just to see that person get hurt and be miserable, they should be
punished for that. An anonymous person had reply to what Fred had said. If bullying on
cyberspace is suppose to be punished then the other bullying's should be punished as
well, but our prison would be overcrowded and taxes wasted. That would be true but
how would we get justice? Another anonymous person had said that labeling and
defamation is a criminal conduct. If you posted it on the internet it stays there for a
long time no matter if you delete it or not. Other people already shared it and showed
others. There is evidence what you have done when bully someone online. If you dont
want to be punished then dont do it. Its that simple, why cause drama just for fun,
sadness, revenge or some other sort. Its not worth it. Some schools will have some sorts
of programs to help you get through it and how to deal with it. One step at a time, which
is worth it to go.
In this video Shane Koyczan story was about him. From his childhood to this day.
His mother had told him that if he wasnt careful, someday someones going to break
it. It is true parents tell their kids things like the talk, because they want their kids to
be careful with what they choose to do. Every parent wants to see their kids be happy
and not sad or hurt. We were told to stand up for ourselves. It is hard to do if you
havent found out who you are yet. Shane said we were expected to define yourselves at
an early age. Which is true, if you didnt others would do it for you. They would call you
names, names that werent true or how you wouldve called yourself as. They saw you
how they thought you were but not what everyone else sees you as. Those people will

Vongsaath4

call you out on media, mobile devices, face to face, just to put you down. Watching be in
pain everyday and every night. As you get depressed and thinking that you want to die.
You want to get away from all the harassments and threats. Which isnt right, thats a
crime. Where people are pushing you to think that way. The saying sticks and stones
can break my bones, but words cant break me. That isnt true to some people, words
stays with you and it hurts you, mentally and physically. Youre not the only who grew
up this way.
There are nearly forty-three percent who has been bullied online. One out of four
has been cyber bullied more than once. It was told that eighty percent of teens who uses
their phones regular do a medium cyber bully. Now, sixty-eight percent of the people
believe that it is a serious problem. Which is true cyber bullying is a problem, causes
drama, stress, overwhelmed, and death. Eighty-one percent of the people do think it is
an easier way to bully someone than having to do it in person. Which they think they
can get away with and that is not the case. You wouldnt be able to get away with
anything if at least one or more person knows what you are doing to others. You will pay
for what you did and get punished for it. Many, many people would stay out of the
problem because they dont want to cause anymore problems for the person and to
themselves. If you see something, say something. Dont ignore it. Someone is in trouble,
then help them. Dont let it go, youll regret it.
Boys tend to get threatened by cyber bullies than girls do. Girls are at least likely
as guys to be their victim or cyberbullied. Cyber bully happens to all race. The victims
are most likely to have low self esteem and will consider suicide. Most teens dont tell

Vongsaath5

their parents whats happening to them. They prefer to keep it to themselves, they might
think that their parents will be furious with them or act another way that the kid doesnt
want them to.
Florida's law says that cyber bullying is destructive and harmful. Cyber bullying is
against Florida's law. Bullying includes cyber bullying. Floridas Jeffrey Johnston Stand
Up for All Students Act, prohibits any bullying and harassments to or from any
students or employees K through twelfth grade. Any type of bullying, like cyber bullying
refers to systematic and chronic infliction of pain or psychological distress on one of
the person or more. It usually includes teasing, stalking, social exclusion, physical
violence, threats and intimidation, public or private humiliation, theft, sexual
harassments, religious harassments, or racial harassments and more. Since
cyberbullying is on the internet, relying on technology. Cyber bullying can be through
pictures, any transfers of rights, writings, signals, sounds, and more on the internet.
New Jerseys law are concern about cyber bullying that is used by and against
teenagers. It affects the state criminal statutes regarding the harassments and other
related crimes. The cyberbullying can be handled by the criminal court or in school or
both. New Jersey will charge cyberbullying under their cyber harassment law. There are
several defense for cyber bullying criminal charge including Free Speech, which is the
First Amendment, and when theyre really not threatening, when they have a reasonable
act. How is cyber bully punished in New Jersey? The person convicted with doing cyber
bullying will face fines or imprisonment or both. Cyber harassments in New Jersey is a
crime thats a fourth degree crime. Fines are up to $10,000 or 18 months in prison or

