I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Concept):
Students will be able to identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
Students will describe characters, settings, and major events in a story using key details.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
In the previous lesson, students retold stories using key details. In the next lesson, students will be able to
distinguish between the emotions that characters experience throughout a story.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities):
Today, I will read a new book, Oogna Boogna, by Frieda Wishinsky and illustrated by Carol
Thompson. But first I will like to go over the front of the book, the back of the book, and the spine.
Then I will go over the seven vocabulary words I found very interesting in the book. (List of seven
words: lullaby, wails, sobs, jig, unison, faded, and scampered. Vocabulary words are defined by the
teacher while the students repeat the new vocabulary word.)
Why do you think I choice these seven vocabulary words? (Students respond to the question in a
complete sentence.) As you hear the story, listen for the vocabulary words, listen for the names of
important people or things, and what happens in the story. Oogna Boogna by Frieda Wishinsky and
illustrated by Carol Thompson is read. Which vocabulary words did you hear? Who is baby
Louise? Who is Daniel? Who else is in the story? Why is baby Louise crying? Who makes baby
Louise stop crying? What else can you tell us about the story?
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):
C. Step #1 Naming characters from the story.
a. In pairs, students share the different characters in the story.
b. Teacher listens to responses as pairs of students share their information.

and the different things each character did to help baby Louise to stop crying.
b. Teacher walks around the class and observe the students.
Step #5 Summative Assessment
a. Students are to cut out pictures of the different scenes of the stories and glue them in order in
the Oogna Boogna worksheet.
b. Teacher walks around the class and assists students who need help.