Vongsaath6

both. The crime may increase to a third degree, if the person is eighteen years and up for
pretending to be a minor just to cyberbully others. Penalties are fines that are $15,000
and up, three to five years in prison or both. A Civil Lawsuit may be used if the victim
wants to cover up the damages that has been done.
Massachusetts law is similar to New Jerseys law. The harassment fines, though
are $1,000 and up, two years and six months in jail or both, or up to ten years in the
state prison. Stalking fine is up to $1,000. Either two years and six months in jail or up
to five years in prison or both. Getting annoying telephone calls or technology
communications, fines are $500, up to three months in jail or you get both. Everything
else are the same as New Jerseys law for cyber bullying.
Each states have similar laws about cyber bullying, but they have different fines
and years in jail or prison. In the United States there are 34 states that are against cyber
bullying. The other 16 states hasnt made cyberbullying a law, yet. Now, there are 9
states that havent made it a law. Those states are Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, District of
Columbia, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, and Wisconsin. So if its such a
serious problem why arent all the states making it a law? Well, most of the states are
still pending and waiting for it to pass to make it an official.
Cyber bullying can be in two different categories, depending on the situation. It
can be a civil law or a criminal law. Civil law is the branch of law that would deal with
property rights, freedom from injury, and personal dignity. So under the civil laws, there
are three reasons for approaching cyberbullying. Defamation, slander and libel.
Defamation is where you ruin or damage someones good reputations. Slander is a crime

Vongsaath7

or action that was made to tell a lie about a persons reputation. A false statement that
would damage the person. Libel is similar to slander, but it is a written defamation. The
person that was accuse of libellous can defend themselves by saying that the statement
was true, it was a fair comment, meaning not a personal attack or a genuine criticism.
He or she can innocently reproduced the statement, without knowing whats
happening or what it is. It also creates an unsafe environment, making the victim feeling
like he or she cant go to school, or go out anywhere. Therefore, the school will have to
punish the person who had made it hard for that student to show up to school. A person
who is responsible for the consequences that he or she would reasonably knew what
would happened. The perpetrator who had suggest the victim who already has
depression should kill him or herself will be held liable for it, if the victim did kill him or
herself. Criminal law is another branch that will determine the crime actions, which are
against the state. Criminal law also have three approaches to cyberbullying. The three
approaches are harassing, defamatory libel and publishing intimate pictures without
consent. Harassment is a crime, which is under the Criminal Code. Its where a person
says or does something to another person, making them feel bad and concerning about
their safety. The perpetrator can still be charged with harassment for making the target
feel threatened, even if they didnt intend to frighten them. Defamatory libel is also
under the Criminal Code. Defamatory is at least five years in prison. This is if the
libellous facts or statements is against the person that can harm his or her reputation.
Without having consent to post pictures about the other person is a crime. This is where
he or she is nude, showing their genital areas, showing the breast or any sexual activity.

Vongsaath8

Without consent, being reckless or not, posting it up without them saying it was okay,
its a crime.
I do believe that cyberbullying is crime. It hurts other people when they get
bullied online constantly. It makes them feel unsafe going out anywhere, unsafe for their
environment, they just dont feel safe. The victim will be even more depressed, probably
even more insecure about themselves, always up in their room or just in the house not
going anywhere. It makes the parents worry a lot more about their child, knowing what
theyre going through or the child not telling them anything about whats happening to
them. Cyberbullying is traumatizing than a face to face bullying. Fake accounts
messaging the victim telling them fake things about them, threatening them, and many
more. Just to hurt the person, which isnt cool at all. This will make them feel hopeless,
and the only option they think is suicide. Theyll think that suicide is the only answer to
solving the problem, that itll all stop when they are gone. Well, thats not true, that
victim can find help, tell their parents, a trusted adult that can actually help them,
friends, go to counseling, therapy, something that can save them and help them get
through it. Ive had friends who went through the same thing, some went to go seek help
some didnt and thought that suicide was the answer. Cyberbullying isnt fun, it hurts. I
was too, been bullied on the internet. I ignored it, because I had my reasons to live and
not to let it get to me that much. I still went to go get help and how to deal with it.
Cyberbullying is a crime and if youre going through it, tell someone before it gets worse.
You wont regret if you seek help.
